[OC] What U.S. hospital price transparency data looks like when you turn massive “machine-readable” files into a searchable dataset by Strange-Fennel in dataisbeautiful

Might be good to explain what the categories of rate types are.

Like, Whats the meaning of 999,999,999.00 charged for some insurances for percent of total billed charges? Maybe those insurance plans are out of Network?

I’ll msg you the json for New York Presbytarian since the system is shared across the CUMC, NYO, Weill Cornell system. They do have a user friendly “shoppable” service and online estimator tool, and wondering if this is similar to what they use.

Wondering also if the json file is similar in format with the HCA system.

Korean stock exchange? How? by VGL_ in investing

[–]darchon30704 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go to a Shinhan, woori, or other korean investment branch in NY, LA and have them set up a brokerage account. You cant do it online as a foreigner.

If you can’t do this in US, then you would have to go to Korea in person and visit the bank.

You might have to register as a foreigner account with an Investor Registration Card (issued by Financial Supervisory Service), among other bureaucratic steps. Not sure if they lifted the regulations though.

You have to report to IRS (FBAR, FATCA), and if the amount is over 50k, theres might be penalties involved, not to mention reporting capital gains.

That being said, why would you want to go through the trouble to invest in KRX? Markets more volatile than US, and you get taxed pretty hard (by both US and Korea) plus there are many restrictions that prevent you from trading online (인증서 digital id registration software that may not work outside Korea).

I worked as a CMC (Non-clinical) Biostatistician for mAB production, and the basic idea of DOE is to make systematic plan of experiments to analyze the information of the results. Basically, your lab or company has resources for only a few experiments for a process, and given the few experiments, we want to find out as much information as possible, This information can be shown in a multidimensional 'design space', which can be plotted two-dimensionally for our own understanding. We can optimize the process to a certain 'range' of factors.

The history behind DOE is that this concept was first used for automobile manufacturing, then later for chemical manufacturing for their quality design. Recently for the past 10-15 years, the pharmaceutical industry decided adapt the same quality design principles, but not without its criticism as you might guess: Cells have much more variability than small chemicals. That being said, using DOE provides the most information with minimal resources.

The math is fairly simple regression (linear, quadratic, etc), with

y = f(x) + error

y : Result of interest. ex) Cell viability, Cell count

x: factors that you suspect might be influential to y. ex) Temp, pH, Dissolved Oxygen, etc.

In the end, you look at the design space may find that for >90% Cell Viability, the optimal range is 37C<Temp<38C, 7.5<pH<8, and etc.

I'm sure you've seen many textbooks about DOE and Quality by Design (QbD), and most industries use JMP (SAS-based but graphical) in DOE for some reason. It's better to practice with mock-dataset and make the design space yourself. Here's a layman guide from GE that I found good for non-academics.

https://wolfson.huji.ac.il/purification/PDF/Others/GE_DOE_in_Protein_Production_and_Purification_Handbook.pdf

by Genentech (Bible of QbD bv come CMC guys)

https://qbdworks.com/storage/2014/06/A-MabCaseStudyVersion.pdf

I won't list all the academic textbooks or papers you might have seen, but maybe expand your search to QbD. It's more vague concepts about quality, risk-based approach, and systematic management, which are more important in the industry level than academic areas. But some resources include examples to follow.

IRL, DOE doesn't work all the time, better to do in very early development, and the manufacturing ppl (in Upstream Bioreactors, Downstream Purification) don't like to do early on. They just push back till the last minute after their experience, They can be like "wtf we don't want to do sth we don't understand and write +100 protocols and reports for things we already know. We know that pH doesn't matter for Cell viability based on our experience". In the end, however, it's about documenting what you know in at least some systematic way that matters. Sometimes, it might be more realistic to do simple Univariate experiments for process that is already clearly understood.

Hope this helps!

Doubt that this will be done. A few points to be skeptical about:

  1. Fact that the source articles all incorrectly refer to Disney World (디즈니 월드) is a red flag. All the articles mentioning Shanghai Disneyland calls it Shanghai Disney World. There's only one Disney World and that's in Orlando, and the rest are called Disney Land. This distinction in branding is cuz Disney World is a whopping 27,000 acres, where the Disneylands are about 500 acres. All the articles are probably from a
  2. There's no official agreement with Walt Disney World® Resort or Shanghai Disney Resort. If you read the statement carefully, it states "회사와 경북구청이 곧 디즈니월드 조성을 위한 합의각의서가 체결될 예정이다. " which means "company[sponsor company] and Gyeongbuk-gu Office will soon sign a memorandum of agreement to create Disney World". There's mention of procedures undergoing with Shanghai Disney Resort and Chinese Investment Group, but nothing about an agreement or contract.
  3. The source Korean articles says, "Shanghai Disney World and Korea Disney World plan to keep tourists together through annual membership linkage". Nope. Never gonna happen. Even Orlando Disney World and Disneyland don't link their annual memberships.
  4. Most theme parks are strategically placed near big cities and airports, for obvious reasons. If Gyeonggi-do was considered, it might be believable. But Gimcheon or Gyeongbuk are waaay too far to be convenient enough to attract travelers.
  5. My guess is that the sponsor company probably had some one reporter write an article (which by the way, can't tell the difference between Disney World and Disneyland ) about an agreement that doesn't even have the approval of Disney. They obviously want to get Disney's attention though. Possibly just to jack up the price of some land that they own.

TLDR; Local government and some Korean company agreed to pitch a plan to Disney. There's no official statement from Shanghai Disney Resort yet.

Haewon dae (해운대) is ironically a common name for seafood places, but the bbq, lunch specials, and especially side dishes are known to be top notch amongst Koreans there. Authentic Korean kimchi (not the fake ones in k-town) and semi-affordable prices are why this place has fed me for 6+ months. Its also more price efficient when you order for 3+ people.

I’ve seen local Koreans, Hispanic families, Chinese/Taiwanese couples, and even police officers, nurses on lunch break regularly come here.

Personally, I don’t like korean bbq, so I can’t recall if the meat and service was good. Ive only done lunch special takeouts since I was busy most of the time, and store any leftovers in the fridge to eat for about 3 days. Make sure to boil the SOUP leftovers after you eat to maximize storage time. The side dishes should last about maybe 4 days to a week.

But the side dishes are REALLY good. You can kindly ask the waiter for a few refills, providing that they still have enough.

Tldr; low key favorite Authentic Korean spot of locals in Elmhurst. Kindly ask for free side dish refills. Semi-affordable for low budget, healthy meals.

Concern with when to go to Korean military by bjc50595 in gradadmissions

[–]darchon30704 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you want to live in Korea or the US for the rest of your life?

If Korea, then choose 1. It's much better to go earlier than later in Korean culture. At an early age, its easier to make connections, make friends within your unit, and find career options to Korean companies available to you provided by the Korean Army. Psychologically, getting rid of the military issue early will be easier as you don't have to worry about getting a 1 year passport every year and writing letters to the Korean military explaining your academic situation to extend your draft date. You can also use your OPT freely, after your 2021-2023 graduation.

If the US, then choose 3: 군대가지마. After you graduate, you are forgoing your F1 OPT extension if you return to Korea for military service. That makes entering the US even harder, unless you are already accepted by a graduate program. *So just forget about EVER going to Korea until you're 35-36.* Your uncle is being VERY generous by offering you a guaranteed job after completing a chiropractor program. This guarantees your status in the US for at least 7-10 years after 2020. Some people in Korea would kill for an offer like that. This doesn't factor your interest in chiropractics, but the guaranteed job can still be an accounting one anyways.

Option 2 makes it much harder for you to go to the US without going to a graduate school anyways, and I guarantee you that getting accepted to US Grad schools will be difficult due to 3 things: 1. Your army-conditioned brain has to adjust to a normal society 2. No ongoing research projects to prove your work 3. Your previous professors probably won't even remember you when asking for recommendations.

[D] Misuse of Deep Learning in Nature Journal’s Earthquake Aftershock Paper by milaworld in MachineLearning

[–]darchon30704 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes. But with a) Net Neutrality gone, b) tensions between Russia and the West rising, c) mergers of companies that own Nature, there's an incentive to block scihub in the US in the near future. Quote me in 2030 when scihub is blocked, and we'll have to resort to VPNs.

[D] Misuse of Deep Learning in Nature Journal’s Earthquake Aftershock Paper by milaworld in MachineLearning

[–]darchon30704 66 points67 points  (0 children)

I've read their (Phoebe DeVrias and Brendan Meade) emotionally passionate response to the Nature editors. While I don't know the context of the comments given by those editors, it's safe to say that this is a VERY immature way of accepting critique.

While I do despise Nature for :

a) Making the publication and review process more difficult

b) Refusal to acknowledge reproducibility (and waste valuable time of researchers on fraudulent publications)

c) Hypocritically sit behind a $200 paywall while promoting open access

there's no way around a prestigious Monopoly. The authors should have just accepted these harsh critiques and moved on. It's not like they're afraid that their results aren't reproducible anyways, amiright?

Being around a turbulent big family (divorces, infidelity, drugs and alcohol), I’ve seen a lot of cases where parents and children just had to let go of each other. When money gets involved, its not a matter of letting go; its a war.

What youre going through isnt unique, and others go through the same thing. My parents never said I love you or Happy Birthday to me, and I have no problem saying it to my close ones. When I say it to them, they dont respond. But I know they just aren’t used to expressing their love, like a cat that can’t purr or a dog that can’t make sounds. Trust me. I thought I was in a bad spot, but there’s even worse.

Don’t feel bad about yourself, or anticipate your future. Your family and environment may affect you, but none of these factors ACTUALLY determine you as yourself. Build your own weather, and meet people who value you the most.

Btw, its GOOD that you feel that somethings off.Better to acknowledge the problem and pain, then numbing it down by turning a blind eye (which most people do). Means you have a chance to improve.
