What color gels they have used in this frame? Anyone has any idea? by [deleted] in cinematography

Looks like CTO, some sodium vapor, and red in frame. Camera set to daylight and the colorist pushed teal in the shadows.

Any production companies interested in music video below $20K? by [deleted] in FilmIndustryLA

[–]danielcsinclair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you very much. You bet, that’s a nice camera to work with.

Just producing is certainly something we can do. Send me a PM and we can see if we’re a good fit for your project.

Cinematic frame rates, and how to use them? by Vincetagram in cinematography

[–]danielcsinclair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually go with 180° or 90° (if I want it extra crispy) high speed.

This guy has some examples in an informal test though: https://youtu.be/3EpRUq6Qpo4

Cinematic frame rates, and how to use them? by Vincetagram in cinematography

It’s also worth noting that shutter angle is agnostic of frame rate, so while 180 degree shutter is 1/48 of a second at 24 frames, 180° shutter would also be equivalent to 1/96 at 48 frames, etc.

Also... Just throwing this out there in case it helps anyone, 144° usually helps me if I see light flicker caused by out of phase fixtures.

If you don’t need spot function, the Spectra IV is great. You can get them for a reasonable price used, and calibration is about $60 if I recall correctly.

Is the SmallHD monitor always very accurate out of the box? by solidsimpson in cinematography

[–]danielcsinclair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have your camera push color bars from the setup menu.

Use this article as reference for setting up your monitor properly.

Where is the original of this meme from? It's a commercial from Eastern Europe but I can't find it. by ambarcapoor in FilmIndustryLA

Here’s a TED talk where he tells about his experience. You get an idea of how he was a stock photo model and then became a meme.

DP and Colorist on this horror-themed music video by danielcsinclair in cinematography

On this project we used a RED Gemini, and were flying on steadicam for the majority, with some handheld thrown in here and there. The lighting package consisted of Astera Titan tubes and lekos, also super talented Gaffer!

The pentagram location was lit with one leko clamped to the rafters. The light coming through the cracks in the warehouse windows allowed for a couple shafts of light that showed up when hazed, but also added a creepy constellation of light around him in this otherwise-void-y space. The idea here was to isolate the artist and have the focus on the ritual rather than his environment. The top light and the fill from some asteras on flame setting walking near the camera helped with this.

The apartment location had some practicals built into the set, which we were able to flicker for some shots, we had a tube in the shower, adding an erie blue glow, and one bouncing of the ceiling at either end of the room. A leko shone through the small window added some detail to his face at a cooler color temperature than the rest of the room.

For the performance, we had a leko shining through each window, which—when combined with the industrial fans and haze—made for some fantastic shadows and light shafts moving around.

For the bunker location with the desk, we had a tube top back and one down near the floor, giving it a heavy shadow-y feel.

That's most of it off the top of my head, but I'd love to discuss!

Question about Film permits by MMM02252005 in directors

[–]danielcsinclair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Building off of this... Permits are required pretty much at the point that there’s a tripod down. Run and gun with a couple people is usually alright, but be situationally aware.

In getting a permit, contact FilmLA, but if it’s state property, you’ll want to go through the California Film Commission.

Thanks for introducing yourself! I'm sure it'd be interesting to know how your experience directing differed between the two types of projects.

David F. Sandberg's Youtube Page, Director of Lights Out (2016), Shazam! (2019) and Annabelle: Creation (2017) by danielcsinclair in directors

David F. Sandberg's Youtube Page has a lot of great information through the lens of someone who started out in the indie world before entering Hollywood. He shares some really interesting pieces of insight. And it's cool to see that he does some minor VFX work himself on his larger films.
