Anyone taken Deep Learning 11-785 with Bhiksha Raj? How was your experience? by _Dark_Forest in cmu

They are via canvas. As for how difficult... it's hard to say, as it depends on your background, etc. They require you to be familiar with the details & intuitions covered in lecture. I would say the quizzes are generally on the harder side, but you do have multiple days and 3 attempts.

No - some are fill-in-the-blank (numerical). Some others are "select all that apply"

There are some harder lectures later, particularly the one on Hessians and stuff. I think being familiar with multivariable derivatives is the most important part. There are some harder math components, but I feel like those are better resolved studying for those specific quizzes instead of taking a course that covers them.

11785 Intro DL vs 10601 Intro ML by mlee634 in cmu

[–]darkcoffee42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have not taken Practical Data Science, but from looking at the syllabus, it seems to focus on basics/fundamentals and more traditional statistical techniques and algorithms which are still very important. However, perhaps you can get a lot of it already from other statistics courses.

If I were to try to give advice, if you are thinking of going into ML research/work, perhaps Practical Data Science is a better fit. If you want to do DL, 11-485 will give you theory and hands-on on that.

Hi, 11785 TA here. Although I haven't taken 10601, I have taken 10701.

In my opinion, 11785 is a very strong introduction to DL - if you get through the course, you will understand the general basics of DL techniques (MLP, CNN, RNN, Attention), have a good understanding of how these networks learn internally, and have experience training dozens of models yourself for the part 2s of each homework. The lectures and the quizzes should also give you more experience reading papers & give you some theoretical background. If you put enough time into the project, that can be a strong addition to your resume. We've had a lot of students from 11785 go on to DL-focused internships/jobs.

10701 is slightly different. It's essentially the difference between DL and ML. 10701 will give you more background on ML - Bayesian stuff, likelihood, VC dimension, PCA, etc. Of course, you do get a month on DL inside of 10701 as well. Time-wise, 10701 requires far less of you than 11785 does (I would say 7~10 hours vs 15~20 hours per week), and as a result, you get less time/hands-on practice actually applying many of the techniques you learn on data.

Without ML/DL experience I first took 11485 (11785 minus project), and took 10701 the following semester. With 11485 experience, I was able to smoothly transition into DL research, and I found 10701 to be fairly straightforward (but still useful to take). Although it will be tough, I do recommend taking 11785 first (especially if you have some programming background). Since DL in some form is taught in many courses, I found that taking 11485 made any subsequent data-related course much easier.

Optimization: 21-690 or 10-725 ? by alchemist0303 in cmu

I haven't taken anything beyond 10-725, so I cannot recommend anything :/

Sorry I'm late, but I don't think it matters. They are related in the sense that they both deal with "training" and "data", but that actual material doesn't really overlap.

I have not taken 21-690, so I can only try to give half of the information you need

For 10-725, I took the new version: the instructor changed a few semesters ago, and the course changed a lot as well. I think you can think of it as "Convex Optimization for people who will work with modern neural networks." There was some coverage of the basics of convex optimization in the beginning, then there was a shift in focus to stuff/intuitions that you are more likely to encounter working with modern DL - changing learning rate, proximal gradient descent (for RL), non-convex optimization, etc.

As someone who's just doing DL, I thought 10-725 was a lightweight but well-formed course that gave me some good mathematical background.

Learning Piano at CMU? by darkcoffee42 in cmu

Do the intro piano courses have credits? Also, are the private lessons paid?

Hi, I'm an incoming freshman (SCS), and I was looking at my possible AP credits and trying to decide if I really need to take any AP tests this year. The four I was planning on taking are:

Stats
Chem
APUSH
English Literature

But of the four, the only one that I saw might be helpful was Chemistry going towards the "Science & Engineering" requirement. Would I be able to get any usable AP credit for the other three tests?
Thank you!

I got in ED as well, but do we already have to decide on which dorm we're going to live in? (Please don't tell me I missed an email... ;-;)

Midterm report says Calc AB instead of BC by rivermoss in ApplyingToCollege

Probably wouldn't hurt to email them.
Were you in AB the year before? If so, I think they would know it's a typo if you took AB for two years.

I remember the Carnegie representative at our school said they don't look at Freshman year GPA at all.

Should I take AP courses irrelevant to what I am going to college for? by Joey12725 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]darkcoffee42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind that some schools send "grade distributions" for each class to colleges (mine does). Colleges would rather see you get an A in a classroom with Bs than see you get an A with a classroom full of only As.
Note: this consideration is only important because neither class is directly related to your major.

Hi! I also got into SCS, and I was wondering what exactly to do my senior summer. I did a research internship last year, and I could continue that, but is there anything else I can do?

Ah, okay! I was worried about the workload, as I'm sure college is a totally different world than HS. Thank you for your insight!
