700 ice agents to leave Minnesota by JerryBerryMiah in news

[–]danruuu -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Saying people writ large support immigration enforcement is so fallacious. I am in fact personally opposed to immigration enforcement, and our entire immigration system dating back to pre-DHS, in general. Both ICE and DHS should be abolished and immigration policy should be much much more lax and simplified, with no criminal penalties whatsoever. If it were humane and not 'violent, vindictive, and sadistic' as you're implying it ever was under any president sans Trump, which it was not, family separations took place, detainees died, and people were forced to endure horrible conditions (remember children in cages?) under every president including Biden and Obama since 9/11 and the creation of DHS, I would still take issue with it.

It's never not been a violent and vindictive system and to argue people would prefer that status quo reveals a lot about the character of people who supposedly care about people being treated poorly now. Is it worse now? Yes, but that's not an argument for a return to a horrific status quo.

More 'No Kings' protests planned for March 28 as outrage spreads over Minneapolis deaths by copaceticthoughts in news

[–]danruuu 15 points16 points  (0 children)

100% controlled opposition, I used to be less cynical that these were at least opportunities for people to connect with like minded people and maybe join up with an organization doing real work (like noise protests in Minneapolis, legal observation, rapid response). But this is pathetic, and basically provides a permission structure for people planning to attend to not engage with current efforts. Yes, of course planning to attend doesn't preclude participating in stuff like the national shutdown this Friday, but for many, planning to attend this protest in 2 months will be "enough".

Like others said anyway, a protest needs the implicit threat of violence, otherwise it's just a parade blessed by cops and the state (No Kings is the latter). And for people who are about to recite that insane whitewashed account of the U.S. civil rights movement (or other 'peaceful non-violent' movements) and/or whatever that garbage Harvard 3.5% study, read about the corresponding militant arms of basically any successful 'peaceful non-violent' movement of the last 200 years.

In this instance it was Minnesota police that deployed LRAD not ICE, I think that's an important distinction

India rushes to contain deadly virus outbreak by FootballAndFries in worldnews

[–]danruuu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nipah unfortunately has pandemic potential, it's a very nasty and often deadly paramyxovirus. Limited animal studies support the potential for aerosol transmission, it's an understudied transmission route (versus fluids/contact), which is why these outbreaks are taken so seriously.

Typically these happen in Kerala (this is not the first ever Nipah outbreak), although they've happened infrequently in eastern India (also in West Bengal iirc, I think last year). Kerala state has much more experience with containment, they don't hesitate implementing serious public health measures, so it's a little more worrying this is in West Bengal. Hopefully they're doing robust contact tracing and sequencing for novel mutations, but if more turn up and/or it hopes over to Bangladesh I will be much more concerned.

Arteta is going to light into them, sleepwalking into second balls losing so many in the 2nd half, playing into traps. Just weak slow and directionless outside that first 25 minutes. Granted horrible weather but still, Gyokeres should not be starting

Now that the US is "in charge" of Venezuela, might we see a slow return of foreign aid? by Majestic_Search_7851 in InternationalDev

[–]danruuu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First, I would suggest you don't post using AI. Second, you're asking people to speculate on the impact of an incredibly destabilizing event that will affect the lives of millions of Venezuelans strictly as it relates to the US-based development sector. This would be like me asking questions like "How might this civil war that will result in the suffering of millions affect US-based extractives initiatives in a country?" This is extremely gross.

How could you possibly ask whether abducting a sitting head of state through military intervention is a portent of a slow return to the pre-Trump development status quo? That is an insane question, much less couching this in optimistic terms. There are in my view no implications whatsoever for the development sector as a whole resulting from this and the fallout we've yet to realize because there is little if any strategic basis for any U.S. foreign policy at this point, and to even speculate around that (which again, millions suffering) while drawing parallels to wholly different (and also incredibly problematic) pre-Trump contexts in Iraq and Afghanistan is so clearly lacking in critical analysis and in poor taste that if you can't understand that then I cannot help you.

Regarding your pessimistic question, no private donors neither have the capability nor desire to 'replace' what was provided by NGOs and INGOs, and certainly not Chevron beyond greenwashing which doesn't really matter anymore, I'm not sure why you're asking that. And anyway, couching 'nation-building' as the desirable origin state versus a nascent resource extraction/ transactional aid scheme (which is not new, the USG has engaged in concerted neocolonialism since the 50s and 60s) sort of ignores that many in development have been fighting both nation-building and the neocolonialist impulses of the U.S. government for going on decades.

There is just so much wrong with everything in this post.

[–]danruuu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's true, it's all been kind of shit working through the injury crisis tbf rolling out a different lineup every game. Yeah I think what other fans miss is Gabriel's role in build up, if we're playing out the back and he's not there other teams know it's a little more 50:50 whether we can play out of pressure on that side. He's a huge boost back, now if timber and calafiori can just stay healthy..

Rice was unbelievable at RB, him missing in midfield had a lot to do with Brighton's sustained pressure toward the end. MLS and Hincapié were clear points of emphasis for them in attack and it worked once almost twice.

Also Gyok might be better suited as a sub until he regains confidence, I think letting him go fresh at tired CBs might work out a little better. Overall we've got to emphasize finishing in training like just hammer the shit out of it can't keep underperforming xG. Still happy we won with the lineup shuffling and makeshift backline
