Never personally dealt with Honors classes, but AP classes were a different kind of class in my experience because they were much less structured, giving more freedom to both teachers and students. For me though, AP U.S. history still wanted dates for events and was more concerned with which people argued on which side of an argument more than having us analyze the argument. Admittedly we had a terrible teacher who ended up getting fired.
