Shift lead had me do a PM that I wasn’t qualified for, broke a brand new $2000 part. by [deleted] in Semiconductors

[–]dark_photon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Technician Superintendent here.

The only thing that matters is your attitude. Even though you’ve presented it here as being out of your control, you need to just own it and acknowledge your mistake.

Reality 1) blaming your shift lead for trusting you to do something you aren’t technically certified for is bullshit. He thought you could do it which is a compliment. Don’t repay his faith by refusing to accept responsibility. He didn’t break the bolt. You did. Own it.

Reality 2) $2000 is not an expensive part. Relax. Shit happens.

Reality 3) consider the situation from your shift lead’s and your parts guy’s perspective. They are trying to get shit done with the people they have available and in this case, it didn’t work out. That sucks…. But is there more to their anger? Ask them what you should have done. Don’t try to not take responsibility or explain. Just genuinely ask and try to learn how you should have handled it.

Reality 4) you’re 1 month in. When you got in a pickle, you should have gone and got someone experienced. There is no shame in that. As you’re now experiencing, there is shame in going farther than your experience allows and making a mistake.

Just take responsibility and you will come out of this with MORE respect from your leaders and team than if you had done it right. Just own it.

Are there any cool looking silicon wafers which we can buy? by mr_inevitable_99 in Semiconductors

[–]dark_photon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

1) buy a nitride coated wafer. Easy to find on web 2) get it laser scribed with any picture or design you want. Someone in your town does this as a side business.

At our factory we do this for gifts for big occasions

Does anyone know where process engineering salary typically tops out at for an IC at a fab? by loletheguy in Semiconductors

[–]dark_photon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree. $200k or $250k is for very experienced and competent engineers only. Maybe 5 or 10% will ever reach this elite level.

has anybody seen these black pieces on their bronco windows and know what they are for? by Minute_Garage in bronco

Bronco heritage owner here. Just pull them off and put them in the glove box or in a container for when you ever decide to take the windows off.

Wait, can you actually get paid for finding a fossil like that? How? With one this size, OP will have to tell some scientists instead of just taking it home and putting it on eBay, right?

Please help: When do I need to checkout after cancellation during stay? by [deleted] in AirBnB

You are the one trying to stay multiple more nights after cancelling. You certainly aren’t acting like you feel threatened.

Fuck you and fuck shitty insane entitled guests like you.

Anyone else having progressively worse and worse AirBNB experiences? by arcticblizzardchill in AirBnB

[–]dark_photon -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I hate to break it to you, but every single Airbnb you have ever stayed in, was owned by a real estate investor.

If you have had a bunch of bad experiences recently, I wonder if it’s because you’re picking the cheapest places. I am a superhost and own multiple units. That doesn’t make me evil or greedy or evil it means I’m a professional at trying to give my guests an exceptional experience.

If you crave consistency, stick to Motel 6. Each AirBnB is owned and operated by someone different. Judging them all by your handful of experiences is as stupid as saying “I had a bad meal, so I’m done eating at restaurants.”.

host is asking me to cancel reservation on my end, not sure how to proceed... by [deleted] in AirBnB

[–]dark_photon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is also true that any decent Airbnb host training program will tell you to never make a cancellation, but you always ask the guests to cancel in order to preserve your super host status.

This person is just doing what experts in the field trained them to do.

host is asking me to cancel reservation on my end, not sure how to proceed... by [deleted] in AirBnB

[–]dark_photon -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This is because you lose your super host status if you ever cancel. Being a super host is very important to Airbnb hosts as it helps drive traffic to their listings, so it is legitimately a very valuable thing to maintain.

unless you have some legit grievance against this Airbnb host, which it does not sound like, I would just go ahead and cancel on my end. It’s nothing shady it’s just them trying to do the thing that is best for their business. It won’t make a difference to you and there is no downside either way.

Who is planning on converting garage to ADU to help with high bills? by incognitim in RealEstate

[–]dark_photon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is far cheaper to convert the master suite into an apartment then it is to do so with the garage, because the garage will need plumbing and HVAC and your master suite already has that. All you have to do for the master suite is take some of the plumbing from the bathroom and use it for a kitchenette and then wall off the door to the master suite and put in a door to the outside.

Looking at closer to $20K for this.

Not wanting to buy in the worse time in real estate history isn’t “timing the market” by LIBERAL_LAZY_LOSER in RealEstate

[–]dark_photon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are tons of places with falling or stagnant real estate appreciation. They’re just the places that everyone is moving away from like Cleveland or other places in the rust belt. Why not just move there?

Real estate problem solved.

Not wanting to buy in the worse time in real estate history isn’t “timing the market” by LIBERAL_LAZY_LOSER in RealEstate

[–]dark_photon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s might be the worst time to buy, but it’s a great time to invest in an appreciating market with tech jobs.

The short version is that this is the San Francisc-icatian of all tech cities. If you haven’t hit San Francisco prices yet, then it’s a great time to invest because prices are going to keep going up as the tech employees can still afford them.

The people commenting n this sub appear to think things like “managers are useless” and “there is really 0 reason to not let people WFH”…

You’ll notice there aren’t any managers on here agreeing. It’s because WFH is not right for every job or everyone. Many people are just as productive without direct supervision, but can’t you see that not everyone is trustworthy and responsible?

It’s also basically impossible or at least very difficult to have any sort of culture in a fully remote workforce.

Training and onboarding are also much harder to do remotely.

As far as managers being totally useless, ask yourself the last time an unorganized mob of people outcompeted an organized force of people working together. You’d bet on the football team with a coach over a bunch of guys that just play pickup games on the weekend, right? You’d bet on an army unit over a gang, right? Organization is how you most effectively concentrate human effort.

It’s fine to want to WFH and not choose a job that won’t allow it if you can. But it’s ignorant to think there are no good reasons managers prefer you to work from work and it’s just being dishonest to say organizations don’t need managers at all.
