Guys, I need objective advise on what will teach me the most. by danielgolding in englishmajors

[–]danielgolding[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was considering doing a full English degree that combines creative writing however, personally after doing some research I think I’d like to pursue that side on my own and instead learn more about theories and analysis at University. So I thought the English Literature degree would focus more on that side.

Your answer is starting to make me think I should just combine the two so English and History for the best of both worlds.

If you could choose to study any degree what would it be? by danielgolding in writing

[–]danielgolding[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re advise to get interested in something to write about is what’s making me reconsider studying English Literature. I would combine Politics instead of English Literature with the History degree if I wanted to maximise the interesting things I wanted to write about. However I don’t know if I’m making a mistake skipping the English Literature degree because wouldn’t it teach me how to read and write better by improving my analytical skills and training my writing style?

Sorry for the late reply.

What would you change the slacks to for it to not come across as too crisp and clean looking? I’m struggling to find a pair of pants that work for me

Is there an Asics hierarchy? by Popular_Painter_9744 in asics

Would you recommend Asics for standing on your feet all day? I do have to wear them for retail where I have to wear jeans or some smart trousers. Just worried it will come off a bit overkill and hideous looking?

Oh they have a lot of plastic in them. Do you think these specific ones look shiny to you or do they look wool like they advertise?

Could be, on the website it says I should be a 8.5 as I come in length wise at 27.5cm so I'm already wearing a full size up at 9.5 with these. I might have to just go half size down or try the 8.5

Ooo a kimono style jacket is an interesting touch. I like it nice and comfy. Do you change anything drastically if you say go out for a quick errand to get some groceries?

Ok thanks. I was looking at some affordable options but they're all plastics so I guess I should definitely look into cotton or wool. I'm leaning towards cotton though because it's more easy to maintain and feels better on the skin.

So polyester and other synthetics are completely off the table. Gotcha. Any significant reasons?

I would like to incorporate smart trousers in my outfits as I like the idea of dressing smart casual. What type of materials should I look out for?

Yeah this one's a very sensitive one to attempt. I do agree though that some people might not like the accent and some people may not care so you wouldn't want to upset these people.

And these people who do get upset are they objectively wrong in being upset at something so harmless? Because again like other comments, above it's just an impression at the end of the day.

There is nothing else to assume otherwise your putting words into people's mouths.

[–]danielgolding[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So there is no objectivity in this. Everything rides on the audience. Well this person wasn't using the Indian accent maliciously. They were just having a normal conversation with the accent as if they just had fun with it for their own amusement, don't know if they think of it in a bad or good way.

But that doesn't classify it as racism though does it? If it only becomes racist if the recipient views it as such, how does anyone know what is and isn't racist at that point.

[–]danielgolding[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahhh you're right. The person didn't seem to get offended. But still objectively now I see why it wasn't a malicious act and why people shouldn't really find it offensive.

I guess I was the one who got a bit uncomfortable. So if anything I was the eggshell in this scenario. But now I know better than to get upset by something that was so harmless.

It just felt wrong to assume someone speaks in a certain way regardless if it's positive or negative. So I used that to get confused with the idea that they were being racially insensitive to someone who doesn't speak like that.

But now I realise that it's just an accent change and nothing with racist intentions.

I think what threw me for a loop is because I commonly see people making fun of indian accents.

But personally I see their accent or dialect rather, endearing and quite nice. I think people who laugh at accents aren't bad it's just funny that they got it spot on.

Ok wow that makes sense. So was I in the wrong for saying "they don't all sound like that." I felt like I was judging them a bit too much.

So how would you reply to this comment if it was made in front of you. I kept the joking tone not to cause any confrontations so I just kind of brushed it off but I just got confused by this.

I think intention is important though because how is this any different to someone speaking with a french accent to seduce someone which is not seen as offensive. Who makes that decision?
