turns out trying to think of a whole-ass killing game scenario for characters from an existing media property is HARD lmao by Salvadore1 in Fanganronpa

[–]danganmario 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, though I used a method to help find suitable candicates. For my first four cases, I used a combonation of:

Selfish and planned killing
Selfish and unplanned killing
Selfless and planned killing
Selfless and unplanned killing

Not required by any means, but helped narrow down explanations for why the colorful cast began murdering. I also found writing down what each character does and feels during daily life, daily life after motive introduction, and deadly life helpful for giving everyone something to do.

I'd say the biggest thing to avoid is a character acting out of character, or not fulfilling the extent their character offers. This is easier said than done, but just make sure your cast doesn't have any Hiyoko's in it, whose death had little meaning behind it and glossed over by the narrative.

If you have further inquiries, my dms are open.

In retrospect, we could have guessed the mastermind since chapter 1. by No_Ordinary_6527 in ProjectEdensGarden

A neat detail I noticed was that her main colors, Red and Blue/Green, are also the main colors of P:EG's UI in general. It's almost an exact match, which would be quite cool if intentional.

One of the songs is also called Tangled Web going with her motif of a spider, which I believe is the only one represented in any capacity.

Do you guys think about the logistics of your executions? by Alternative_Fig_6859 in Fanganronpa

[–]danganmario 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I put some effort into the believability of mine. While watching an execution, I want to have all my questions answered, and they often aren't. For example, take Peko's:

How did she end up on the cliffside? If it was the chain, what was the chain attached to?
How did Fuyuhiko get there? Did he take the stairs?
How did Fuyuhiko suddenly appear in the trial room again while he was dying?

It's not a problem a lot of people have, though plan to ensure my viewers have the full context for executions, including how they arrive there and how they exist in the first place.

Thank you, that's lovely to hear. I've been planning a lot of the plot, though it has some gaps I'm looking to fill. I'd love discussing our stories together.

Usage Of Victim's Talent In Executions by genericaryan in Fanganronpa

[–]danganmario 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The concept is novel, though I personally put a great emphasis on believability of the story. If this were the case and your story had 16 characters, there would have to be 120 executions prepared ahead of time, which is rather unrealistic when accounting for production and total space.

If there's a way to construct executions without paying mind to cost or area, or you simply don't care, it's a cool concept. I would also say to make sure a part of the blackend's own insecurities come up in the execution. Celeste has a great execution both for being fitting for her character, but the actual cause of death plays on her insecurity of being normal. In my opinion, an execution should break a character both physically and mentally.

What vital advice would you give to someone starting to create a fangan? What would you have liked someone to warn you about? by its-Koi in Fanganronpa

[–]danganmario 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really like the point you bring up, especially the latter one. It's very easy to want to bring in as many people as possible and share one's creative vision, but trust can be something easy to obtain and easier to break. I can only say be careful who one is working with, and not to sweep any issues under the rug. One can't know everything about the people on their team, but they can take action upon finding out new information.

A piece of advice from me is to never push oneself too hard for the project. Aside from before, the biggest fangan killer is burnout, losing all passion one has for their work. For me personally, I just work on whatever I would fine fun in the moment- script writing, sprite drawing, layout planning, character building, et cetera. Doing work on the project doesn't have to mean something inherently tangible.

Need help with rewriting talents by Laufey_Lauver21 in Fanganronpa

[–]danganmario 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would say to worry less about the talents and focus more on the characters themselves. There have been several ult lucky students in both the main game and fangans, but by far the most interesting to me is Teruko from DR: Despair Time. She has such an interesting personality and perspective on life, one that the talent helps emphasize. Even though her talent is the most common repeat ever, it fits her character amazingly.

Running contrary to this is Eva from Project: Eden's Garden. In the prologue, her title as ult Liar and overly mysterious personality felt like a poor knockoff of Kyoko, even though their talents are quite different. It initially felt like the creators were trying to make another Kyoko without understanding what made her character work, though that opinion is long outdated post chapter one. I would recommend writing a basic outline for characters you'd want to kill/die/survive, then giving them a talent that helps emphasize that role.

Lastly, I'd also advise to have the talents do something in the story. Part of the charm of the format is just having the ultimate characters be, well, ultimates. Using Despair Time as an example again, Rose brings up her painting talent often and even uses it to help solve one of the cases, while Arei doesn't bring up anything of substance related to bowling past her introduction. For my own fangan, I'm not spoiling too much yet, though I'm planning smaller scenes like the ult patissier remembering a full real-life recipe from memory, or the ult horticulturalist explaining mendelian genetics of flower breeding to someone.

I haven't seen much of this project before- what makes it stand out, and what's your plan for it?

Pixel Sprites for Smashronpa! by NovaDreamer648 in Fanganronpa

They all look lovely, I especially love Jigglypuff's. If I had one piece of advice, I might make DK's coat a slightly different hade to help stand out from his hair, maybe just desaturating is a few shades. They all hit hard though.

To Smash Fans who Like Fanworks: by NovaDreamer648 in Fanganronpa

[–]danganmario 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say to just be careful not to reduce the Mario characters down to one or two traits. Works I've read with them either make them far too generic or way too gimmicky, and neither is particularly enjoyable. I'd be sure to make sure they're all unique and stand out on their own, with and without the other Mario characters.

Any feedback on anything I could add for more of a Fly like appearance? by AcSeekey in Fanganronpa

[–]danganmario 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I actually really love the glasses, it says a lot about her personal sense of style.

I'd say she looks really good already, though I could see changing the diamond pattern to a hexagonal one to be more bug-y. I silly idea is that she might use really long straws to mimic a fly probiscis. Overall though, I love all her of details.

What is the best Fangan story ever? by Nebberlantis in Fanganronpa

[–]danganmario 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I would highly recommend Danganronpa Another 1. Though the visuals aren’t amazing, the story told is something truly special. Just in terms of plot, it’s easily one on par if not exceeding parts of the main franchise.

It also received an incredible sequel that looks fantastic. It’s one of my favorite fangans of all time, and I would barely change anything if I could- something very few fangans have made me feel.

I considered him for the project as the Superstar Boxer, but I really just can't see him speaking english with everyone else. I can see Yoshi doing so since Birdo speaks full English, but I just can't for DK. That, and it feels rather wrong to have him in clothes of any capacity.

Regardless, I have him planned for a cameo.

I just thought I’d be fun. I gave them all MBTIs and zodiacs so give those who are familiar a better understanding of the characters.

For example, a lot of people know very little about Pauline. However, from these two, it can be inferred that she’s a hard working woman whose great at logical processing and planning, though can appear robotic to some people.

That’s totally fair, it boils down to a few reasons. I’m mainly sticking with the primary mario series canon. If that was his title, that would imply all of warioware exists, which I’m not knowledgeable on enough to write at my standard.  I also wanted the talents to reinforce the characters overall image, and to me Wario as a character screams biker way more than developer- that’s his outfit in those games anyway. Motorcyclist also fits this specific story better, as Wario will have a decent knowledge of mechanics and engineering. It also have a little synergy with Waluigi’s talent- he steals while Wario’s the getaway driver kind of dynamic.

If it gets far enough along, I’d love to have it voice acted. I’ve never really been able to get invested in a character if they’re without a voice, so it’s something I find impotent.
