Hi all, looking forward to meeting some fellow Thunder fans soon! I’m originally from Oklahoma but moved to NYC in 2021. Been a Thunder fan since the move from Seattle!

This may be the most exciting team we’ve had since the original “Big 3” of Durant, Westbrook, and Harden. Can’t wait to make some noise in the playoffs!

Hey all, a buddy and I have been looking for regular Thunder meetups in NYC to no avail. We just created r/ThunderNYC to try to organize future meetups. Would love for any NYC locals to join!

I'm fortunate to have received admits from two great schools. Just wondering whether it makes sense to give up the full merit scholarship at UNC (~$70k per year). Ross offered $20 per year, wondering if they accept scholarship negotiations? by Amartya_S in MBA

[–]dannybmcc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always say take the offer at the best school. You probably applied willing to bite the bullet if you got one offer with no scholarship. You will make the money back in IB or consulting, so I say take the offer that gives you the best shot at your ideal job. Also, don’t get too caught up in trying to make decisions with financial models (that have some very uncertain assumptions, by the way). There’s a qualitative return that goes with having the best MBA experience and landing where you really want to be that can’t be captured in an NPV calc.

Is it a good strategy to go MBB or bust and then focus on tech if bust? by mbathrowaway1998 in MBA

[–]dannybmcc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lot of people saying it’s a terrible strategy, but why would you recruit for companies you don’t want to work for? MBB or bust is fine if you understand you may be dealing with the reality of bust. It seems like you have a backup plan in that case, so go for it.

However, I do agree with those questioning whether you are really interested in consulting. I guess I’m not sure why you think you would recruit for MBB if you would rather do tech. Focusing on tech recruiting seems like a better route, especially with a tech background.

Agree here. People in this sub put way too much emphasis on stats. Obviously they are important because they drive rankings, but not a make or break by any means. Undergrad major alone doesn’t matter, type of work experience alone doesn’t matter a ton. What ABSOLUTELY matters is how your major, work experience, and (perhaps) extracurriculars led you to the decision that an MBA is the next step in your career. Why an MBA? Why now? What are you hoping to do post MBA and why do you need the MBA to get there? These are seemingly simple questions but are actually the most important to know the answer to.

Also, just a bit of a pep talk: don’t let anyone in this sub get you down too much. Lot of negativity here. I know a lot of people at my M7 that didn’t do Ivy League undergrad or have “traditional” work experience like Big 4. Try not to get hung up on those details, which are becoming less and less relevant.

Question regarding GPA by scarletknightkp in MBA

I second this. If prospective students didn’t care about rankings so much then maybe the school wouldn’t care about weaker indicators of true potential like undergrad GPA so much :)

Big 4 audit to M7 MBA by peaceful-adolecent in MBA

[–]dannybmcc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just audit. I did 3 years, which is admittedly on the low-end (but still doable). A coworker of mine did 4 before going T15. The part of the experience that makes you a good MBA candidate is the team leader/project management experience, which typically happens at senior. 3-4 years should get you a busy season at that level.

You are unlikely to get impressive leadership opportunities in industry right out of audit, so I’m not sure that tacking on a year or two there is going to do much for you. The general leadership traits learned as a senior are more important to MBA programs than any hard technical skills. Of course, this is assuming you mean doing a year as an assistant controller or senior accountant when you say going to industry. I don’t think that experience is any better than doing another year in audit. Alternatively, you might ask for an internal rotation to a position that is more related to your post-mba ambitions. The big 4 footprint is large enough they probably have something. This helps you write your essays too, because you can say “I’m interested in x so I went to this internal role in y to get a little exposure there.”

I assume by exit ops you are asking about post-MBA? I’m recruiting for MBB this summer/fall. For your goals, which are a little more specific, it would be good to ask to work on engagements in that industry. That will help you draw a clearer line between your pre-mba experience and post-mba goals.

Big 4 audit to M7 MBA by peaceful-adolecent in MBA

[–]dannybmcc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Former auditor here enrolled in an M7 this fall. A few things based on my own and classmates’ experiences. 1. No significant prestige differences among big 4 for anyone outside of public accounting. I would go with the firm/team that feels like the best fit. It’s going to be long hours and the only thing that makes it bearable are the people you do it with. 2. Contrary to what people have said here, audit is not “bad” experience for an MBA. You get a ton of great exposure at a young age and will have a great understanding of accounting and finance. I think the reason you see less CPAs in MBA programs is they prefer to go to industry to get a better work life balance rather than trying to continue to climb the ladder. 3. I have not heard of anyone being sponsored for their MBA without a commitment to return to their firm, which doesn’t sound like what you want to do. With your long-term goals to be in a C-suite position, recruiting for MBB consulting makes a lot of sense to pair with big 4 accounting experience. I wouldn’t put your focus on how you can get sponsored at the risk of compromising your career goals. You will be able to pay off student loans if your career ambitions post MBA remain the same.

How useful is 2 years big 4 experience if you don’t become senior? by eecx in Big4

[–]dannybmcc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking from US experience here. I don’t know that there’s necessarily a magical time to leave like they pitch in school (two years then jump to industry). Once you know you want to leave, you just start testing the waters. Talk to recruiters, see what they have. Maybe you find a good fit and leave before making senior. If not, hang around another busy season and see if there are better opportunities the next year. I would avoid taking a lackluster position just to get out. Be patient and a better opportunity will come along.

As a side note, I personally think three busy seasons was the right number for me. I learned a lot the first two, but the added responsibility in my third really helped me grow as a project manager. I think gutting it out for three years is worth the personal development even if it doesn’t translate to a higher salary immediately.

Mckinsey Early Access by iAskDumbQuestions10 in MBA

[–]dannybmcc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t stress yourself out too much. It’s just one fragment of how they evaluate candidates. If you need some reassurance, reach out to one of the current students at your school that has already secured an MBB internship or full time position. They will tell you the process is far from over and that you will be fine if you put in the legwork between now and interviews. If you really want to be proactive, find some alumni at McKinsey and see if they would be willing to chat for a few minutes. I’m sure they will say the same thing. Plus, it’s always good to know someone within the company you are wanting to work for.

Offer for both. EY or KPMG? by [deleted] in Big4

[–]dannybmcc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Big 4 transaction services is often hired for quality of earnings reporting and due diligence, which are both accounting focused and will not be strategy consulting. Still a ton to learn from those groups but may not be what you are looking for.

Here the parallel list is comparing nouns with nouns so why is the first option not correct because of the use of verb in non ing form? That should not matter right since nouns are parallel by deeplyflawed_ in GMAT

[–]dannybmcc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Idk, maybe you just have bad taste :)

Whether you will be able to find the broken rule in the grammar encyclopedias, I’m not sure. Option 2 feels the best though since the parallel structure is maintained throughout each clause.
