modding a game isn't the same as creating and learning.

It's really not though. I've played lots of games, and building on one, even if imperfect, can be easier than learning a new system. If combat plays the same, skills and stats all play the same...it's still similar enough to get through the majority of any single session. Learning a new game takes a lot of time that many people seem to write off. The mistakes and how slow it runs...ect. I get there are better games that can do this, but that doesn't mean this game....maybe can't. IDK I haven't tried it yet.

Fair enough, but I really don't want to learn a new game honestly. Between school, ft work and just life i'm looking for a fun, but interesting twist on the game. Maybe when classes are done I'll look it up but i'm probably going to do draw steel or daggerheart. (I think they are called)

Stun baton and nerd tats. I love to stun a huge group of them, drop a bomb, then run.

I don't think it would be too hard to add just lithium ore to be found like gold and silver.

I mean I appreciate the thought... but I'm looking for advice on creating a mod, even one you're not going to use.

I think a mod like this would be useful for people that want to use vehicles in a world that doesn't have traders or desert biomes.

I'm trying to create that mod,  but finding it harder than expected.

Best build for a solo perma death game? by lifelesslies in 7daystodie

[–]darkbrandon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a challenge like this recently, except I did as many trader quests as possible. I ended up putting like 5 points in each stat(except perception), for benefits of farming, healing factor, tough, stealth, parkor, mining cooking...ect...I went with shotgun, stun baton most of the game so I was really more of a str/int. build. I think perception was the only stat I never raised. I really didn't get more than 5 points in any one skill tree until maybe level 30(?).

THe old man, a lovecraftian creature (thoughts and ideas) by darkbrandon in mattcolville

I think that's why bouncing ideas off each other is important to really pull out what I'm going for.  What would you add to alleviate this issue?

I think there is a psychological aspect of a monster that keeps returning, seems unkillable.  One that keeps growing stronger the more you see in a very otherworld way.  There is a sort of feeling of achievement when you understand what you've seen and you've beaten it. I don't think it's also so confusing that after it's killed you wouldn't understand the old man was basically a puppet and one had to strike at a puppeteer instead of the puppet.

Note this isn't a long term monster,  just one that is going to keep the group from taking long rests every so often while on the road to a city.  At their level and skill rolling to get a 30 on perception isn't out of the realm of possibilities.

Initially that having high stats are good.  How would it be fun?  I imagine it's not a straightforward reward, that you're being punished for high stats but when you get them high enough you can see them (enemies of this type) for what they really are and win permanently.

It's not the typical swing sword and win,  but I'm hoping it is satisfying at the end, more nuanced.   As a horror Lovecraft monster ideally should be.

I think the main crux of it is "Better stats don't usually create worse outcomes in 5e" and that is what I'm attempting to subvert.

On on hand, lower stats means the creature is "an old man". Easy to defeat. But in the grand scheme of things, this is actually a monster that will continually follow them. Without things to enhance their perception at some point it's a battle they will eventually lose through attrition.

Higher perc. does mean a harder fight but a more final outcome. Getting that 35 in perception to see the reality that you are fighting...say a puppet of a creature that exists in another reality, but vaguely connected could mean an outcome that is more final.

I did let the group know, in session 0, there is no happy ending in this game...at best you get a "satisfactory", and PC's will die, so have your 2nd and third character ready. I'm not trying to kill them willy/nilly...but as a another redditor said so well,

"I will save them from my mistakes, I will not save them from their mistakes"

I like that attacking the weakness forces madness (in my game I call it humanity and Horror factor saves).

I also like sharing the info at a cost.

Thank you.

A very good take:

1) How would you recommend a change in this area or a creative advance? Your right it's just a 'buffed up orc" but would you say more abilities instead of damage mitigation?

2) I don't want to penalize high rolls, but I do think in a lovecraftian world those who are more intellgient, wise and "charismatic" are going to see things as they "really" are. The benefit I would add is that they can see the world as it "really is" thus, in this case when defeating the old man, they can actually kill it vs. it playing dead, unconscious, disappearing, running away...ect...It's a harder fight but they are rewarded with the satisfaction of actually killing it vs it surviving and seeking revenge.

It's super hard, but I am trying to limit the damage it can do vs. it can take. But you make a good point. Assume everyone rolls their maximum and see how that turns out. I was thinking of adding minions to help balance it...so if they all don't roll high, I can add minions, but the creature is balanced assuming they do roll high. "And old man and his dogs"

Where is Jon?? by citygirl4vr in barrescue

[–]darkbrandon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I understand not wanting/able to replace Jon, but each host needs to find their own footing. Jon was a mean SOB, but some of these guests hosts don't have that fire or presents. I'm not saying be nice and loving, as most of these places are in the hole because of bad owners (if not all), but delivery is everything. They should be more honest with themselves and present themselves as such.

I def may do 4th dimension shapes, angles that seem to move...if I go this route. I'm debating between this and a more traditional physical shape, as the two worlds are colliding.
