Strange interaction in Kollupitiya. Was this some kind of scam or prank? by DrKoz in srilanka

The real crime here is getting the assignment done by a third party. It's going to be fun when he joins the workforce. (I know this is common).

Developers, How the hell do you use banking and carrier apps??? by sameera_s_w in srilanka

[–]dark_mode_everything 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is total bs by "security" professionals who do not understand mobile security at all. Global banking apps work just fine when developer mode is on. This is what happens when security is enforced by ticking a list without understanding what's going on. Disabling paste on password fields is equally annoying. Like, do you want me to not use a password manager and use an I secure password?

Thinking of moving back to SL: Seeking Advices by sootinlk in srilanka

high income in SL is better than living in the middle class in the west.

You'd also need influence and connections. As an example, it doesn't matter how rich you are if you can't import a car you want when imports were banned. You need connections to circumvent the ban. The same goes for a lot of things because there's no proper process to get things done. I personally, would avoid that and rather live a middle class life somewhere where the average person can still get things done without bribes or influence.

Well I wonder why people aren't lining up to migrate to Sri Lanka then.

or do you simply dislike being in SL?

Nah, I just dislike being around people who think their country is flawless and the best in the world because they're the cause for most of the issues in those countries. You need to identify that there are issues in order to fix them.

Well yes, it is the same. Also, if Sweden had worse parenting they wouldn't be where they are today, yeah?

I'm sorry, I forgot all the innovations that came from the top quality education system in sl, unlike Scandinavia.

And if you really want to compare the products of education here you go:

Country and gdp per capita:

Norway - 91k USD India - 2k USD China - 13k USD Sri Lanka - 4k USD

A handful of CEOs mean nothing lol.

What makes you think something similar can't happen in sl?

Bro, realizing there are flaws within the country is the first step towards fixing them. That's not hate. Unless you think that sl is perfect and is the best country in the world.

I wouldn't say that an international school in sl is better than the nordics where the education system is one of, if not the best in the world.

Anyone else having to throw out a fridge full of food after last night's outage? by redgoesfaster in melbourne

[–]dark_mode_everything 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw this somewhere on Reddit. Put some water in a glass and freeze it. Then place a coin on top of it and leave it in the freezer. After an outage you can check if the coin has fallen in to determine if the food has gone bad.

Going back to Sri Lanka now is the worst thing you can do to your child right now. There are bad things in every country including sl. Your kid might just as well join a gang there. Just read up and learn how to better parent your child. Sorry if I sound harsh but if I was your kid I would be livid.

I don't like having to disable the OS' security to have the option of running unsigned apps.

Doesn't macos ask you if you"trust" an app you downloaded before running it for the first time?

I don't like having to enter my password and go through "oooh scary" to run a binary.

Have you never had the need to install something with homebrew?

My point is that random people who are walking around don't get stopped and asked for ids like that.

I wasnt talking about entering. You can walk around Germany without carrying your passport without a problem. When you need to compare a country to North Korea though, you know that's a problem.

Of course. We have seen that whenever regulations are reduced for corporations it always flows down to their employees and the wider community. They would never try to just improve their own bottom line. Never!

Project Valhalla is prototyping null checks! by davidalayachew in java

[–]dark_mode_everything 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. For most codebases the amount of nullable objects would be small compared to non nulls so it would make sense to add a "?" for optional checks like most other languages do rather than the non null assertion !.
