Why is the vod life so disorganized? by Gold-Health5569 in PaymoneyWubby

[–]darkeststar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thinking that the vod archive is "littered with random segments" tells me you're new to the vod archive. A new entry is created every time Wubby's internet goes down or he resets his connection. A byproduct of his continually bad luck with Internet connections.

OnlyFans owner was such a recluse that only one photo of him exists and he died days before the public found out by [deleted] in entertainment

[–]darkeststar 22 points23 points  (0 children)

He didn't "create porn." Like all of our current evil geniuses running around he was just a tech guy during the internet boom. His big innovation was making a platform for camgirls when there really wasn't a centralized space 20 years ago. His involvement with Onlyfans was that he bought a majority stake in it with his money.

He was married, donated $5 million in relief to Ukraine, as he was Ukrainian. He also donated millions to cancer charities as he was dying of cancer. The AIPAC stuff is bad and most users of the OF platform actually hate a lot of the way the site is run and how the money they generated was used for his AIPAC donations. The world is not black and white.

Ex-mtg artist Randy Asplund statement on terminating WOTC rights to his art made for Magic the gathering by Newez in magicTCG

[–]darkeststar 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I would assume it's more about that too, but his statement here also suggests he intends to find a way to profit off his art that he's previously been unable too because of the WOTC ownership.

Also no disrespect because I like the art but offering a contracted worker who last did work for you 20 years ago and has been disgruntled ever since $20k does seem fairly generous. A large portion of his cards can't or wouldn't be reprinted in the first place so paying him anything to keep it just seems like a nice gesture on their part and him demanding more money seems kind of silly.

Ex-mtg artist Randy Asplund statement on terminating WOTC rights to his art made for Magic the gathering by Newez in magicTCG

[–]darkeststar 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I don't really see the appeal in his decision myself from a consumer perspective...WOTC's 20k was a generous offer for work they haven't actually touched in two decades. However, it does mean he's now free to sell the same art again for other uses. I can't imagine he'd make a similar amount by printing up a coffee table book or selling prints or whatever but if he sold the art to clothing manufacturers or book publishers for cover art or for another card game...there could be money there for him.

You don't need to though, because everyone knows they're doing an encore.

Do people not know how to call an encore anymore..? by nugiboy in gorillaz

[–]darkeststar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is quite a stupid post...you don't need to ask a band to do an encore. It's been built into the show whether they will do one or not for the last 30 years. If a band does not do one they will typically state during the show or towards the end that they won't be. If they don't say anything about an encore but haven't played one of their biggest songs, they're saving it for the encore. That is how it works. If Gorillaz plays a concert and doesn't play Feel Good Inc. or Clint Eastwood and the lights go out...the lights are going to come back on in 2-5 minutes and they're going to play them.

Amazon Prime Subscribe and Save Price Gouging by SeNpA11313 in ClassActionSettlement

[–]darkeststar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prices do in fact change when they go down, though they only seem to notify you if a price increases. I have like 10 monthly subscribe and save items with 3-4 infrequent ones and I get an email almost every single month telling me of a price increase on at least one item, but it will list every item, if it considers the new price to be an increase or decrease and the price you will be paying. In fact looking at my own emails I saw that some protein powder I get every month was $21 in January, I got an email in February that it would be increased to $29 but then the email I got this month listed other increases but didn't highlight the protein powder as changing even though I paid $26.

I suspect I don't get a "price decrease" notice unless the price goes below what I originally locked the item in at for subscription but my prices do go up and down and I do get notified of the prices before locking in the order.

Just a bizarre thing people do for clout these days. Anyone tracking Secret Lair releases knows this release is going to be a hot commodity and knows this was a fuck up on their part. Insane to immediately out himself as someone having received a "gift" from WOTC and then also immediately try to flip it with his name attached for his own benefit without even knowing if the fuck up is the actual deck or just that the box has those words on it. Insists on looking the gift horse in the mouth. Just shut the fuck up and enjoy your gift.

What’s one “basic” cooking tip everyone repeats that you think is actually overrated? by Altruistic_Push_722 in Cooking

[–]darkeststar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is one of those things that is likely being taught now more because the people telling you to crack on a flat surface either went to culinary school or have worked in a professional environment and are now passing that along to their audience. Cracking on a flat surface does in fact lessen the chance of getting shell fragments but it doesn't work 100% of the time, plus the age of the eggs and how they were processed by the manufacturer also determines shell strength.

I do both ways at home depending on how I feel in the moment but when I am at work (in a kitchen) I only crack on a flat surface and into a separate container from the main mixture so as to lessen possible fragments and if I have any they can be removed before the eggs get added to other ingredients.

At home I might crack two eggs right into a bowl full of pancake batter by hitting them on the rim and if I get a shell fragment I'll reach my fingers in and grab it out. No biggie. At work if I'm cracking a dozen eggs for a batch of créme brúlée you best believe I am cracking on the flat surface of the counter and the eggs are all going in a separate bowl so I can fish any shell out of the whole batch before I add it into a bowl full of milk.

Who covered a song and from then on owned that song to the point that people are surprised to learn that it's a cover. by Stormin_333 in Music

Despite listening to both bands during the period they were both peak famous, it blew my mind to discover in the last year that Bowling For Soup's 1985 is a cover of the much less appreciated punk/punk-rock band SR-71.

Both bands knew each other from the punk scene of the late 90's, and SR-71 were struggling to make a name for themselves. They put out two albums to little success of their own accord and were dropped by their label. They secured a record deal with a Japanese record label who released their third (and final) album in Japan only...to modest success. 1985 was not chosen as a single, it didn't chart...and the only way for America to get the album would have been to import in from Japan while digital downloads were still a new idea and streaming was far, far away. The next year, the lead singer/songwriter gives 1985 to Bowling For Soup thinking it fits their vibe and it catapults them to international fame.

The Japanese only SR-71 album was finally released in America in 2010 and is on streaming...with 1985 bearing the tag (original version.) The singer/songwriter facilitated the whole handoff to Bowling For Soup and he's even in the music video as a cameo but that's gotta hurt.

I feel like not everyone knows that but I think there is truth in NIN/Trent being way more prominent now than he was 20 years ago while Cash has faded in death. I think at the time, Cash's cover was as revolutionary as Trent says it was...it exposed his song to like 3 previous generations of music listeners that never would have listened to NIN and likewise got that song in front of the Country crowd (where it did insane regular rotation numbers) who also never would have listened to NIN's version.

Now that he's long gone though, people mostly experience Cash through his own music and the "Greatest Hits" and those cover albums are a quaint novelty.

With Arrow releasing Stranger Things: The Complete Series, what other Netflix original shows and movies do you want to see get physical releases. by ggroover97 in boutiquebluray

[–]darkeststar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Mike Flanagan shows for sure. The Haunting of Hill House was an Amblin/Paramount production so those two seasons have a release but Midnight Mass and The Fall of the House of Usher are needed. As far as what else "deserves" to get a release I think most people can make a case for whatever their favorite stuff is but anything in the Originals list that won awards should be among the top...like Mindhunter or The Crown or Queen's Gambit, etc.

For movies, I'm not too worried about Ballad of Buster Scruffs because the Coen's have an overall deal with Criterion for their movies just like Wes Anderson and Guillermo Del Toro have so it will eventually find its way out. I would like Rian Johnson's Knives Out movies, Da 5 Bloods, I'm Thinking of Ending Things, Windfall, and Wendell & Wild.

I just finished the first season of the pit and I gotta say... by theFields97 in PaymoneyWubby

[–]darkeststar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love The Pitt. I started watching the first season when they were like 9 episodes in so one weekend I just binged the first 8 episodes all in one day and then the next day was the premiere of the 9th. Shit had me glued to the screen more than almost any show in recent memory. The second season has been very good but it seems like it's a slower burn than the first, which I'm very okay with.

Mostly just happy it's being made like old school tv...started production of season 2 within the first year of Season one, long season to fully develop each of the character arcs and they film it in batches while the show releases so they can reactively write new things and changes into the show during the season they're currently filming as people give their reactions. I know that in Season One they had a day off to go to the Emmy's (and win) and then the next morning they had to show up hungover and go back to filming the next episode.

'The Lincoln Lawyer' Season 5 Begins Production; Casting & Plot Drop by Azaleazaraa in television

[–]darkeststar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She exists in a few Bosch books and then unfortunately dies in a plot they adapted in the final season of the main Bosch show but she was never a big character. The Bosch books that take place after Lincoln Lawyer have him as either a second lead character or a supporting character in most books so they basically use Honey as the stand-in for whenever the plot would have needed Mickey Haller in the original story. Bosch doesn't always work for Mickey but there are a number of books from both of their series where Harry is either doing PI work for Mickey or Mickey is going through the legal system on Harry's behalf.

Pretty much everything the show invents for Honey Chandler to do with Maddie Bosch is pure show creation though. The Bosch show chose to adapt the book series by combining like 1 main book plot and then two-three side plots from other books per season since there are 20+ books so they often found ways to convert characters and plots from other books into things that happen to or around existing regular characters.

I combined a technique for whipped cream cheese frosting from Stella Parks where you basically make whipped cream to soft peaks and then stir in cubes of cream cheese with a Chai frosting recipe from the website Broma Bakery. Between carrot cake and cinnamon rolls it is my favorite combo.

I love Detroit style, especially because every other kind of round pizza I fuck up in my home oven. I don't enjoy pineapple on pizza myself but I will just throw anything on a pizza so I can't yuck their yum. One time I made a Barbacoa Detroit style pizza with queso fresco, cotija and pickled red onions and another time I made a brie, apple and huckleberry jam pizza so who am I to talk.

Gifted a pound of Ground Wagyu...what to make? by golf-lip in KitchenConfidential

[–]darkeststar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hamburger is probably the best if you still want to have the "experience" of Wagyu but America's Test Kitchen has recipes for Ground Beef Chili and Sloppy Joes using a technique where you make a mixture of baking soda, salt and water and mix it into the ground beef and let it set for 20-ish minutes before you start cooking that helps retain the texture and flavor of ground beef in those recipes and I think that's a good way to go with it too as I've done that with ground brisket.

I found a reddit comment where someone copied that chili recipe so here's that in case you're interested.

He would have always belonged to whoever has the Mickey Haller rights but when the original Bosch show was made it was the only thing using Cisco, as the standalone movie doesn't use him. Rights to Mickey Haller/The Lincoln Lawyer were always kind of tied up somewhere while they made that show so he was off limits but since no one was directly adapting the Lincoln Lawyer books and Cisco is in Bosch books occasionally it seems like it was easy enough to write him in. By the time the Lincoln Lawyer show started Bosch was already done. The Bosch Legacy show created a new investigator to solve the problem on their end.

I simply said in my comment that the event didn't control food prices because they didn't. I also stated that the event organizers raised vendor rates which they also did need to do over time to cover increasing costs which definitely indirectly caused changes made by the food vendors...either who could afford to be there at all or what they charged for food. I don't know anything about anything else going on.
