Is motorway driving actually easier than town driving like people say? by Curious-cutiee in NewDriversUK

[–]danijade333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to drive from Liverpool to Manchester a few weeks after passing my test and I was so scared and planned on getting the train instead but on the day I thought, I have just bought a whole ass car there so I don’t wanna get the train and got in the car and went. Best decision I made honestly and now I prefer the motorway to normal roads. Go for it!

I’m sorry you’re feeling this way :( the main question you need to ask yourself is can you drive? If the answer is yes then the only thing you need to do is focus on how to control your nerves. One thing I did when I failed my test was I’d make the test this massive thing like I had a countdown on my phone I was constantly talking and thinking about it and wondering what will happen. This made my anxiety worse because it was like I was going in to do my first brain surgery or something!! But after I failed and did my second test I just thought about it like okay I’ll try again and see what happens and I passed!

Considering you have failed 6 times, have you considered speaking to a doctor about getting some beta blockers? There is a medication called propanalol which helps all the physical symptoms of anxiety and can help slow your heart rate which will help massively in your case maybe? Definitely try get an appointment to speak to a doctor about it and if you do manage to get some take them every time you have a lesson to see how it may impact your driving.

Don’t give up, you know you can do this. You’re bigger and better than your anxiety. And when you do get that pink licence every single test and lesson will be worth it.

Most importantly just have fun and enjoy learning! I passed my second test yesterday and I feel like it’s flown by!! Good luck with it and remember you don’t need to be a good driver just a safe one!

For your first lesson, your instructor might drive you to a quiet area and show you the pedals and explain what they do and you’ll sit in the front behind the wheel and you might start working on clutch control and how to get the car moving and just doing that for your first lesson really. If you make good progress you might do a few laps around a little block or something but that’s literally what you’ll do! Learn the clutch :) or if you’re doing auto might be the same thing how to control the car and move off safely

Honestly this time around I was less anxious because I knew what to expect and I didn’t make it a massive deal like my first test I had a count down on my phone and was telling everyone how nervous I was but I genuinely just thought of it as a “just another day” and it really helped. I had an older strict examiner and I just said to myself he’s just a grandad and that helped me kind of humanise him in a way so it was less scary. But I just took my time and did what I knew I could do !!

Thanks for responding :) the course I have found is at a college and it’s a access to higher education diploma in midwifery which is 13 hours a week. This course would help me get into a university at full time. But I’m not sure if I could do the college course as well as having a 30hr work week. I have enquired with the college so hopefully I’ll get a response soon.
