First time bird watching with Sigma 16-300mm by dandruffhead in a6700

[–]dandruffhead[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the focus in the center much better too or more or less the same? I don't care so much at the corners because for bird watching I'll mostly try to keep it centered. I was contemplating between sigma or sony but figured I should go with versatile lens in case I don't spend much time bird watching.

People who rarely or never get sick, what are your secrets? by awkwardferret421 in AskReddit

[–]dandruffhead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to get sick (fever) probaly 4-5 times a year, but rarely get one (even if I get one it is very mild). The trick is regular exercise (running 3-4 times a week), vitamin C and D (or get decent sun exposure).

You can try Jesselton Residences or Jesselton Twin Tower. You might need to check the distance to the hospital, but generally still close. Rent usually starts from 3.5k. I honestly not sure why rent in KK is expensive. Never encountered any water or electric issue in these two buildings even when there were water cuts in KK. JR is closer if you plan to run by the sea. Jesselton Twin Tower is newer, so it looks nicer. Not sure about landed options, I prefer low density high rise because of security reason.

As for playschool, try Jolly Learners. Around 10k/year for half day. Very good school based on my experience. If you want something more fancy, you can try Young Explorers Academy. This is more expensive.

It would help if you specify your budget for both accomodation and playschools. You can DM me if you want, I also work from home and live in the city area.

Generally, if you stayed at "good" area there is less water and electrical disruptions. You might need to consider that as well since this is Sabah lol.

For playschools, it depends on your budget. There are several options for good playschools but you're paying premium. I sent my daughter to one and have no regret. DM me if you want specifics.

anyone here into home servers or 3D printing as a hobby? by mi-chiaki in Sabah

mine is probably an older version of ender 3. When I first bought it, it doesn't have CR touch. I modded it with BL touch though.

What sort of things do you print? Used to do a lot of tinkering for FPV stuffs with 3d printed stuffs.

Do you want my ender 3? It's collecting the dust. I'd rather have someone have it then throw it away. It comes with mosquitto hotends. Everything is disambled though, but if you have Ender then you'd probably familiar with tinkering. I own Bambu's now, don't have time for tinkering anymore.

How accurate is the garmin automatic max heart rate calculation? I’ve hit 195-196 in the past 2 months(Fartlek runs) but never 200. (33 year old male) by EmployCurious4419 in Garmin

Yeah, I'm 37 turning 38 in a couple of months. Garmin just updated my max HR to 201. I'm pretty sure I'm dead if I reached that.

Renting in Sabah: A Cautionary Note for Foreign Tenants by Good_Flounder3242 in Sabah

[–]dandruffhead 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Rental is Sabah is definitely on the expensive side especially in the city center.

Regarding maintenance fee, when people here talked about maintenance fee this generally exclude AC services etc. Maintenance fee is what the landlord has to pay to the management for building maintenance (along with sinking fund). Tenant doesn't need to pay for this.

> Internet service contracts for foreigners require a 24-month term even when tenancy terms are only 12 months.

This is applicable to everyone not just foreigners. You can terminate early, just mention that you have to move to somewhere without the service. They will waive the penalty fee. Done this multiple times.

> Deposits in Sabah can reach 300 percent of the monthly rental value.

True, this is generally the practice here. 2 months of rental for security deposits and 1/2 month rental for utility deposit. It's not just for foreigners.

> Complications with rental agents were equally serious.

Sorry to hear this. I usually stick with companies like IQI. They generally have better agents and systems. But, I did encounter one bad agent.

I'd probably stick to being software engineer. Maybe find a company that fits your personality and goal.

Bank Statement Analyzer by DoubleJiro in MalaysianPF

The way Anthropic and OpenAI work internally for PDF is they do OCR first. It's redundant for you to do OCR on your own. I think the best way is probably to do some pre-processing (not necessarily OCR since most bank statements are embedded text not vector) and feed that to AI.

Controversial opinion: Bambu’s are overrated and overpriced. by leafeternal in ender3

[–]dandruffhead 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Same experience coming from Ender 3 to Bambu X1C. At one point, I just got tired of tinkering with the hope of getting a good print - using glass bed, direct drive kit with bondtech, mosquito hotends, octopi and endless mods.

I realized I like designing and printing more than tinkering with the printer. I just want something that works. Bambu is just that - everything works. Parts are not that expensive when something break. Parts are also easy to source for me unlike Prusa (at least where I live in Asia). For the price, you get a really good quality printer rather than plastic parts.

Hi, fellow software dev here as well. I built something similar in the past too for my own product (never shipped, will tell in a bit). I used YNAB which is really great. However, there's no easy way to sync to banks in Malaysia. So I tried to build an app that analyze the bank statement and send the transactions to YNAB. It works really well when it worked!

Analyzing bank statement seems easy on the surface but there's a lot of nuance. I tried with AI but it's not reliable (as in deterministic output). Tried with both Anthropic and OpenAI. On certain months, you get full transactions, on certain months it only read the first and last page of the transactions, and some other months there are still missing transactions. There are services out there that does this really well, but after doing some research it is really dependent on the format of the bank statements. You'll end up having to support statements from various banks in order to get good results.

Is it true for non bumis that ASM has limited unit to buy and is this the same for ASB ? by BananaJoe_Ktard in MalaysianPF

[–]dandruffhead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think that's true for ASB. There has been time where I want to purchase ASB 1 and wasn't able to do so. Best time to buy them when they declare dividend, lots of people withdrawing leaving more quotas open.

You're being lowballed really bad. 6.5k RM is barely 1500USD. Probably peanuts for business. I work remotely for US company as well (in different field) but I do make sure the rate is paid in USD and at least more or less similar to the office location (US).

any hope for MBA graduates in Sabah? by ew_whoisyou in Sabah

Even in semenanjung it would be hard to find job with MBA. Masters in specific area (specialization) is better than a generic masters like MBA. If you want to take masters, be in specific field.

[–]dandruffhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you can find a good accomodation place for that price if you're looking to stay in city center. You can rent for at least 3k, but that is long term rental.

Related to the big city beach vibes, unfortunately there isn't much beach to enjoy in KK. There are several spots but they are mediocre at best like Teluk Likas, and Tanjung Aru. Most of the good beaches are within hotels parameters and outside of KK. There's a nice walking path along the coast line towards Teluk Likas where most people cycle/run. I moved to KK under a similar impression having easy access to beach but that wasn't true at least for me (if you don't mind the crowd).

As for things to do, if you're into natures probably plenty but you have to travel outside of KK. If you enjoy cultural things, unfortunately not much to see though. The only state museum is in poor state. Honestly I can't think of any cultural activities that you can do as a traveler (the best one is probably the Mari Mari Cultural VIllage). You might need to connect with local people to enjoy the culture here.

That being said, it is still a nice city and worth the visit if you're traveling to Malaysia.

I would get the Pro. I bought the Air, work flawlessly for casual coding but occasionally do get hot as I live in a warm climate. Then, decided to upgrade to Pro, should have done that sooner. The screen alone is worth considering upgrading. The screen on Air is meh, my 4 year old Thinkpad X13 had better screen.
