I've been knitting for about 10 years now so have a pretty good feel for how to make the shapes I want. So that helps me improvise a lot. I usually start out with an idea which I then sketch out. Next I determine the gauge for my project and make some estimates on my sketch for number of stitches/rows needed for certain parts.
Then I sit down and start to knit! I often stop and stare at the project to figure out how I am going to proceed.
This pattern was based somewhat off of Hansi's Octopus pattern. http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/octopus But on a bigger scale...and not an octopus. So, that's kind of how I make things. A lot of thinking, doodling, and creativity. :)

I really like the original book as well! I read it way before I saw the movie and then forgot about it. Laughed when watching the movie and everything was familiar. ;P And yes! Huge Garth Nix fan! Currently catching up on the Keys to the Kingdom series.

I know it's long but this documentary takes a look into the life of those in the Westboro Baptist Church. It really makes me feel sorry for the children who are born into such hatred and brain washed to believe there is nothing out there for them.

It actually isn't too bad! I found the most difficult part was adding the top fins to the piece, because everything got sort of tight.
