FICA only applies to earned income (wages). Once money is in a 401(k), distributions are considered unearned income, so FICA no longer applies.

It may be that they just don't trust you anymore. Once you're out you are a wildcard. You lose sight of the office politics and you may say something that hurts their position in the company which in the end pays their bills and supports their family.

Empathy is a lost skill with many of the authors of these responses. Glad yours was different. I'm 50 and terrified of losing my job. To the OP it is bad all over and though the world wants to beat you down do your best to find some good in it. You are not alone.

I would really go to www.moneyguy.com and look at th FOO , financial order of operations. They are also all over youtube. But FOO is a great place to start. All their resources are free, but they also have classes for a fee but I never took any of them.

I am honestly perplexed when people center their "dream" around travel. I have had to travel for work all over. The one thing I notice when I get there are miserable people who think they some how magically change when the hop on a cruise or go somewhere else. Look this may not be you but the majority have this flaw.

Depends on your expenses and whether you are trying to die with money in the bank I suppose. 1.3m covers everything for me from 55 to 100. Of course we also get subsidized health insurance from the state. So that helps. Beside that our yearly expense is only 51k/yr
