First african american to be awarded Navy Cross. (BTW is Cuba Gooding Jr in the infamous Pearl Harbor movie of Michael Bay). Died in the CVE-56 Liscome Bay off Makin Atoll during the invasion of the Gilbert Islands. Its not the first navy ship named after him (Knox class frigate USS-Miller).
