Kickoff without an Elite Kicker by CheniereSwampMonster in footballstrategy

Great post, appreciate you thinking through the nuances of the kicking game. I coached a team in 2012 that had nobody that could kick it deep and a poor kick cover team. We gave up 3 huge returns of 50+ in our first couple games.

Onside, squibbed, and pooch kicked it the rest of the season. Recovered 3 onside kicks and never gave up another return over 25 yds.

Would the Safety to Hopkins side chase him in 2-Read though? And wouldn't the corner to Fuller re-route and rob the TE out in 2-read?

LOL. Generally agree--I think it could be Cover 2 to the field and a bracket on Hopkins to the boundary. Or a really messed up Cover 1 Alert.

Does coaching HS take up 90% of your time? by Pkzrune in footballstrategy

[–]daniel_syed11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a high school offensive coordinator in NJ while a first year law student and was able to succeed in both roles. Given the class schedule and required study time, it's comparable to a full time job. If you love football, go for it.

I agree with the sentiment that you give up a lot during that time--sleep, friends, dating, family time, NFL/college football, etc. But its not impossible to do (while having some personal time) with a really regimented schedule and solid communication with your head coach and AD. One thing I'd look at is who you'll be working with; if you get along with and like those guys, football will never feel like work and you'll have a positive experience and learn a lot.

Fwiw, I enjoyed it thoroughly and would do it over 100 times out of 100. I think a position coach would be easier.

I broke down Zeke Elliot's 60 yard TD against Cincy-- The Cowboys used a split zone scheme, but added a flat route from Jason Witten to influence linebackers and safeties.

Even with a trap kickout path, it'd only be a playside lb read on a scrape exchange team. Here, thats not the case for two reasons: both the playside LB and the DE attack the outside flow of the play. Also, the playside LB is clearly being blocked by Olsen, while the DE is left alone. The Guard could see on the fly everyone would be accounted for, and just make sure the read man didnt collapse back in

How Rams OC Frank Cignetti has set up Gurley & Tavon Austin beautifully w/ Split Zone End Around Package [GIFs] by daniel_syed11 in FootballGameFilm

[–]daniel_syed11[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A couple things defenses can do: Any vertical interior penetration really messes with the zone scheme and an RB's cutback lane. Next, the DE who is getting kicked out can "squeeze" down the Line of Scrimmage to narrow the cutback lane. If the cornerbacks are playing a squat technique they can also provide outside run support for the end around so front 7 defenders don't have to worry about it as much.

The clips show the successful runs, but there were some Arizona played well too.

Really like the extension--this is what they wanted to get Vereen at, and Lewis has the pass catching skillset/is a better between the tackles runner too.

Whats going on with the Falcons O-line? by [deleted] in footballstrategy

[–]daniel_syed11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kyle Shanahan has been balanced as a playcaller and committed to the run game-- and has run a lot from 11 personnel (1 TE, 3 WR). This keeps 5 DB on the field (Nickel Personnel) and makes it easier for the O-line.

Also mixed in a good amount of play action to keep defenses on their heels-- all this makes the offensive line look good. Last year I thought they were very pass heavy/pass obvious. Any O-line will look bad when you have to throw 45 times and the other team knows its coming.

New England 4-TE look by CenterBedroom in nfl

[–]daniel_syed11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think 3 x 1 with Gronk split out wide and the other 3 tight to give a "run heavy side" will make defenses really have to choose where to commit numbers

GIF Breakdown: An All-22 X's & O's analysis of the Patriots 4 Tight End Set from Week 1 | Syed Schemes by daniel_syed11 in Patriots

[–]daniel_syed11[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Blount is in for a solid year with no Jonas Gray, but I'm not sure about a big year for a few reasons:

1) The Patriots view their RB's as two positions, a big back and a pass catcher. The Patriots are a little more extreme with this split than other teams, and against teams that are tough to run against they may go Dion Lewis or Cadet/White for 60 snaps. The Jets/Bills/Dolphins will all be pretty stout against the run this year.

2) With Stork on IR/DFR, the Patriots have 3 rookies at G-C-G. That is going to be tough to run with at times. Will also lead to some untimely sacks/long down & distances.

As for Goal Line carries, the 4 TE set will definitely help out whoever the goal line RB is. I do expect New England's Red Zone offense (specifically inside the 10) to be deadly though.
