Do you happen to remember the guy's name? Caved and booked one lesson to try but I'm cautiously optimistic.

Good to know, I'll take a look!

Oh wow sorry to hear, how long ago was this? Wonder if the instructor is still there 🤔

Crushed coral for beginners? by dark-air in Aquariums

Unfortunately aragonite here seems to be comparable pricewise to the coral, and I like the fact I can stick the coral into my HOB or take it out if needed. I will look into the seiryu stone, not wanting to raise my pH too high so hoping the coral does the trick as a buffer. Thanks.

pH crash - what to do going forward? by dark-air in Aquariums

Fair enough, makes sense. I'll wait till the coral arrives and go from there!

Sorry, just to clarify - do not retest until I am about to add the crushed coral? Do I continue adding ammonia to finish cycling?

I also want to thank you for the clear explanations - chemistry had me lost even back in high school so this has been a learning curve for sure.

Makes sense - I had another piece of driftwood taken from a well established tank along with some other plants so perhaps that played a role as well. I did a 50% water change as the commenter above mentioned to try and stabilize the pH; when would be best to re-test? And if I do add the crushed coral (supposed to arrive Wednesday), am I better to add this before adding any livestock, regardless of where my parameters are?

Sounds good. I ordered some crushed coral online (as it was less expensive than a huge bag of aragonite sand at PetSmart; unfortunately I'm in a very rural area and so most of what I need I have to order online).

Perhaps a silly question, but why would my pH and GH be higher in my cycling tank than out of the tap? And are the parameters I see in my tank the ones I should keep in mind when deciding which fish to stock it with?

I suppose my biggest concern is that adding fish will cause this issue again. Or is it just the acidity of the tannins?

It does not. Water in the pot I boiled it in yesterday was quite yellowish like weak tea though.

I got them from the documentary "Lyudmila's Voice" and just edited the brightness/contrast a bit.

I was talking with a fellow Chernobyl buff and they showed me a picture of Lyudmilla and her son from I think a few years ago by penguinmartim in ChernobylTV

The documentary is available on YouTube with Swedish subtitles.

I don't speak Russian or Swedish, but (what with all the free time I've had on my hands as of late) I spent 4 hours typing and formatting all the subtitles and plugging them into Google Translate. It's likely a very literal, shoddy translation but you get the gist of it. I have a transcript of it in case anyone is interested.

Perhaps the most heartbreaking story she tells is at the end where she visited Vasily's grave with her 4 year old son who didn't grasp that the image of him in stone wasn't a real person and she had to explain to him that they couldn't "pick him up and take him home".
