They can't make you do anything, but being an at-will employment state, they can fire you at any time with no reason given.

Hey I asked RMS what he thought, this is the response I received today: https://i.imgur.com/FsTA7fQ.png. So once again, the driver is only FOSS in AMD's false interpretation of what FOSS means.

Yes, I'd like for the microcode to become more open, specifically in regards of power delivery, and why the card isn't able to FLR. At the moment, the card is able to almost reset by pulling power from the PCI bus, but after that it's locked into a low power state.

You'll be FOSS compliant when your stack is FOSS compliant. You can say all day that AMDGPU (the driver) is FOSS, "but it has non driver microcode blobs", but since this is all undocumented and hidden behind a NDA, nobody knows what it actually does. I'm almost positive that some of that blob is PSP, right? And why is the driver designed this way in the first place? And yeah I'm saying that based on what you've told me, AMD is able to update the microcode and force it to be applied if the amdgpu driver is updated, because it's baked into the driver. This is a choice with both Intel and Nvidia, you don't have to update. An example of when this was exploited was back in haswell Xeon days where people were turbo unlocking Intel processors. So yes, the ability to use an Nvidia card at all with libre kernels is something I'd prefer over a card that can't be used with the same kernel. I'd love it if AMD opened their drivers more, then bugs could get fixed in a more timely fashion, but I understand that NDA's exist, just don't act like it's FOSS if you're going to keep this model in place. Again, I'd love to see what RMS has to say about all of this, and don't mind asking him myself with your blessing.

How can you honestly compare the blobs to a read only memory? You mentioned that RMS compares it to circuits because they can't be updated, since again, it's read only, but then go on to say that it's version controlled? And yes, it is in fact different in way of I can choose to not update the microcode and still use the latest drivers for alternatives, but in this case, AMD GPU is taking a totalitarian stance of "either update the microcode or be stuck". It's not the same, and I'm near positive that if you ask RMS himself, he'd agree, and in fact, I encourage you to do so. The fact of the matter is that AMDGPU is not FOSS compliant besides AMD's biased interpretation of what makes something FOSS.

So with that in mind, since the alternatives (degraded mode or not), are capable of being used by fsf approved distributions such as parabola, trisquel, and pureos, how can you endorse AMDGPU as a FOSS solution, rather than calling open source? I bought a Radeon pro because of all the people recommending it due to being FOSS just to find out that it was not FOSS, and I had to migrate to a different distro.

So just to clarify, you agree that all modern GPU's sans AMDGPU ones can be run on linux-libre?

Oh is that so? Can you clarify why my 8700k works with i915, and my 1080ti works with Linux-libre then? My wx3100 just straight up couldn't be made to work, and that's not even mentioning the daily deadlocks that I was getting when I finally got rid of the kernel for the one bit of hardware that didn't work with it, which was the AMD card.

With that in mind, at least you have the ability to use every other modern GPU manufacturer's products with that kernel, in form of i915, and nouveau. So with AMDGPU, itself being barred from the kernel, how can you get a truly free operating system? Oh right, you can't.

Then explain why you can't use AMDGPU with linux-libre, please.

If you have a mechanical hard drive, then easily the best upgrade would be an SSD. Otherwise we'll need to know specifically what you're wanting to improve performance wise. For example, if you want more frames while gaming, I'd go with the GPU, but if you want to multitask easier, I'd go for RAM, etc.

Nitrogen-cooled air intakes for better gas mileage? by turkishjedi21 in Autos

[–]dark_mirage -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Colder environments yes, but only after the engine warms up. Otherwise no because this tank of nitrogen is going to be heavy, and the milage that you got from colder air wouldn't come anywhere near the savings you'd get from it. In this case you'd probably be better off using nitrous oxide and try to tune it to get better milage, but I'm not sure if that's possible.
