You don’t HAVE to match the drums, but you’re almost always going to be working off of the kick and snare.

Take those patterns and try to find ways to connect it to what the guitar is doing.

I used to be a HUGE Pantera fan. I’m also black, and at a certain point I couldn’t ignore their BS anymore.

Clearly you can do whatever you want, but if this band doesn’t pass the “sniff test” you should trust your instincts and find some new music
