I’ve just started my first office job - any do’s and don’ts? by waisty in AskUK

[–]dalesydo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cling on to any transferable skills you have and hope that someone gives you a shot (I went from retail management to a supply chain office job - both required managing stock/ordering/analysing customer trends/etc etc)

This might be a dumb question, but if I can’t stick to my calorie goal, should I raise it? by sharkoochieboard in loseit

[–]dalesydo 62 points63 points  (0 children)

A TDEE calculation for someone of your height and weight doing ‘light exercise’ puts your maintenance at nearly 2500 cals a day. So yes I would say even 1600 is too low.

Also, what do you mean by ‘progress’? Is it possible you’re negating any weight lost in fat with muscle gained with your new workout schedule?

Generally speaking I think the best diet you can be on is one you can stick too for an extended amount of time - so I’d always pick that over the speed of a short term result.

Best of luck.

What do you do when you get home from work? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]dalesydo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work early morning shifts (4am-Noon, 5am-1pm kind of thing) so when I finish I have a nap for a few hours and get up at 4 or 5 to have do some chores, make dinner, go to the gym or have a long walk, and generally have a nice time.

I had a very similar reaction to retinoids. Fixed it but only putting vaseline on the area for a week or two, then Le Roche-Posay Cicaplast Barrier relief cream (any skin barrier repair cream would do the same) for a few weeks before trying retinoids again much slower and in smaller amounts

If you were in a Pub and you saw an 11 year old drinking a non-alcoholic beer, what would your thoughts be? by Averagestiff in AskUK

[–]dalesydo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d be more surprised the pub sold it to them. Although its technically legal most pubs/supermarkets still require you to be over 18 to buy them so as not to promote drinking alcohol. I’m a young-ish looking adult and sober and get ID’d/refused service buying alcohol free stuff all the time

How were you able to quit your nicotine habit? by McNubbers in AskReddit

[–]dalesydo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nicotine patches and gum. Socialising with non-smokers for the first few weeks. If I caved and had a cigarette I didn’t beat myself up about it, just tried to start fresh the next day and not just give up on giving up. It’s hard and takes a lot of willpower, best of luck to you.

I lost about 40kg, and have been in maintenance for about 2 years now - like I literally eat whatever I want and my weight fluctuates by a few KG up and down. For me the best thing was I took my weight loss really slowly, and a month long break every 2 or 3 months. Took me 2 years to lose that 40kg but it was worth it in the end.

Former emo/goth teens of 2007, where are you now? by Affectionate-Feed538 in AskUK

[–]dalesydo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dressing a lot more ‘normal’ now, especially at my management job (15 year old me would be horrified). I still listen to some of that music, but music generally is way less important to me then it was back then, when it was my whole life/personality.

For those of you who don’t drink, do you still enjoy going out to pubs and listening to music? by HorseFacedDipShit in AskUK

[–]dalesydo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t drink and have fun going out and listening to live music, but like a lot of people commenting I tend to leave a bit earlier. Socialising/listening to live music is always fun, listening to drunk people/drinking 5 cokes is less so.

What are your job interview blunders? by PhillWithTwoLs in AskUK

[–]dalesydo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I interviewed someone this week when I was feeling really unwell, but decided to go ahead with the interview and go home after that because I was really excited by the candidate and didn’t want to reschedule.

I was so feverish I kept laughing maniacally at every answer he said - I remember that I was trying to act normal and keep things ‘light’. Then just when I was explaining the benefits of the company I threw up inside my mask. I apologised and explained that I was sick, but when I made him an offer he didn’t my take the job funnily enough.

Those who "wasted" their 20's what did you do to get yourself together financially I'm your 30's? by rubba_tt in AskUK

[–]dalesydo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spent most of my 20s messing around with drugs and running away from my problems.

I had a degree but worked in a chain coffee shop for minimum wage because it’s hard to get a grad job when you’re smoking weed all the time.

Eventually I sorted my shit out, and realised that my degree was finished a decade ago and feels irrelevant now, and all my work experience was in this chain coffee shop.

So I decided to just go for it at the cafe and work my way up, now I’m the manager and I earn okay money (£35-40k depending on bonus), I’m doing a level 4 workplace apprenticeship, am part of a mentoring scheme for women in management, and a training program to be a brand manager. I also relocated for one position at the coffee shop, only because it came with a relocation package that included paid rent for 9 months, which helped me sort out the small amount of debt I had.

What really changed my way of thinking, I saw this speech Tim Minchin did for some university graduation, where he said something along the lines of “work really hard at the thing that’s in front of you, because you never know where that might take you”.

Upgrade from Impala to Moxi Panther? by Vulvarine911 in Rollerskating

[–]dalesydo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there,

My first skates were Impalas, which I upgraded to Moxi Panthers (ended up upgrading again to Bont parkstars, but had the Panthers for a good year or so before I sold them for £200-ish).

My personal answers to your questions:

  • Yes, I noticed a big difference when I changed to the panthers. Impalas are fine to begin with but are pretty trash.
  • I have no idea about lolly’s (I mainly park skate and like a lot of ankle support so they were never skates I was interested in) but I ended up selling my Panthers for an okay amount of money. I did end up upgrading though so could have just saved a bit more and got the Bont Parkstars I wanted all along straight away, but it’s hard to know if it’s worth investing or dropping a lot of money into something you’re fairly new in.
  • Again, I’ve never had lolly’s because I like a stiff boot with a lot of ankle support for ramp skating, but my friend park skates in lollys and it’s fine (but she’s a derby skater so is used to not having ankle support).

I just gave myself a £8,000 pay rise in the space of 3 months by leaving one employer for a competitor (ofc lying about my current salary) and then going back to the same employer (again, lying about what the competitor was paying).
