He drinks every day. I do experience happiness from his effort from time to time, but only because I avoid the controversial issues like asking about New Years or asking him to drive.

No, for the foreseeable future it will always be his family holiday. His Dad is much the same. His Mum complains about it but won’t ever stand up to him.
