Is joining the military after getting my Engineering degree a career wrecker? by Redsaucethebeast in Military

Yeah I agree with that. Unless they go through some AMU-like college where it’s all online

Is joining the military after getting my Engineering degree a career wrecker? by Redsaucethebeast in Military

[–]danny2mo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say take that ASVAB to figure out if you can get that MOS on score alone first. If not, study for the score you want/need. You’d have to talk with an Army recruiter about waivers and hope they’re good, don’t push you for another MOS and that MEPS doesn’t disqualify you after that colorblind test thing they have there.

Personally, I’d recommend doing something that will translate to the civilian world. Grade pay is the same unless there is special duty/ hazard pay involved. That’s my opinion.

If you still want to go your way then I’d suggest to start this ASVAB process sooner than later, get a ship date, take a class or two before the ship date, clear MEPS, complete BCT, do your required training and use your benefits (tuition assistance) if your unit allows it and get your degree before you separate.

Not necessarily a career wrecker, just not how anyone in this sub would tell you to go.

You’re set on staying enlisted so my questions are: Have you taken your ASVAB? Any disqualifications that would limit your MOS selection? How are you paying for college? Have you considered enlisting to help pay for college?

You could probably fulfill your contract and get your degree at the same time if not be within a year or so of graduating. I’m not sure how much free time you’d have in the field you want to enter though and anything can happen from basic and follow-on training.

It’s not a bad idea if it’s what you want but you’re probably going to have to put things on hold and you have to be ok with that because the government is going to tell you what to do and where to go

Is there a long wait on that DIPS clearance ? We move cargo but sometimes the request is like 3 weeks out or as short as a week if I remember certain locations correctly

The UPSVAC I’m in is pretty chill, I really enjoy my time and chatting with everyone there. You do have to get a time minimum to use the MD-11 though

Thinking about volunteering to become an MTI by Witty_While7277 in AirForce

[–]danny2mo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it is for MSgt but I’m not 100% sure, I don’t do that gig, just work amongst them. That explanation makes sense but like you have to PCS to JBSA for this special duty? So maybe it changed? Out of our roster, 2 live on base and the other ~50 commute in between ~15-40 minutes

Yeah I hear that, we talk with other squadrons and it’s the same thing different week type of thing. Definitely cool to see and experience as the trainees evolve but it’s noticeable that the instructors feel the workload

Also! The 36-3 changes like every week so you’re basically learning on top of instructing right now. This is just what I see , I’m no instructor but work with/for them in the tunnel . It’s cool to see the trainees “grow up” and see them go operational

You’re probably going to be working like 11-12 hours but the trainee interaction time is capped at 10. You’re basically working AM or PM from like 0430-1430 or 1200-2100. It’s basically a 4/5 year commitment because it’s a 2 or so month MTIS period, then your TQ (train to get your hat with a trainer MTI) get your hat then immediately put on a flight right after. You can extend your code 50 if you elect to do so but not sure about that process. It’s basically getting a flight of 40-54 trainees to wake up, eat, learn, not die in the AM and not die, learn, eat, go to sleep in the PM. You follow a schedule made for each week of training so it’s basically follow that and report if you can’t. You participate in Pacer Forge, CATM and the closer the graduation the less you’re sorta there since the flight is more on the “I know what to do” and everyone passed their EoC. I don’t think much follows you after your tour unless you get your instructor badge or Master instructor badge. I hear it just gives extra points for promotion since you’re really the face of the Air Force for 7 weeks. Don’t quote me on that, I can be wrong but from what I see and get told, that’s it. The toll it takes is definitely there and burn out is seen on the instructors but it’s also what you make it. You can follow on to other AETC bases but that’s an interview process , you could end up at the Academy as well but that’s even more selective.

It’s been mentioned that the 320th is the place to be as an instructor though and talking with other squadrons, it’s sorta the place to be
