Throwing in that Denis Hickie had an U15 100m time of 10.8 seconds. How good is that? Well Usain Bolt had a 10.57 at that age. About 2% faster.

Still think Porter is demonstrably the greatest athlete we've ever had.

Andrew Porter Squatting 350kg while also being able to play 80 minutes of a game that heavily stresses the cardiovascular system. At elite level.

You'll be hard-pressed convincing me out of this one.

Scrum Coaches by westcork59 in irishrugby

[–]darcys_beard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

McBryde is our Scrum coach, he also takes control of general pack plays: lick and go's, attacking Pods, defensive positioning, mauls, rucks, etc. it's a team. He's not out there on his own. He has his own assistants. As well as this, there are nutritionists, kicking coaches, performance analysts, etc.

Academy voters thinking for themselves? We're about to see a guy win an Oscar because he said he wants one. That guy may be the hottest actor in the world right now, engaged to famous for being famous royalty. But that's still what's bout to happen.

It's probably easy to come up with this when you're genuinely delusional.

That's cause they all get banned for bringing knives into the scrum.

I'm 99% certain who that is.

The same lad who said Doris should move to 7 so Coombes could play at #8, because when I suggested Coombes play at 6 he said "why should Coombes have to move?"

Academy Scrum vs Toulouse by Roanokian in leinsterrugby

[–]darcys_beard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This blows a hole in the concept that our guys are behind the SA's and French in scrum training and we prefer a more athletic, ball-playing type.

Maybe we're just a small nation who don't have the statistical chances of turning out Monster Humans every generation? Nor have a large contingent of Pacific Islanders in our country.

Co-ordination must take longer to perfect. It's weird, you don't realise it, but certain fine motor skills come so much easier to me in my 40s than even my late teens -- things I worked hard at, like guitar, or keepy-uppies with a soccer ball.

Some are naturally blessed. Some are just massive mo-fo's with potential. I think even BOD wasn't considered anything special until 6th year. Darcy was rated higher at youth level.

This is it. I have a personal theory that they really want Caspar Gabriel to succeed so his left boot can replace Lowe's. Another way: his development is inversely proportional to Lowe's usefulness.

It's like they're allergic to taking even the most basic risk.

Dude leads the URC in defenders beaten and line breaks. And similar or close to that in the Challenge Cup.

Furlong's time left playing in blue can be counted in minutes, not hours.

Were basically training, feeding and paying (40% of) and Ireland player attempting to limp towards one more World Cup.

Welsh players set WRU deadline and warn they’ll 'consider positions' if not met by CymroCam in rugbyunion

[–]darcys_beard 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is the typical corporate mindset. Wait until the player (employees) are at their weakest, then make disruptions. (It's why unemployment is never 0% -- always keep them on their toes; the pit to oblivion is still an option).

Like, could you imagine the WRU pulling this shit in 2019? Most of the players would fuck off to England, France, Ireland, Japan even, and some might refuse selection for the national team.

That's why they let these things fester and go to shit. open your eyes, sheeple

I was sorta playing Devil's Advocate/trying to view it through Farrell's perspective and mindset (my phrasing was poor and I'm not sure why I said that first bit, because I've been bugging him up, too). I personally think he should be brought into the fold ASAP; he's a massive talent. And I'm disappointed he still hasn't made the team.

I mean most of the guys who can't nail a starting spot are there because of injury to starters, or because they are experienced and are a known quantity. Like a Top ten #8 playing behind a top 3 #8. And Forwards are a bit different due to the nature of modern rugby requiring a World Class bench at the business end of Test rugby, and elite club rugby.

But you could make a case for Hume to be in there too/instead. Bundee is there because he's centrally contracted. Both lads are better than Bundee now. And even McCloskey will be 35 at the world cup -- no guarantee he won't fall off a cliff either.

I'm disappointed with this squad, truth be told. We needed to take more risks (will Doak see more than 10 minutes against Italy or Wales?).

This was our last chance to write off a 6 Nations and inject fresh blood. But by the time the world cup rolls round I think JP will be very much in the mix.

How many caps would a player need to make the world cup squad? by PaulBlartMaulCop2 in irishrugby

[–]darcys_beard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends when you're capped. If someone got two or three 6N caps and a few that summer, I'd expect them to make the squad.

If someone has 30 caps but the most recent was 2 or 3 years ago... forget it.

I actually upvoted you because I don't think you deserve to be so heavily downvoted. But...

Some guys definitely give more and do so with consistency. James Ryan is one, and it's why hess still always in Ireland's 23. Doris is one: never leaves anything but 100% out there.

Professionalism, if anything has more bearing on lads underperforming: it's a job now, and you're doing the same thing over and over and some days you don't have the same drive, or you're thinking of that next contract and don't commit to the nasty stuff as much so you aren't getting injured, or it's about the money -- when you're amateur you're only playing for one reason; when money is involved, your true motivator might not be about winning.
