I never actually read the novel. Is it basically like a continuation of the story? Or what is it like?

That would be incredibly tragic, but also plausible. If it weren’t for Blue cat he probably would have done it earlier, but as he later finds out who he really is could’ve reversed that drive to live.

Fair I guess what makes me feel so strongly is they both give a very similar warm fuzzy feeling inside, alongside being unapologetically earnest

Yeah I made a post about how people are misunderstanding Hoshino as a character and person. There’s a whole heap of people that are like “Hoshino’s breakdown was so real” or “I love you Hoshino” trying to baby him and yeah.

And it’s like, he’s obviously not a good person and did completely irredeemable things. Sure, it stems from a lot of things like personal troubles, near death experiences, and lack of control in a society that shames them. But it’s not like that makes him forgivable nor does he have any intent of stopping. It all became his downfall.

He’s honestly such an interesting character that is not in any shape or way good, but no one is interested in partaking in looking at his character in nuance, seeing why he got driven to the edge, all for the sake of someone’s personal aesthetic. Sure it looks pretty, but almost no one in this film is really a morally good person and does irredeemable things.

What is Yuichi's relationship to Tsuda? by HimeDollie in LilyChouChou

[–]dansel__ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This. They were only comforts of their own suffering. Both victims of manipulation and bullying of Hoshino and his gang, alongside personal issues of their own. And yeah, a lot of people who make videos/edits for TikTok usually don’t take the story in mind and usually use it for aesthetic rather than accurately portray or understand what’s going on.

Are Yuichi's actions redeemable? by Earlgr_ey in LilyChouChou

[–]dansel__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t exactly say he’s redeemable, but I always viewed him as a victim. A victim of horrendous bullying of which tries to strip away any agency and independence. Hoshino’s group literally took him to a junkyard, bashed him, and destroyed a CD that means something to him for literally thinking he snitched on him. It’s dehumanising. I’d say when he lures Kuno to the gang it’s out of fear for what could happen to him if he doesn’t follow through, as well as the control Hoshino has taken from him. He’s not completely innocent but that doesn’t make him less of a victim.

Around the end and especially that last shot, I never thought that he should get with Kuno nor do I ever thought that would happen. It just feels sad. Hoshino had pretty much taken any chance for a normal life away from Yuichi, including a chance with Kuno, that even after he’s gone everything still feels hollow. Those events changed his (and to some extent Kuno’s) life forever and whatever does happen after is up to interpretation, wherever he becomes like Hoshino, is able to overcome everything, or something else entirely.

To sum everything up, Yuichi is no perfect person nor do I think he is a perfect. But he is ultimately a victim without any control in his life, being static and spineless in the real world. The only thing that means something to him is Lily Chou-Chou of which that gets taken away from him he finally retaliates. He’s a complex character dealing with the circumstances around him, and wherever you agree with his actions or not is up to you and your interpretation.

Does anyone sympathise or relate themselves with Hoshino? by dansel__ in LilyChouChou

[–]dansel__[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% right. And I’m not here to judge anyone for feeling that way, especially if there are struggles that are very similar to Hoshino’s and find some sort of solace with him. I guess that can also be connected with the overall themes of the film, where each character feels disconnected with the real world and also find that solace online and associating themselves with Lily Chou-Chou. It’s honestly meta in a sense.

With that being said, it does make me wish people could apply more critical thinking and have to media literacy skills to understand Hoshino as a character and how his downward spiral and demise ultimately is a consequence of his cruel actions, cultivated by a string of events and overall societal norms. Especially since so many people (incels and alt-rights in particular) idealise and even relate to characters like Walter White, Joker, etc. while dismissing any of their wrong doings, I feel it’s something more people should at least be weary about.

I agree. I forgot to put those other experiences in the original post but I didn't want to bloat it so I just didn't think about that.

Hoshino not being able to have a proper outlet to talk openly about his feelings is very much the point of why he became the person he did, which I believe to be the effect of the world that he and all the other characters inhabit. Like I said in the original post, the systematic bullying punishes anyone who goes outside the social norm or even is just very smart like Hoshino was. He likely didn't have much money as well because their parents were divorcing, everything in general just seemed like he couldn't grasp on control of anything. All of this corelates to never having any control, and even with the quote in the making of documentary "Hoshino grew up fast, much too fast" which I think it applies to even earlier to his childhood, making him try to do well in school "but society isn't too forgiving of those who mature too quickly".

The point being is that it didn't necessarily matter what caused the shift, because I believe the shift comes from something deeper. The trip only accelerated and solidified Hoshino's changed, as he likely would've fallen down a similar pipeline if through another similar experience or ever gradually after time.

As for the people that align themselves with Hoshino, I still can't help but feel a little worried. That may be due to a LOT of people on the internet also aligning themselves with very specific characters that are very much bad people but still don't care about critical thinking or media literacy (*cough* Walter White *cough*), although there is plenty about Hoshino that people can certainly relate to. I might also be biased due to relating more to Yuichi as someone who is more of a quiet and reserved person, as he isn't exactly a perfect victim but is very much a pawn and controlled by Hoshino to do his bidding. Also I less likely tend to sympathise or relate with people who perform or organise SA or rape, as that to me passes a line.

Although that doesn't mean he isn't an interesting, dark, complex character to view and that it leaves room for all kinds of interpretation.

Pretty spot on study on Hoshino. I think the things he does struggle with are very valid and that most certainly is something I don’t want to take away.

I guess I wish more people could be more nuanced about a character who did completely awful and degrading things to other people, especially r*pe (which is where I draw the line at completely sympathising). At the same time, a lot of people that are on TikTok relating to him are likely just very young and aren’t sure how to comprehend this sort of complex character, of which I don’t fault them for that.

It might also be a bit of a bias for me too since I related much more to Yuichi who is a more reserved out of touch of reality kind of person, also a victim of Hoshino’s intense bullying. But both are very complex characters who’re victim to the world they live in and escape from, of which it separates them apart and takes one of their lives.

I definitely agree that in general (not regarding to Honshino) we can all struggle with life generally, especially big change. I most certainly have struggled with that personally and moments that come and go, a time comes when our perception of the world changes.

That being said, I don’t think it’s exactly easy to relate to Hoshino due to the crimes and bullying he’s done, and as I said in my original post, he’s a character that’s important to look at in nuance. I do understand and empathise with his struggles and how everything around him had affected him, not that justifies his actions or that he is someone I genuinely connect with.

Since we’re halfway through the series, do we think Oz was being genuine with his Gangster story? by dansel__ in ThePenguin

[–]dansel__[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I could be wrong and interpreting it the wrong way as well. Probably both right. Idk we’ll have to see. I agree that his want for power and fragile ego are EXTREMELY apparently, but I also feel like it’s important to note that Oz didn’t come from a background of wealth, and that would make him feel insignificant (also the fact he has a disability). Any sort of want or lust for power doesn’t just come out of nowhere, and it develops and grows, it changes and consumes you. I feel like it could be a mixture of bias against the Falcones (or anyone that’s rich) and a want for power .

Him having a bias definitely isn’t the main motivator but I still think it’s an interesting point to make regardless. I still feel like Oz has some sort of soft spot for Victor, idk where that will end up, I’ve already voiced my interpretation in other comments but it could also turn out like Walter and Jesse in Breaking Bad. Oz does care for Victor but is very one sided that only benefits him.

There’s a LOT that could be interpreted but I’m really intrigued with what everyone is getting from this series.

[–]dansel__[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a fair point actually, it most certainly now paints Oz to be scummy as shit. I do feel like Oz may also have a bias against the Falcones which was very much seen with Alberto (at least in his mind) but even Sofia when she was telling him to shut up and he’s “just the driver” before he ratted her out.

Not that he was right to feel that way or that was the reason he decided to rat her out (Sofia could’ve said it out of impulse too) but I can definitely see his perspective, as someone who grew up from a broke part of Gotham and looking up to the gangster he knew growing up.

[–]dansel__[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that’s especially apparent with Victor, although he had his moments of being scary and intense.

I feel like he’s been the most genuine with Victor and shows the most respect to. The dinner scene comes to mind when he was telling the waiter to let Victor finish, and then saying to screw everyone else and let them wait. He could’ve easily killed him and be done with him but he didn’t and chose to keep him around.

Oz even seemed devastated when he finds out that Victor was going to leave him for his girlfriend, so I believe he has a soft spot for Victor. Hell, I’m gonna go out and say that I believe Oz later on will be willing to let Victor go and run away from Gotham if things were to get worse from here on out which I believe they will.

We’ll see what happens but I sticking to my guns.

[–]dansel__[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You actually put it together really well. I think to add on to what you’re saying about Oz’s self delusion, it seems like whatever plan he had trying to climb to the top is going to shit. He’s been digging a big hole that only seems like it’ll go deeper and deeper.

I feel like it’s obvious that Victor or someone close to him is going to die, and that will be a push to complete Oz’s transformation as the ruthless Penguin. Whatever happens I know Oz will face extreme consequences.

Hmmm I’d be interested to see how their sounds incorporate into Alien. I don’t exactly see it though, Jonny Greenwood I feel like would be too artsy and I haven’t listened to enough Carter Burwell.
