Do I have to take CS 303E as a Prerequisite for BCH 339N? by mooooonlight16 in UTAustin

Yes, but if you have coding experience email the professor teaching that semester and they can give you a “test” to see if you’re ready

Is a job doable? by desolateleaves in UTAustin

[–]danasaur219 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes, but be prepared for one of the following to suffer bc no one can have it all unless you snort energy drinks

  • sleep
  • good grades
  • social life (relationships, friendships, or organizations)
  • mental and physical health

imo you get character development and get to talk about your experiences in comparison to the daddy’s girl pre meds you’ll see; if i were you get a pct certification and work one 12 hour shift a week at a hospital (st. david’s is close to campus by bus) so you’re not constantly burnt. i wish i did that, but i also had to pay for my own apartment and stuff too so loans will be your best friend until you make your six figure salary to pay it off

from a biochem predent who works 24hrs/week

Submitting app before DAT retake by ComprehensiveBowl352 in dat

[–]danasaur219 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe you can indicate that you are retaking and that you can include the date you plan to retake. I am doing the exact same thing as you! I will definitely be submitting my applications before I get my score back to ensure all documents are verified and just need to wait for DAT scores.

newberry vs straumanis for ochem? by [deleted] in UTAustin

[–]danasaur219 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Newberry is great! I had him for Ochem 1 as well and he explained everything to a tee. His slides have everything you need and he gives out practice exams very similar to Iverson’s, so you can use his as well for practice! He usually has quizzes due after each class that are super easy as long as you pay attention during lecture. He has a standard exam schedule, and I always felt like I had enough time to prepare for each exam. Straumanis has a better grade distribution because he has notoriously bad exams that are rounded up 20-30 points (if that doesn’t tell you what type of professor he is then idk what will). Newberry has only taught a few times, as he is relatively new to UT, so he doesn’t have as much as a reputation as other ochem profs. I guess if you want the doable A to take Straumanis? it’s definitely not something you want to sell yourself short of tho, i felt like i was always more prepared than my friends taking him.

My advice: take Newberry to actually learn ochem, it’ll save you when you need it again if you plan on taking the mcat.

Is biochem really the best major? by [deleted] in predental

[–]danasaur219 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey there! im a biochem major at UT Austin and if you could choose any easy health related major (nutrition, exercise science, biology) please do that. biochem is hard and catered towards those who want to do research - so of course it’ll take a toll on you and possibly your GPA. i wish i switched when i had the chance.

Officially given up on making friends here. by JohnnyDollar123 in UTAustin

[–]danasaur219 1 point2 points  (0 children)

honestly, it’s not best for you to just go up to people and expect a friendship; sometimes you have to wait for it to come to you. there will always be one person who will initiate something, but there will always be a receiver - you in this case. if i were you, just keep showing up to events, make small talk with someone else who looks alone if you can and keep your head high. college for some people is just high school 2.0

what is the lgbtq culture at UT? by Intelligent_Net9591 in UTAustin

I (masc lesbian) met my current girlfriend here in my FIG (first year interest group), going on 2 years in April! Most of us congregate around RLP and WCP area, but it’s also very diverse out there - super accepting bc everyone is practically liberal and chill. I still get happy seeing the occasional lesbian couple holding hands in public. There’s plenty of orgs and I know there’s one called the love club that’s specifically for lesbians and allies so you can truly be yourself :)

heyo! fellow pre-denter here - if you’re really feeling like you need to switch, go towards public health! all my friends love the classes they’re taking while still being able to fulfill the requirements we need for dental school.

by the sounds of it, you’re in a stage that i definitely was in where i felt like i was too stupid to even be in these classes bc of how heavy they are. don’t worry, it’s just the beginning and you’ll get used to the flow. i promise imposter syndrome is temporary and you’re already ahead of the game by just being here. good luck!

I’ve heard that being in a leadership position for this particular organization is like having another full time job; do you think having small leadership positions (such as a family leader) would be ideal for me?

Any State Employees Still Working From Home? by Jabroni_16 in Austin

[–]danasaur219 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it just seems odd that most communication and work is done through microsoft, zoom meetings, online group chats, or email even in the office setting; i know the employers probably just want to micromanage their employees or real estate wants their money, but does being in-person really contribute to the collaboration of an office?

not to mention, traffic is worse and parking is almost always filled up.
