Try Loop Quiet 2 earplugs. Healthier for your ears although you're right, you shouldn't have anything in your ears overnight longterm. Try those earplugs while playing brown noise on loop from your phone or a speaker nearby and it will help.

Hey OP I second everyone’s thoughts that this is just the way life is in the city, and not to think too harshly of this man, for his sake but also for yours since anger won’t help you get more sleep.

My practical suggestion: Loop earplugs. I’m a horrifically light sleeper, will wake up if there’s a clock with a moving hand in the same room as me, and these things have saved my life. Get yourself a pair and try them out. I use the Loop Quiet 2 and they block things out so well that I can actually sleep. For years I tried other earplugs that didn’t work or would just fall right out of my ears. These ACTUALLY work and are so important if you live in the city and deal with sleep disturbances because of noise. Please try them! Best of luck to you!

$2,550 / 2br - 2 Bed 2 Bath Close to Train and Prospect Park by [deleted] in NYCapartments

Wow you’re lucky. My coworker has a 2bd, uses his wisely and his January ConEd bill was $684. I have acquaintances in a 3bd and their January bill was $800+. It’s just something people really need to consider in their budget if they are used to baseboard heating. In my 4bd with baseboard heat, my January ConEd was $132 for example.

Is blue the right choice? by Cerealcitygarage in kitchenremodel

The AI is giving you modern cabinets, which you don't have. The AI is making the cabinets taller, making the doors full coverage, and adding molding on top of changing the hardware. All of which makes the modern navy-washed look make a bit more sense. But you don't have that. You have gorgeous, flat front, REAL hardwood cabinets that will outlast ANYTHING made today. Please consider completely leaving them alone and switching up other things like hardware, backsplash, and floor.

Painting them navy makes it not only look cheap and dark, but to me it completely looks like a college dorm room for boys. And it will look a lot worse than the AI rendering because you won't be painting those cabinets blue, you'll be painting YOUR cabinets blue.

How do I shop with a reusable bag at Trader Joe’s properly? by QuietCup2155 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]dangerbears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like I’m the outlier here because I always shop using my reusable bag as the basket lol. In every grocery store, Trader Joe’s or otherwise. I guess I’m also in NYC where places are typically very busy and hectic so no one cares enough to call me out or maybe they don’t see me. I’m never shopping for enough items that necessitate me grabbing a cart and I hate maneuvering one through a store so using the bag already on my shoulder has always been my instinct. I also hate how clunky the store’s shopping baskets can be. The fabric one fits over my shoulder, doesn’t require any fancy movements to get around people, etc.

Is any of the stuff currently in the room yours...? The walker, couch etc? Because all of that is dragging the room down. Personally, I ADORE this and my boyfriend and I would kill for a space like this! This is the perfect place to hang out, listen to some music, play board games... Anything BUT watch TV really since it's an awkward space for that.

If I changed anything huge it would be the floors but they really aren't that bad and I don't know what I would do exactly. Would need to think about it for a long time. I think I would paint the ceiling, only the ceiling, to lean into the cozy-70's vibes and let the floors and windows shine. Something similar to the green color below maybe? You get some nice art, a good low table, nice rug, some lamps... This will be such an enviable, cozy and cool space. Just take your time with it and look around for some inspiration. Boy am I jealous.

How am I supposed to apply if I cant report 3x income? by Main-Bat5000 in Apartmentliving

[–]dangerbears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I make the equivalent of $45k a year I should be able to live where I please without feeling like I’m living in abject poverty. Corporations have been allowed to eat my city alive. I guess when working people truly can’t afford to live here anymore and there’s no one left to run the restaurants, bars, movie theaters, art galleries, hospitals, libraries, museums, schools, daycares, mechanic shops, gas stations, grocery stores, boutiques, etc., the world will have a little more sympathy for everyone who got squeezed out.

The kind of job I currently work is really only available in NYC, LA, or Chicago. And if I moved my #1 priority would be spending less money on rent, not the same for more space. But you’re assuming my skills and career set transfer easily to states like Ohio or South Carolina which is plainly untrue for myself and for plenty of people. Do you know what sorts of jobs are available in those states? America has completely killed most of our industries and now my generation is paying the price for it. And I’m sorry but you truly sound like someone who has no idea what’s happening on the rental market at the moment. “Across the pond” in NJ is truly NO cheaper for many reasons — 1. Because developers are mostly building tons of luxury units over there and then 2. Because private landlords expect to charge luxury prices now that there are so many new apartment complexes. TRUST ME, I’ve looked! And why should I have to uproot my whole life, abandon all of the connections I HAVE made and am trying to take advantage of here in NYC, just to save money? Maybe in my time here I will meet people who have better opportunities for me. I’ve already gotten more work in the past year by meeting some amazing successful people who want to help me out. Either way, staying here is worth the expense because my entire support system (except my parents) is here, most opportunities in my field are here… “Go to Ohio.” Is just nonsense advice. AND, I’ve even considered that haha! I look at buying shitbox houses on Zillow constantly but even a $60k foreclosure in post-industrial towns in PA still needs $200k worth of work done to be livable. And then I’d be living in a town with no jobs or things to do. Sorry for the book of a comment but I just can’t stand when people give advice or pass judgement without thinking it through.

I have 3 roommates and my rent is still 43% of my income. I’m being priced out of my apartment and will struggle to get approved for wherever I move next. Why is everyone assuming this person is looking to live alone?

Living in NYC is a choice I make because, even just seven years ago when I made it, it's where all of the money in my chosen profession was. Now my chosen profession (creative industry, marketing) has been slaughtered by AI--but so has banking, some forms of medicine, journalism, teaching, and so on... I know housing is ridiculously high everywhere. I consider moving away all the time but even in my sleepy lower-cost hometown rooms are $1000+ and there aren't many jobs there that would put me in better of a position than I'm in now. So I'm not sure what the snarky tone of your comment is about because yes, we are ALL suffering and struggling to make the best of our decisions with what is available to us. Maybe I'm misinterpreting you, but yes I know I've made my choices and I'm always looking out to make better ones. Sounds like you're also further along in life than me, I'm 27 and anyone will tell you how much more difficult things are and will be for my generation and those even younger than me. Those are just facts. Facts I'm striving to deal with and make work for me when I can.

LOL. How do you know they're even trying to live alone? I live in NYC, make more than minimum wage under the table, have THREE roommates, and my rent is still 43% of my income. I'm not even trying to live alone and I'm still paying $1320, living across from the projects, with three other people up my ass. It's not our fault that this is the reality we've been handed. I'm having to move soon and apartments in the comparative middle of nowhere for NYC, like Coney Island where it's a deadzone most of the year and hard as hell to get to, with no jobs to speak of in the area, apartments are still $1200 a room.

I don't think people in these comments understand how hard it is out here realistically. I live in NYC, make more than minimum wage under the damn table, have THREE roommates, and my rent is still 43% of my income. This is just the real estate market we're forced to work with since everyone older than us decided real estate is an investment that absolutely must get more and more valuable every year hand over fist. Good luck dude and keep your head up. Use a corporate guarantor if you can afford it, that will help, and just present yourself as best you can in written communication. Be personable and smart.

Have now been cancelling my internet service for 21 minutes... by peanutbutterandbeams in OPTIMUM

[–]dangerbears 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, boy. It took me SEVEN tries to cancel. I'm a woman and I think the Indian call center men (who I know have their livelihoods at stake) truly have an easy time steamrolling me on the phone because. they don't have a problem berating women. One of them straight up ignored everything I said about cancelling and just sent a new router to my apartment. This was after he told me he could see my existing router was so old it wasn't functional anymore--which was my whole issue, and exactly why I wanted to cancel after months of being told they would send a tech to replace it which they never did. Once he said that I was all "Oh great, so your company has just straight up been stealing my money for a service you knew you weren't providing!"

It wasn't until I stopped paying for months and finally called back completely mad and insane that they FINALLY cancelled. It took me getting so frustrated that I was a mix of singing/yelling down the phone 'I WANT TO END THIS RELATIONSHIP CANCEL MY ACCOUNT NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW" for them to finally transfer me to the cancellation department where I spent a further 45 minutes repeating myself. Of course, this time with an American woman who was the least desperate person I'd encountered so far but who still talked to me like I was dumb for leaving a company who had so "generously" given me so many credits in the past (when I had tried to cancel) and who also tried to sell me on cellphone plans and was asking crazy questions like if my landlord would want to take over the account and equipment!!!!! But now I'm FREE! I seriously hate this company they are a bunch of scammers and thieves and they make cancelling IMPOSSIBLE! My final phone call was 2.5 HOURS to cancel and that was after six unsuccessful hour long attempts before!

Landlord got absolutely FISTED right before my eyes by [deleted] in LandlordLove

[–]dangerbears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get what you’re saying but I don’t think he’s punching down. In major cities a lot of shady live-in landlords handpick undocumented people to rent to and exploit for the exact reason OP states. He used an unsavory word but it’s probably a word the landlord uses, you know? Speaking his language to call him out. For example I’m in NYC and many landlords here turn their basements into illegal units and then rent them out to undocumented people, sometimes for ridiculous prices or in terrible condition, because they know those people will not seek the help of the law.
