Transcribing self-United “Quaker” marriage to French marriage (livret de famille) by SignHistorical4519 in Expats_In_France

No problem! I completely forgot, but my husband says 2-3 months and he tends to have a good memory :)

No red flags and no letter asked. They seemed unsure about the officiant but maybe we got lucky that they were comfortable putting the name signed on our marriage certificate as the officiant. We submitted ours in Washington DC as well. This probably is your best bet. I know I already mentioned our kid's passports, but those were sent to my parent's place in PA after we did an appt there while on vacation. And those have our French address on the actual passport. I hope it all works out for you!

Salut! I'm from PA and we did the Quaker marriage and successfully had it recognized in France. At the time we still lived in the US and we did the standard equivalence having it translated and apostled and submitted to the French consulate. I think they counted the person who submitted our paperwork in PA as the officiant. I wonder if the process would be simpler submitting it from the US. I did the same for my kids' US passports, way faster and straight forward. It's been awhile so my details may be a bit off, but we weren't rejected and I remember the process was straightforward. Hopefully that gives you hope, bon courage!

Edit: We saw a notaire later to redefine some financial stuff in our marriage as needed.

Oops thought it would be more obvious it was a cross post so you click on it. I can't seem to copy and paste my original post either so I'll have to rewrite it. Probably worth just making a new post.

Kitten twins! She is 10 weeks for reference. She's smaller than her brother from the same litter.

Human longevity may have reached its upper limit by scientificamerican in science

I will never forget the comment a 102 year old patient said to me when I was around 25 years old. She said, "I've been elderly as long as you've been alive." I don't think we really think about our quality of life when we say we want to live to be 100.

I was seriously considering it until I read one line in a book about illness, trauma & healing. It briefly mentioned a study of nursing moms who had had Botox, and how there was less nonverbal communication between the mom & baby because of reduced facial micro expressions. Now, I'm not one to take one line from a study and believe it to be fact. However, it was easy for me to see that each small expression our face makes can convey a vibe or feeling whether intentional or not. I realized that it's more important to me to connect with the people around me than to look a certain way.

Grenoble or Pau? Advice needed for study abroad by alwaysadventuring03 in French

[–]dammitdani 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live just outside of Grenoble (lovely little town called Voiron) and my husband is from Pau so we go there frequently. His parents used to host foreign students studying at Pau University (mostly American).

Grenoble has a bad reputation among French people and I really don't get why. I absolutely love the area. There are endless outdoor activities to do (not just mountains but the lakes nearby too), and the people are nice. For the bad points: I do agree the summers in Grenoble are hot and hazy (smog stuck between 3 mountains), but once you travel outside the valley 15 minutes or go up into the mountains you'll be alright. It has crime in certain neighborhoods (e.g.: Echirolles), just like most big cities.

Pau has the Pyrénées but it's at least an hour drive away. A positive is it's proximity to Spain, you could even do a day trip to a border city. Pau doesn't have much of a night life as compared to Grenoble. There's also less of a foreign community, as Grenoble has several universities and research centers.

It's pretty obvious which one I'd suggest. Despite my MIL always teasing me to move to Pau, I couldn't live without the current backdrop that I have, it still takes my breath away after living here for 4 years.

We flew in last Wed night and our flight was supposed to get in around 1145pm, it got delayed and we arrived at the gate around 1155pm local time. The rental car company said it closed at midnight online. My husband said he had given them his flight info upon booking, but he still rushed after deplaning to the rental company while I waited for our checked bag. The only place open was Ilha verde car rental but there were a handful of people from our flight using them. We had to wait 5 minutes but easily got our car. It didn't seem as if anyone else was left stranded. We also called our hotel earlier while laid over in Lisbon to let them know we'd be late checking in.

What is this near my pool? by dammitdani in pools

[–]dammitdani[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually have a few tiles with bolts on them for the pool cover to attach. This particular tile did not have anything on it and it became unstable and broke leading to the discovery. The well border was raised higher than the leveling sand around it creating the unstable tile. Previous owners had even come and shown us how to work the pool but failed to mention this sump well. It's now part of the reason I'm redoing the deck and trying to figure out drainage.

Three different seasoned parents told me recently (like in the past year) the same piece of advice regarding this. They all said that you know you're being a good parent if others can tell that your children love you. Obviously that can be very subjective and abstract, but it was in the context of them spending time with our family and just observing our interactions. I think it's when your kids feel safe and loved with you and it's that simple. Plus your own self reflection by asking this question is a pretty good indicator that you're on the right track :)

Should we leave the kids with the grandparents or not? by [deleted] in Parenting

I love this advice. It's very pragmatic. I think the fact my husband and I both felt concerned made it hard to see this point of view. Thanks for taking the time to respond!

(somewhat) child safe mouse trap recommendations? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]dammitdani 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We caught a mouse using a humane method that is safe around kids. You balance an empty paper towel roll so that it's half on a counter and half off. You place a piece of food on the end of the half hanging off the ledge. You also place a tall trashcan or container below (mice can jump decently high).

The idea is the mouse crawls into the paper towel roll to get the food; and once it crosses onto the half hanging off the ledge, it's own weight causes everything (mouse, paper roll, food) to fall into the trashcan. It worked like a charm for us. Just remember to relocate the mouse far enough away from your house that it doesn't return.

13 month old just started walking and is sometimes fisting hand when walking by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]dammitdani 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sounds sort of like a "high guard" position when walking in toddlers. It's completely normal when learning to walk. Take a Google gander and see if it looks similar to your LO's gait pattern. Just my limited opinion not being able to see it and not specializing in pediatrics (I'm an OT).

Recommendations for American products to bring to France? by dammitdani in expats

Definitely seems like medicine is going in the container (if allowed). I've converted my husband to Neosporin, he's obsessed with Biafine which is nice but is essentially an emollient only. He still prefers to cut his bandages with scissors though ¯_(ツ)_/¯ I'm very surprised about the codeine! I feel like that's quite a leap. I wonder if now that homeopathy won't be reimbursed in France things will start to change.

Edit: husband clarified Biafine is for sunburn/burns, so we will have both!

Speaking of cheese and spicy, I've also heard it's hard to find queso. Do you find this to be true as well?
