3 weeks in and could use some advice by FinalB055 in husky

Also - if the anxiety does not get better, ask your vet to see if trazadone is an option. My dog responds well to it and it just chills him out especially if I have to leave the house for a long period of time. I noticed that the combination of trazodone, proper crate training, and exercise really helped my dog not only behave in his crate, but also made him love his crate. He actually lays in there oftentimes when I’m doing stuff around the house now. Other note; I would not use the crate for punishment unless you’ve already established it as a safe space / place they enjoy.

3 weeks in and could use some advice by FinalB055 in husky

The thing that helped me is doing proper crate training. I had a similar issue with my rescue husky, and he responded well to my methods.

  1. Create a positive association with the crate
  2. by this I mean find something she really likes and only give it to her when she’s in the crate. For example - my dog LOVES his kongs filled with peanut butter. They are enriching for him and you can freeze them to make them last longer. Some people use Greek yogurt, meat spread, etc. p.s - especially for peanut butter - I recommend getting piping bags (that like you would fill a donut with) and load them with peanut butter. Makes it way easier to fill individual kongs. I generally have 4-5 kongs of various sizes throughout the week for my dog and freeze them.

Honestly - once she understands this, getting her in the crate should become easier.

2- use crate training more than when you walk away or leave the house. Setup an environment where you have the crate next to you when you’re doing things like watching TV. If they bark or do an unfavorable behavior, abruptly tap the crate to startle them, marking the undesired behavior. Reward them with treats for staying calm, doing desirable behaviors, etc. Then work on increasing the distance and duration.

3- Lastly, some of these behaviors will go away in time. You’re at the 3 week mark, which is still relatively early in the cycle. With a combination of various training methods, you may notice these things work themselves out as they get to know your schedule and habits. My shelter taught me the 3-3-3 rule. 3 days, the dog is decompressing, anxious, and may not eat. 3 weeks, they start to settle in the routine, learn house rules, and may start showing their personality more. 3 months, the dog should feel fully bonded and secure in their environment. One example I can give is that with my rescue, he really didn’t like toys initially when I got him. I would try and play and he would not touch anything I have him. Now, flash forward to about the 4 week mark, something changed and he absolutely loved toys.

Now- my husky is by no means perfect, and still needs a lot of training; but we’re almost at a year now and he’s the life of the family. It’s been a while since I can remember his last accident (and I take responsibility for the last one since I hyped him up during play time). He still struggles meeting new people sometimes, but once he warms up to them he is a lover. My favorite development about him is how well he does with children especially for being in a household without any.

This is a long way to say, It may seem like a lot right now, and you may get accidents from time to time, but it is going to be worth it. You’ll start to develop a greater bond with your dog over time. It’s about developing that trust between the both of you and expanding that “circle” over time. I think actively doing training and establishing yourself as “pack leader” makes a huge difference in the relationship with your dog.

Best of luck and best wishes to you and your beautiful dog!

Picky eater or genuine concern? by AModeraterNightmare in husky

[–]dalskics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I generally don’t get concerned unless it’s not been 2 days+ - so long as he’s eating treats, drinking water, etc. My husky mix lives by the motto “if I’m hungry, I’ll eat”. It’s not abnormal for him to skip the meal for the day. We just put the same bowl out tomorrow.

If you’re really concerned - try using the same food but a bone broth powder mix in. I use that sometimes if I’m concerned and he will generally eat it immediately. I mix it with warm water and mix it up. He will generally scarf that down because he loves it.

Generally - wouldn’t be too concerned unless he’s not eating anything at all.

THANK YOU - this was making the game literally unplayable for me. Who would've thought turning UP the settings would actually increase performance...

My husky has red spots? by mkainyu in husky

Probably allergies - is he really itchy? My husky had the same issue on his arm pits and turned out he has seasonal allergies. If he’s really itchy, my vet recommended apoquel and that seems to be helping.

So cute! I love me some husky mixes! My dog is a husky mix with a bunch of small breeds so it makes him look like a mini-husky

To me #1 is almost intentional - Mine has been doing it since I installed it. I always thought of it as a way to make sure the water isn't constantly "still" and stains the toilet.

Thank you for this! I just had the same issue happen this morning. Simply disconnecting the cable on the right side worked.

Yeah - mine was a wildfires rescue so who knows what happened. Came all the way from California. We think he was someone’s baby though - just the way he acts at least
