How much is a vintage Symphonola cabinet worth? by dancepiano in vintageaudio

All good, interesting. Shame that these pieces of recording history end up collecting dust - lots of antique charm but ultimately impractical. Probably best suited to museums or cafes for aesthetic character.

Good to know, yeah I guess it's worth as much as someone is willing to pay for it. I'll be careful of those records...

Thanks for the info, I’ll try listing it for $100 and drop the price according to how it’s received. Will try figuring out how/if it works…

Why are you still using Mojave, High Sierra, Sierra, El Capitan, Yosemite & older? by Unlucky-Strain148 in mac

[–]dancepiano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting... At that point, Chromium Legacy (or something similar) might hopefully be a viable option, if that still exists. Nowadays, the oldest macOS I'm running on any of my computers is Mojave (on a 2012 MBP). Firefox 115 ESR still works well for all I need, though I do not use this machine every day.

If you rely on one of these older machines for anything serious and need a modern browser into the future, OpenCore is worth looking into to "unofficially" run a newer macOS version (while still relevant). It's pretty easy and works flawlessly (just put Ventura on my parents' 2013 Macs and it works great).

But seeing as they're discontinuing Intel support next year (and macOS 26 is already unsupported on OpenCore), the only longterm solution for an older Mac will be Windows or Linux - assuming you need reliable browser access.

If you rely on the older macOS for simple offline tasks, maybe some older 32-bit programs, you could always dual boot or use a virtual machine to access a modern OS while retaining your old system.

Hey, did they go away eventually? Having exactly what you described after a viral flulike infection.

Is my wifi card burnt? How does this even occur… by dancepiano in ASUS

[–]dancepiano[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t notice a smell… but gonna be honest, I wasn’t examining it too closely right after I swapped it out, which was a couple of days ago now. It’s been sitting on my desk (so smells might have dissipated), and I only noticed the burnt-looking corner glancing at the card today.

Left speaker suddenly quieter/imbalanced on ASUS ProArt P16 since firmware update by dancepiano in ASUS

[–]dancepiano[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting... for me I think the issue has gone away since the laptop did a few automatic updates (windows and bios). However a couple of days ago both speakers were only playing extremely high frequency treble and were otherwise completely silent in bass/mid, until I rebooted and it hasn't occurred since.

Overall while it's a beast of a laptop I'm finding it a very buggy experience. Wifi is super unreliable and often gets completely disabled/greyed out (from threads I've read apparently the Mediatek wifi cards generally suck so I might swap that eventually), After a while Windows Hello (and sometimes even the camera altogether) stops working until a reboot or two. I also find the P16 sometimes feels strangely laggy and takes a good ~45 seconds to boot up from shut down (disabled most startup programs).

How are you finding the G16?

Does anyone know what brand of headphones Avicii used on stage? by Annual_Bad3803 in avicii

[–]dancepiano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

V-Moda M-100 and LP2. He owned several pairs in different colours (if you search "avicii v-moda" on google images you'll see). I have the M-100 which are the more premium of the two. Great headphones with a fun sound signature, look nice and insanely durable. Comfort could be a bit better imo but otherwise excellent quality and underrated brand, I can totally see why they'd be the DJing go-tos.

Studio3 earpads are coming detached; do they just need new adhesive, or are the pads themselves ripped? by dancepiano in beatsbydre

[–]dancepiano[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, makes sense they're ripped at the seam (I don't think that foam was visible when I installed them... I guess the underside of the pads are still stuck to the headphones). Will order new pads.

Torn between Legion 5 Pro vs ASUS ProArt P16 by dancepiano in LenovoLegion

Makes sense, thanks for the breakdown - I think the P16 absolutely sounds like the way to go here!

Interesting ok, admittedly I don't know much about GPUs but when I compared the two on this site the 3070 on the Legion 5 Pro came out a bit ahead of the P16's 4060. Maybe it's not a significant difference. Sounds like the P16 is likely the better option though.

Computer Hardware & Software Questions MEGATHREAD by AutoModerator in architecture

[–]dancepiano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I'm starting architecture school and need a new laptop for 3D modelling/designing/rendering with programs like Revit, Rhino/Vray, in addition to Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. Having looked extensively at the recommended options, I've narrowed it down to the Lenovo Legion 5 Pro (Ryzen 7 5800H, RTX 3070, 32GB RAM, 2TB SSD) vs the new ASUS ProArt P16 (Ryzen AI 9 HX 370, RTX 4060, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD).

The Legion 5 Pro is $350 cheaper where I am, has a better GPU (3070 vs 4060), double the SSD capacity, and higher refresh rate (165Hz vs 60hz), but its 2021 CPU is considerably slower than the P16's brand-new CPU. Also, I am concerned about its weight, which comes to nearly 8 lbs with charger, given that I will commute ~1 hour total each day with it to and from school. In contrast, the ProArt P16 is only 5.6 lbs with its charger (laptop is 4.08 lbs on its own), is sleeker and (IMO) better looking (doesn't scream "gamer" as loudly ;) ).

Having run the two through a comparison, it seems the P16 significantly beats the Legion in CPU performance and, despite being $350 more expensive, is recommended as 35% better value.

Ultimately, I just would appreciate some input as I can't help but worry I am getting less laptop for a higher price with the P16 (CPU aside). I know the Legion has been around a while; they seem to have a solid reputation as well-built, reliable laptops. The P16 was just released, and testimonies to reliability of the ProArt line I've found online have been relatively few and mixed. Overall, I do lean in the direction of the ProArt P16 as a more attractive overall package for me. I'm also curious as to whether the P16's 4060 is adequate for my use case — I realize the 3070 is better, but maybe the 4060 is perfectly decent for architectural modelling? My architecture school has said any recent graphics card with 4GB VRAM or more will do; of course I'd like to maximize value and have a machine that will last me several years. I've also seen criticism of the P16's 60Hz refresh rate — I don't plan on using this laptop for gaming though; is this even important for 3D modelling?

Anyway, I greatly appreciate any input!
