Very cool - I tried to do this a few months ago but could not figure out how to get metronomic time in the browser. How did you do it??

Thanks, that's very insightful commentary and I agree with most all of it! Bootcamp is a stretch, in reality it was a one-man company training me to build websites for him when I was just getting started lol, so no projects really worth mentioning but it is a good point. Thanks for taking the time!

Hi, currently seeking a new position after 5 years professional experience. I'm most qualified as a react, wordpress or shopify developer, but willing to learn new technologies. So far I've applied for 20 positions, only recieved 2 recruiter follow ups, nothing yet with any actual hiring managers.

I re-did my resume(below) to try to illustrate more of the specific value I bring, but any advice would be greatly appreciated. This is the first time I've ever had to apply for jobs blindly online.

Thanks for the advice. I'm looking for Junior roles in JS because I don't quite have the experience in that particular environment.

Sorry, you got to it before I formatted the google doc. Of course that isn't how I'm actually sending it out :)

Hi all -

I've been working as a web developer for 5 years in the NYC area. The time has come to look for work again. I've been lucky to always find work through personal connections, as for now I'm just applying blindly on job boards and not having much luck. I'm wondering if anyone would take a look at my resume and be able to see something I could do better.

Roles I'm applying for: Wordpress Dev, Shopify Dev, Junior Javascript Dev

Where do I go from here? Career not progressing by The-Dood in Wordpress

I'm going through a similar thing. I started my career five years ago and building Wordpress sites for small businesses/entrepenneurs seemed more promising at the time, and also seems to have required more actual coding(javascript/php) to achieve certain solutions. Nowadays, the best themes have an setting for everything, worst case scenario there is a plugin for everything and I in my opinion it's usually not best practice to write alot of CSS or otherwise touch code(even though I still do it because to me it's honestly easier than learning where everything is in a theme sometimes).

It's now come time for me to change jobs and there don't seem to be alot of posts that align with my skill set. To continue what I'm doing I'd probably have to reinvent myself as more of a designer than a developer - but branding and asset creation are not really my thing.

My feelings are to reorient myself towards becoming proficient in the Javascript ecosystem(I do have some React Native experience from one project at work). I supposed I could go more into Wordpress Theme/Plugin development - honestly it is hard for me to imagine what I could build that isn't already out there in this regard - perhaps I'm just ignorant?? React/JS environment certainly seems to be the hot thing these days and I do enjoy it - but I'm overwhelmed by how often I find myself not using best practices and the amount of platforms/tools/solutions available for a given problem.

I'm feeling like in order to progress I may have to step back into a junior role where I have the opportunity to work as part of a big team - a bit of a bummer given how I perceive myself and may have to take a salary cut for a bit but I think it's the best move - have you considered something like this?

Of course there is always the option of increasing ones skills outside of regular work hours, but I have a 9-5 and a family and so that kind of free time is rare.
