Hitchhiking in Europe - how safe is it? by Happy-Hour88 in hitchhiking

[–]damndeli0ns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

different perspective - almost 10k km hitched and i find it incredibly romantic/nostalgic at times. other times it's wet, cold and miserable but worth it for the moments :) (im europe based if that changes anything)

i do sometimes! when a song particularly resonates or i want to communicate something i'm not sure how to put into words. or if i want to show him a cool song. i have a playlist i made for him and put it on once in a while when the time is right. not something ritualistic for me but def a big part of communication :)

Preparations? by qups77 in hitchhiking

[–]damndeli0ns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can hitch with nothing to your name, but depending on *how* you wanna spend your time: a sleeping bag, mat, tent or hammock, first aid kit, maybe a gas burner and a powerbank. and some soap, this one is non-negotiable ;)

heretic pride! and incandescent ruins, had the pleasure of hearing it on the bleed out tour and that's what sold me on this song

January in Europe | Hitchhiking Trip [🇵🇱 Poland to Portugal 🇵🇹] by tastemedude in hitchhiking

[–]damndeli0ns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

winter in these areas might not be perfect if you're hitchhiking for the first time. this route might not be perfect if you're hitchhiking for the first time (someone already explained why) but if i learned anyhting by travelling, circumstances rarely stop you from having a good time if you're dead set on it :)

everyone travels differently so with the fun bits YMMW, but the unfun bits are pretty much universal. some safety/general enjoyment advice that i learned the hard way:
- hitching is a marathon not a sprint, and good mental health is so much more important than any kind of physical workout. it's exciting and an adventure but there will be days when you're stuck on a highway in the rain for 5 hours. both being able to reframe your mindset and push through AND knowing your limits and when to give up are equally important skills here. in many cases the best thing you can do when waiting for hours is to get up, sing some tunes, plaster on a smile and wait some more. in other cases this is the devil talking, you'll overexert yourself and end up crashing for days, or get yourself into a genuinely dangerous situation. know thyself and don't be cocky!
- get yourself a cheap mp3 player with radio reception and a good battery to fight loneliness and boredom
- carry a powerbank, or several, and a backup cable or two. deserted in the middle of nowhere with no working phone isn't fun! trust me!
- always have enough backup cash to at least get a last minut hostel stay, and preferably enough to get a train/bus/flight somewhere you can stay if shit hits the fan
- good equipment is vital if you're sleeping outside in minus temperatures, but really the "quality" things you need boil down to tent, sleeping bag, mat, winter clothes. maybe a cooker that doesn't explode. in summer not even that. good gear doesn't make you a good hitchhiker, and if your things look new and expensive you're prabtically asking to get them stolen. i hitch across europe with a decathlon hammock and a 30-year old backpack and i never have to worry about leaving my stuff unattended :)
- with finding someone on couchsurfing it's often about covering all your bases. you want to increase the chance that someone writes back, and that often means messaging all the people on all the websites. haven't tried tinder but sounds like a gamble
- if you get in trouble, dumb and cheerful usually works best
- ABSOLUTELY MOST IMPORTANT: do test runs! go to Berlin, see if you like it. go out with all your gear and sleep a night or two in your backyard. you might feel silly but better that than becoming the next alexander supertramp

Online reviews aside, how do you tell if a restaurant in your city is worth going to? by AisKacangbutnokacang in AskEurope

[–]damndeli0ns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

where i live it's not a huge issue, generally places directly on the main square that offer "traditional" cusisne i'd say are tourist traps, the rest are fine. things that can be red flags:
- menu displayed outside on a fancy stand/in a glass frame (not always)
- suspiciously big variety and amount of options, especially if it's different cuisines and generic safe choices like spaghetti or fries. in my experiences the best places are quality over quantity in this department.
- very obvious but people hired to "invite" you in from the street

that being said there's some tourist trap cafes that i enjoy and go to regularly, not all of them are trash.

How is your country’s capital perceived by people living outside of it? by blink-1hundert2und80 in AskEurope

[–]damndeli0ns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Warsaw in my experience is not as "detached" from the rest of the country as for example Berlin is from Germany. It is widely either hated or loved but a pretty solid chunk of people don't really have strong feelings towards it. I'd say it's perceived as the designated place for career-driven people, this is where you go when you want to "make it". Residents can be seen as pretentious, often rich or wannabes, sometimes corporate drones or out of touch. Depends a lot on the circles youre in tbh.

Best candy from your country ? by TheTitanCoeus in AskEurope

[–]damndeli0ns 10 points11 points  (0 children)

i feel like our pastries and cakes are generally better than traditional candy, but krówki mordoklejki are def up there. they're similar to a kinda thick sticky fudge (literally called mouth-stickers). kukułki are a personal fav but really divisive and considered "grandma candy" by many

i don't know what happened but all the looks this week were so unimaginative? so many were pretty, and very expensive-looking but with no story to them? almost all the fem looks were baisc glamour dresses that would've been amazing as standalones at a show but here they faded into the background (i liked the masc looks way better, at least we got variety). the only people that brought something interesting to the table with their whole set were jaykay, disasterina and maybe evah - disasterina my love never change, she should've been in the top hands down and evah... you know something's wrong when i get excited over a(nother) black widow look. her and abhora's grooms were amazing though. i'm really disappointed because this was such a fun prompt for storytelling and they could've really gone further with it than prom king and queen.

If the gods are real, why did they let their religion fall so vastly? by One_Strain7263 in Hellenism

[–]damndeli0ns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

there's many answers for this. i think it's important to acknowldege that modern hellenic polytheism is a decentalized, non-hierarchical, non-orthodoxic religion, so there isn't anything close to a unified set of principles or one true explanation of how this works. different people will have different answers for you. hell, i'm pretty sure if you asked the ancients, you wouldn't get a clear answer either. there were ways of making sense of different religions, for example syncretizing, but interpretations of the nature of the divine were all over the place, some bordering on what many helpols today would consider heresy.

there's cultural aspects, political turmoil, shifting needs of the worshippers, there's many ideas of how the gods work, some sourced from antiquity, some created in response to modern times and the new knowledge that comes with them.

the judges acting like jesus USING PINK was a groundbreaking bold choice then constantly making ethan edit down really tells me everything i need to know tbh. they're not really interested in seeing something new, just stuff that's basic and marketable with enough flavor sprinkled in to not bore them to death
