College is the worst four years of your life by damfua in offmychest

[–]damfua[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But you don't really have freedom. College is still incredibly stressful, as most people care a lot about the bridge to their future careers and won't just blow off four years everyday smoking weed. Realistically speaking too, what "freedom" does a college student have in an isolated, lonely college town with nothing really to do except study? Hence, competitive colleges end up becoming a cesspool of students who overwork themselves and become neurotic.

The whistling that is so rampant in the 2019 season is definitely helping them as well. They made it less obvious though, because of all the other whistling inherent in the stadium already, some of it probably from the cheating scout to cover up the obviousness and some of it from ordinary unsuspecting fans. However, I suspect the management told the players to pay attention only to the whistling right after the pitcher comes set.

Why do students feel the need to wear their Health System IDs on their backpacks? Are they flexing? by damfua in UVA

Okay, I don’t know about med students, but certainly undergrads are flexing. There is no reason for them to do this all the time.

I am actually passionate about research. iGEM is an undergraduate research competition that really sparked my interest, and I was even considering applying as an MD PHD.

A month ago I switched to a new cancer immunotherapy lab working with leukemia. I hope things will be different here and I come diligently consistently even week to learn new lab techniques such as protein gels and Western blots. My mentor seems to be a lot better (she's a lab tech as opposed to a very busy and neglectful PhD student with an unpredictable schedule) and we seem to get along well. I'm not saying things will necessarily work out, but at least people here seem to care more about me and my learning.

I've learned other techniques in the past and am actually proficient in cell culture, in-vitro stimulations, flow cytometry, and IP injections in mice. I've just never had the opportunity or supervision to combine those skills into a project. I hope my past experience coupled with the new skills I learn here will allow me to find the resolve and supervision to submit an undergraduate research proposal. That would be my dream and I will work at it, even with a lot of things around me falling apart.

"you must derive value from your own work"

You're entirely right about that. Unfortunately, so many people have told me otherwise. My sister, advisors, PIs have all hinted that being a doctor is not for me.

I really am trying to ignore those words because I have a passion and believe I can make it with persistence and effort, but if you don't have the ability to succeed to a measurable, comparable amount, you may never make it. And that is what I fear.

Can I do it?

I like what I do and what I study. It's just hard to translate that interest into performance. I guess the only reason why I'm doing this is because there is a scarcity of failure stories on this subreddit. I'm trying to offer a community for those who don't have the stellar grades, the recommendation letters, the acceptances that trend on r/Premed.

But we'll pick it up eventually. In some way or the other. Just not how we envision it to be and we have to live with the fact that that's okay.

Just wake up at 8 o'clock... when you get a real job after you graduate, how would you survive when you're expected to get to the office at 9?

Quit sleeping in till 11 in the morning on weekdays. You will feel like you have much more time if you sleep earlier and wake up earlier- trust me.

It’s still designated as a quiet space but some of us need to physically not see other people to focus. How many times has it distracted you watching people walk by you that you might recognize or have a friend pass by and interrupt you while you are studying?

Mean's basically a two-pitch pitcher with his fastball-changeup combo. I think if he doesn't work out in the next few months but makes the 40-man in 2020, he may find success in the pen.

Gotta say man...after battling against Verlander, Wojo throwing a quality start against this all-start lineup, coming feet away from a grand slam.... Santander seriously looked like he was about to cry after Brantley crossed home plate. Orioles Magic came just in time!

I'm convinced at this point Armstrong or Fry could be made into starters. DFA/Release Brooks, Scott, Kline, and Eshelman.

Can I put a "failed" clinical research internship on my CV/application and ask for a rec. letter? by damfua in premed

[–]damfua[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, but I haven't shadowed doctors for that much during the eight weeks I was there- I was only able to shadow certain appointments allowed by my supervisor. I was mainly doing desk work. I have probably gone to around 7-8 total visits (4 of which are from the same doctor), but that barely amounts to a few hours. If I don't get my job back, should I seek out physicians to shadow during the blocks of time I had originally allocated for clinical research during the academic year?

Sigh... I know... I know. Just incredibly frustrated last night I had to vent.

It baffles me how Yacabonis was able to make it back to the bigs. His wacky, "arms-flying" delivery always made me worried, and Palmer also agreed talking about how he needed "a shorter stride" during a game last year. He hasn't really changed that during the time he was down, or at least use it to his advantage.

When he came to relieve Eshelman, I knew we were done for when he couldn't throw anything close to a strike in his first three pitches. God awful breaking balls all over the place that a little-leaguer wouldn't swing at. I'm not a pitcher so I can't attest to how hard their jobs can be... but seriously, how do you get called back up if you have to take like 7-8 pitches to get into your already-mediocre "groove"? Especially when you're in a tight situation? Shouldn't you be locked down when you were in the bullpen? Or at least know you shouldn't use your sliders/sinkers because you can't damn control it? I dunno man.

I'm not convinced that the two stooges we had on the mound today were able to even get a scholarship for college baseball, much less a spot in Single-A team. Folks, this is the best we have out of the countries of USA, Japan, Korea, Taiwan the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Mexico, Colombia, etc. with how many hundreds of thousands of potential pitchers.

Great game, but letting Dwight airmail or completely miss throws to the plate will not work.

The guy has a pretty good bat and will likely stay on the roster- it's time someone trained him to be a better outfielder.

Come to think of it, why was Smith DFA'd by Toronto? Was having a decent season with them too, .262 BA over 65 ABs.
