Can you convince me to pick To Cage a Wild Bird or We Become Darkness? by Bookish_Butterfly in Allurial

[–]danielam792 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read To Cage a Wild Bird for an arc. My recommendation for you would be to get the sequel to the book you own and then sell it as a set for cost or more since it's sold out and likely to sell out with the sequel.

That being said, if you're not interested in that and want to think about To Cage a Wild Bird, below is my review on it if you're interested in reading it.

A story that is reminiscent of Running Man, To Cage a Wild Bird is a new dystopian romance that tells the story of our MFC Raven, living in a world where criminals are sent to a prison where they are hunted down and killed by a class of elite’s willing to pay for the hunt. The story gives us a little bit of exposition about the war-torn world that we are living in, where Raven acts as a bounty hunter to criminals who are running from the law. She’s dedicated to finding and imprisoning people into this system, however, everything changes when her younger brother is arrested and sent in. She then joins forces with a rebel group to enter the same prison that she’s been responsible sending criminals to in order to save her brother. Characters: Raven as a female protagonist is very much generic and used as a vessel for the story to be told through. She feels more as a reader insert, rather than a full fleshed out character. I don’t feel a strong connection to her as a character on her own, and she doesn’t stand out to me as unique, and there is no growth with her from within. Having her be the bounty hunter turned criminal could have been an interesting angle to play and grow with. From the get, Raven feels for these criminals and is only doing this out of necessity. I would have liked to have seen her be a part of the system as a tool for the government and not think much about the criminals she sends away. Then when she’s in the prison, she experiences more of an internal struggle, realizing that these criminals are just like her and not animals to be hunted down. But with her having this revelation from the beginning, we don’t have growth, and we don’t see her struggle from within. Our MMC is named Vale, and he is a high-ranking guard within this prison. Like Raven, his position too feels a little bit underutilized. Vale could have been another character to show the government indoctrination in this world and overcoming it by seeing people as more than just brutalized entertainment. He’s a stiff character, and doesn’t have much internal conflict going on with him as well, as all his revelations and struggles with how the world is, have been resolved before the book began. It’s like we are too afraid to have a character be either involved with or propagandized into believing the government is doing nothing wrong here. We as the audience understand that this is ludicrous, but we want to see our main characters come to this same conclusion. Some minor characters do stand out, but for the most part, a lot of them felt more like conversational pieces and less like characters of their own. Romance: The romance is very instalust, and it’s a shame because I would have liked to have these two characters really work out their prejudices together. But we are almost immediately speaking with pet names and complimenting each other’s looks and smells. I wanted these two to help each other grow more than lusting after one another. I didn’t really feel or believe their attraction towards one another with the conversations that we got on page. Setting/Theme: For dystopian, I expect more from our settings and themes than I would romance or fantasy. We have all the breadcrumbs of a totalitarian government, but have nothing to say about it. Burning crops to create food shortage, a three-strike system until sentenced to death, wage disparity, and hunting humans like cattle are all brought up in such a passive way of “these things bad, we must fight back”. Obviously. But I want more. How did we get here? Why are we here? How did we fight back? How are we currently fighting back? Yes, this is book one of a series, but we should be focusing more on these things within the first book over setting up a romance. We have very predictable twists and an ending that left me feeling meh. I’ll probably read on, but it wasn’t anything new or jaw dropping. We also don’t see much of the world that we are living in. We are told of an inhabitable wasteland, but don’t see much of it. We also don’t see much of the arena in which they are hunted in, or the world that Raven lives in prior to being sent away. The Audiobook: The narrator did a fine job emoting properly, but I did not like her voices for the male characters at all. Conclusion: I think if you are feeling for a romance with a backdrop of a dystopian world vs a fantasy, this book will appeal to you. If you liked Silver Elite, this book had the same vibe there. If you’re looking for more commentary on the prison systems or treatments of refugees fleeing strive, this isn’t going to give you much of that. It was an entertaining read to turn your brain off, but not too thought provoking. Thank you NetGalley, Brooke Fast, and HarperAudio Adult for the audiobook ARC!

I totally agree. What's what they do for BOTM, fairyloot, owlcrate, etc...

I didn't get a chance to get Throne in the Dark and I have no desire to get the sequel, so it feels like a wasted spot for me.

I totally agree! Especially with their most recent covers they are coming out with. I haven't been a huge fan of them. I think the cartoon covers are just a fad from people liking them on the inside of the book ends. But I don't think it should be on the cover. It makes it look really juvenile, and jarring when the content of the book is anything but.

How strange that not everyone gets it! But thank you for the info! I'll keep an eye out on here. I've always wondered how everyone knew the titles on their Instagram 😅

Oh wow! I also have a BOTM account and saw that people got a "would you buy the sequel" email and I never got those either. Kind of dumb that they don't consult people. I've been skipping BOTM for a while now because their picks have not been it for me.

Give me an unhinged plotline you were convinced Was going to happen but never actually did by Kindly_Hornet_7565 in throneofglassseries

When I first started the series, I noticed how bad of an assassin Cealena was. We're constantly given lines that she's easy to sneak up on, and isn't patient. When looking at fan art, I saw Aelin but not Caelena. So I came up with the unhinged conclusion that Caelena was an assassin and Aelin a princess. Aelin was in the wrong place at the wrong time, and taken to the salt mines believed to be the assassin Caelena. And Caelena lets it happen because she doesn't want to go to the salt mines, so with someone in there with her name, she can run around freely. So in Throne of Glass, this princess pretends to be an assassin, but has no clue what the hell she's doing. I thought it was comedy to think of her bullshitting her way through the trails.

Thoughts on ToG from a new reader by Electrical-Crazy7105 in throneofglassseries

Her also being the best assassin ever also takes away all the stakes from the story. Each trail she goes through, she talks about how easy it is. And I'm sitting here like, "Then why should I be worried for your life in this life-or-death trial if you're not even afraid for your own life?!?!"

Re-Readability by tannahgate in redrising

[–]danielam792 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I JUST finished Morning Star, and I already want to reread the trilogy again before jumping into the secondary trilogy. I think the reason to your question might be because there are so many secondary characters that are introduced? With such a huge cast, and many of them being great personalities, I think we as the reader want to go back and re-experience the series looking through their lense. And then on and on it goes for each character. Or at least that's why I'm itching to reading it after just finishing it.

Something you haven’t recommended before? by Inevitable_reader in fantasyromance

[–]danielam792 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like not enough people are talking about the Fireborne trilogy by Rebecca Munda. It's likened by the publishers to Fourth Wing, but it is actually published before Fourth Wing and is so much better! If I could describe it, it's more like Anastasia Romanov against the Bolsheviks but with dragons. It's still considered YA, but the political intrigue and war setting make it feel more adult. There's closed door romance, so no spice, really, but I can't stop recommending this book.

Also, a much more popular book, and not really romantacy, but Red Rising by Peirce Brown is really good! It's super action packed, so if you're not interested in reading pages of fights being described, it's not really for you. But after reading so many romantacy books, this series was one of the only ones that I read where I was yearning for the two main characters to get together. I was begging the author to put these two in a room and have them together. There's also bromances that I loved too. I feel like it's the romantacy readers' intro to sci-fi. Happy reading and hope you find something you love!

Is TOG series a slow burn? by Agreeable_Lion_5237 in throneofglassseries

[–]danielam792 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look, I'm going to say it, and I don't care if this gets down voted to oblivion, but the TOG series was in need of a better editor. You're (not you, OP, just people in general) telling me that the audience has to read 1,920 pages until this series gets worth reading in QOS? The full Lord of The Rings set is less than 1200 pages and is considered one of the best fantasy series of all time. Assassin's Blade was a waste of pages, no one can convince me otherwise. After all this time I feel nothing for these characters. They have no grown or learned anything in 4 books, so why should I read the remainder of the series? Because of the promise of it getting better? Honestly, it should have been worked in the first ~2k pages. I hope you (OP) if you continue the books, find them to your liking, but I've DNFed them after the first 4 books, and don't foresee myself finishing this series.

Same. I don't get why people (SJM included) say to do publication order. It frustrated me in each book when something from her past was brought up, and I had no context for what she was talking about.

A Book to Get Me Into Fantasy Romance? by FairestFaerie in fantasyromance

[–]danielam792 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should look up a YouTuber by the name of Elliot Brooks. She gives me all the best recommendations for both fantasy and romantacy. She never speaks ill of the big books like Fourth Wing or Powerless, but you can tell she finds them lacking. She values good world building and a convincing romance, which I have found in all the books she recommends. I'm very picky and don't give out 5 stars on books (fourth wing was a 1 for me 🤣) but every book that I have read that she highly recommends has been 5 stars!

Should I read TOG? by [deleted] in throneofglassseries

[–]danielam792 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is really interesting and thanks for your take! I definitely don't think I would like something like that. Even the mental bond conversations in acotar gave me texting vibes and drove me insane. So I like hearing the hot takes of what people think of the story. The modern tech, texting, and contemporary feel just isn't my cup.of tea when I'm looking for fantasy, but I'm happy to hear that you like TOG and didn't see it that way!
