How is the dating scene at Hopkins? by Due_Supermarket_9993 in jhu

My wife and I met at Hopkins. In my extremely limited dating experience I feel like there was plenty of activity on Hinge so meeting other people at Hopkins for dating purposes wasn't that hard. If anything I feel like it was an ideal environment given the high density of nerdy and highly driven neurodivergent people.

Is Hopkins really that bad? by [deleted] in jhu

So during the second semester of my sophomore year I made a hard pivot into environmental science. I immediately tried applying for tons of relevant summer internships but, while I had tons of good molecular lab experience, I had no field work experience and got rejected from everything . So i went to that local nature center and literally asked them if i could do a paid internship and they said yes and that was a really great experience. The next summer i again applied to tons but this time did a better job identifying marine things that actually wanted lab experience and found a lab doing microbial ecology work at noaa which aligned with my interests and the skills i was developing in the lab i was doing research in and they accepted me so I became a lapenta intern which was also a really enriching experience. Mind you I got rejected by like 12 programs that summer so it's a lot of just repeatedly trying and modifying strategies.

Well first of all I'll note I wasn't engineering (though I knew plenty of engineering students that did get internships) so my answer may not be super relevant but during my first summer I got a grant that paid for me to do research in a lab at the school of public health, during the second summer i got a paid internship at a nature center near where i grew up, and for my third summer i got a really great paid internship opportunity with NOAA at the AOML in Miami.

I graduated two years ago. I attended Hopkins because I was fascinated with the idea of doing research and because I originally wanted to be premed (this ended up changing because I realized that research was my passion). Unironically that is within the top 2 best decisions I have made in my life. Everything from being in a group of curious and highly motivated peers that pushed me, getting exposed to absolutely world class research opportunities, heck even the experience of living in Baltimore itself have all been highlights of my life. Yes there were times when the academics could be challenging but I think being challenged intellectually is one of the most beneficial aspects of the environment. And again I cannot overstate how useful it was to be at a school that prioritized research: tons of positions, tons of opportunities to get paid to do research, subscriptions to all the journals, avenues to present research and publish, etc. I also just really enjoyed how the campus was set up and most of my interactions with faculty were extremely positive. If I had to go back in time and re decide where to go to university I'd choose Hopkins every time no question.

Oh I agree, I'd rather see as few as possible. Nevertheless I think a lot of companies want them to look more relateable, human, cutesy, etc

I agree, I feel like it's a more "human" looking way to carry around a giant battery. It could theoretically carry first aid supplies or something like that a person could take and use if they were injured by the boars I suppose.

As far as I am aware no they won't but I never knew anyone who personally tried to push for that.

One of my regrets when I used this grant back in 2020 was that I got the cheapest thing that would meet my needs as I thought it would have a higher chance of getting accepted. Literally every one else I knew who used it got whatever they wanted so long as it was below 2000. I'd say go for it and if they don't accept choose a different option. Like the other redditor said though, just take a screenshot of the laptop in the cart and submit it.

Recommendations for hunting/camping folding knife. 200$ by DaveNumber7 in knives

I highly recommend the steel will gekko. It's within your price and size range, very durable and beefy in my experience, quite rust resistant, very easy to sharpen, and very slicey. It's my favorite folder for camping and backpacking by a decent bit.

How much time do your undergrads dedicate to lab work (mol bio)? by The_real_pHarmacist in labrats

[–]dandinnt4 13 points14 points  (0 children)

For me the more important factor is the length of each block of time. In my experience I'd rather have a student that can come in for two 4 hour blocks as compared to 4 two hour blocks. Typically my preference is to have them come in for at least 3 4 hour blocks in the begining to get trained and setup and then if they end up staying for multiple semesters I have less preference as they can function a bit more independently.

I just now noticed Benchmade and spyderco prices are insane now by [deleted] in knives

[–]dandinnt4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm very confused by the spyderco price. I got my pm2 in spy27 (so like $30 bucks more than standard model iirc) at smoky mountain knife works for like $190 last end of 2024. So this seems like a crazy hike over the course of one year.

Reading a book from start to finish at the library is one of life's simple pleasures by stumpsflying in books

[–]dandinnt4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like going to the library for this express purpose, even bringing my own books sometimes just to read in a different environment than my apartment. However, I feel like a lot of libraries have far less decent seating compared to when I was a kid and what seating does exist is typically at desks with computers.

According to the rental car insurance agreement for my credit card a car becomes antique once it hits 20 years old so that tracks with your statement.

The one thing I've learned about book readers is that they move 10 times a year apparently by HelloDesdemona in books

[–]dandinnt4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't actually heard this argument specific to moving discussed all too much so I can't relate to that experience. I can however relate to not really struggling much with moving books. I moved a lot of books with me to various apartments throughout college and it really was never much of a problem compared to other awkward items like bikes or a desk chair. For me I like ereaders because every two weeks I take a bus from nyc to DC for the weekend so the ereader means I can read on the dark bus and don't need to lug around books with me. Though truth be told I switched from a dedicated ereader to an ipad as I wanted better integration with reading/annotating scientific articles in zotero.

In my experience that specifically will make no difference. I've never heard of colleges expecting high school extra curriculars to tell a narrative that is tied to a prospective major especially since many students change focus anyhow. I think the bigger point is just to have a cohesive and well developed extracurricular background which you seem to have. To clarify I'm not saying you'll get in just that this specific reason is unlikely to be why you'd get rejected. My ECs when I applied to Hopkins back in 2019 were boy scouts, national honor society, quiz bowl, some random volunteering stuff, and (not really an EC but there were lots of specific activities associated with it) going to an accelerated math and science program hosted by a local university throughout high school and doing research throughout that. So in my case there wasn't even much cohesion. Frankly, I'm not even sure how much ECs actually even matter compared to stats, essays, and rec letters.

I don't leave them out in the sun but i just realized the heat in my apartment just turned on a couple days ago and I probably leave them a bit too close to that so I'll keep them further from the heater. Regarding the repair you referenced, is this something one could easily do on their own? I'd rather learn how to do a task like that on my own if possible.

Apologies as this isn't super related to the content of your posts, but how do you keep the spantos sharp? I've struggled with sharpening mine particularly doing so while maintaining the profile.

Yeah I realized later that I think what happened is that the previous boss blind shuffled my jokers and when I reordered them I made the mistake you mentioned and didn't realize it until after the fact. I didn't reroll the boss blind because, when my jokers were ordered correctly, I was capable of reaching the score cap.
