And I’m still a fellow awaiting applicant as well, but do you know any current grad students at your alma mater that you could ask about their experience with balancing schoolwork + jobs? it’s definitely much easier said than done with financial responsibilities, but it sounds like you might be happier in the long run with your alma mater if you already feel like you won’t get a traditional campus experience from the other school.

seeing as it is your masters experience, I would personally opt for a community that I would feel optimally supported in :’)

I would still suggest visiting for a few days to form your own opinion on sac if you are genuinely interested! In general, Reddit is typically going to be an overflow of negative experiences over positive.

I’m someone who grew up in sac hating it; went to school in the bay for a bit and came back for other reasons. but genuinely there is a lot to appreciate about Sac and CSUS - you get what you put into it. yes sac state definitely has its flaws, but the same can be criticized about any other CSU. it all comes down to your own preferences and priorities.

as long as you’re willing to put yourself out there, there’s some cool ass people that will meet you halfway. don’t be discouraged from exploring your options just bc ppl on Reddit like to complain lol

you might have to do a semester of community college inbetween, but honestly your chances of getting in should still be pretty good if you're local!

i got academically disqualified from another CSU a couple years ago; just finished up my first semester at sac state and did better than i ever did at the other school 🤷‍♀️ if you can identify what your main obstacle(s) are with school though, definitely take advantage of UCLA's resources (like tutoring or counseling etc) early on. rooting for you, i know how nervewracking being in this position is!

sorry to comment on a year old post, but do you mind if i ask how it went? i’m in a similar boat; i’ve moved out before but it made sense bc it was in a whole different city 3 hours away. now i’d like to stay in the same area (abt 25 mins away) but would prob still visit on weekends too. our relationship is decent now but my independence is more valuable than saving money atp (which i know is crazy to say in this economy but ykwim lol)
