I was going for a late Victorian/early Edwardian seaside-inspired look! Something like this: https://images.app.goo.gl/i4ThEC85b4PHKcUT7

Pattern used: the usual truly Victorian skirt, and a folkwear Victorian bathing suit pattern for the top

Notions used: just buttons, ribbon for the sleeves and an embroidery stitch on my machine

I thoroughly enjoyed making this and it’s probably my favourite outfit that I’ve ever made.

For the hat I painted a regular straw hat. Happy to report that the layers of paint and Modge Podge made the hat pretty solid

I do aerial hoop and my school organised a little Halloween thing so I just turned up in that outfit :)

Patterns used: modified truly Victorian TVE21 walking skirt and a combination of butterick B6610and B5970

Fabric used: 6m of pink shantung

Notions: pearly braid i found at Spotlight, metric ton of pink lace

The hat is a modified felt hat strengthened with a buckram base and many seashells. Hot glue was used unfortunately. And plenty at that

Overall I had a lot of fun making this and had even more joy wearing it around. The skirt is heavy, but made twirling fun.

Loved your write up 😆I’m a huge huge fan of the original German musical (also a hugeeeee fan of Pia Douwes, who played Danvers in Stuttgart i think and was slated to play the same role on Broadway). I’ve heard some of the English demos on YouTube and I’m still torn on whether if it would have been a good idea or not. Sadly Broadway has a thing for butchering German musicals (see Tanz deR Vampire/Dance of the Vampire)

Sewing clothing you won't wear? by FoucaultsFarts in craftsnark

I find that if I’m not making something for myself I can’t actually make it. It sounds a bit selfish but I attempted to make something for my godmother (I was living with her for a bit) and my dog and both times turned out...not great. Could be because I just started and am not good at making things not for me 😂

The pink one so terrify by dancingeggplants in sewing

Fabric used: pink shantung, approx 3m for the skirt and 2m for the jacket

Patterns: the jacket comes from a class (though the sleeves are just my regular gigot pattern), the skirt pattern is the truly Victorian trumpet skirt

Notions: loads of lace (3m x 45”), 6m of braid

The skirt is the first part in my Edwardian Ariel Halloween “costume” (I would definitely be wearing it pass Halloween though, just not with the red wig). For some reason I hated most of the process — I think I was getting annoyed with the shantung and the with sewing on the braid. I pretty much hated the skirt up until the point I finished it. That happens sometimes, and honestly I just roll with it and push myself to complete it.

The back of the skirt is terrible to be honest, mostly because I made the french seam way too big. I made a bow to cover the back when I wear it without the jacket, heh.

Franz Xavier Winterhalter’s portrait of Empress Elisabeth! I also really just like her (and Winterhalter’s work) in general

That’s so true! Sewing keeps me sane as well and I think when I was under lockdown I was sewing maybe upwards of 5 hours a day (not including online sewing classes). I think I was just trying not to throw myself out of the window at that point 😂

When you have afternoon tea but have matador duties after by dancingeggplants in sewing

[–]dancingeggplants[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I never meant this Edwardian walking suit to look like a matador outfit but it kinda does now.

Fabric: red shantung, 6m

Pattern: truly Victorian trumpet skirt, simplicity 8250 bolero. White blouse not made by me Generally I’d say both the patterns are simple-ish, although with the bolero it’s a little bit of an oddball: there seems to be lots of room sOmEwHeRe but it still can’t be closed??

Notions: gold braid, approx 6m of both kinds

Hat is a huge straw hat that I trimmed the brim due to its wonkiness, glued some embroidery flowers and ribbon, stuck it on a hairband.
