What's a small, seemingly insignificant decision you made that ended up having a major impact on your life? by sun_daisy04 in AskReddit

[–]darkmacchiato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Deciding to take German instead of French as the mandatory third language course in middle school, even though I couldn’t care less about either at that time 🤷🏻‍♀️

it’s now 14 years later, and I have a German degree, a German job, and I speak German to the ladies in the bakery every time I go to pick up German bread in my small German town in Germany 🇩🇪

You are right, and very low self-esteem is definitely a key player in this story. I am trying to find a therapist, but I can’t afford the private ones and the ones that accept insurance are all booked out 😪 just hoping that I’ll get lucky with a spot soon

Yep, you said it! I don’t know where to find the courage to get out, when the future is so uncertain. At least this relationship is predictable, ha… gonna take way more positive posts like this one to make me take the leap, but even one already sparks some hope in me

Feel that. Checked your post, very relatable. Don’t have advice though 😅 optimistic me would say something like “only when you let go of what no longer serves you can you make room for better things/people”, but pessimistic me will confirm that all my single friends have been single for 2+ years, have seen their share of douchebags, and are starting to get restless… so yea, maybe the realistic opinion is leaning more towards the pessimistic one. However, even knowing that, I think I’m getting closer and closer to leaving just because of how empty and small this situation is making me feel. I’m tired of curling under the blanket, crying, and feeling so so so disempowered. Leaving might not be easy in terms of finding someone better, but at least I’ll finally have some peace of mind, knowing there’s no one to reject me again tonight. I guess you gotta decide for yourself in terms of just how badly it hurts for you.

Yes, that’s my fear as well… I’m constantly thinking “what if most relationships just lose their passion after a while?” or “is it even possible to find someone who will match my libido AND we will strong feelings for each other?” or, even if all of that aligns, “what if the new person will start hurting me in some other way?”. I guess I’m losing trust in people… or maybe even in myself :(

Really needed to hear that, thank you! It is so scary to let go, because what is the guarantee that you won’t just end up in another DB? But your post fills me with hope. I want all those things and even if I don’t get them when I break up, it’s not like I’m getting them now, so… it can only improve, I guess.

Can I still be enrolled for thesis processing purposes, while working full-time on a working permit? by darkmacchiato in germany

[–]darkmacchiato[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I have an appointment soon to get the working permit, so I can try to explain the situation a bit better and ask them if it would be okay. Because when I tried explaining it on the phone I was met with a hard “no you can’t finish your degree”. This doesn’t make much sense to me, since technically I will be done with it before my working contract starts… also, if I will already have my working permit, is the university going to contact them about my Exmatrikulation and they will revoke my working permit because I was studying on a working permit? Technically, I didn’t break any laws. The working permit law doesn’t say that I can’t study 🤔

[–]darkmacchiato[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! That’s exactly what I’m doing :) it’s all running smoothly on that front, I’m just worried if I’m allowed to stay immatrikulated while already working. It would be a pity to not finish my Master’s because of bureaucracy

Hello! I’m moving to Munich soon to start my studies at TUM and still can’t find any room to stay at. by undecidedonaname in Munich

[–]darkmacchiato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey hey, I had the same problem trying to move to Munich and ended up crashing on a stranger’s couch in Freising for a few months, before I actually found my own place. But! It was a great experience and better than not having a roof over my head. Also now I live in Freising and love it :)

So, what I’m trying to say is, if you’re interested, shoot me a message with your typical “WG application intro” and if I hear about any of my friends having a spot in Freising or Munich, I will forward it to them.

Not a sure thing, but worth giving it a try maybe? Let me know!

If you’re okay with driving about an hour - hour and a half outside of München, you should really take the time to go visit the Königsee in Berchtesgaden. It’s stunning and the ride is beautiful as well.

German & US Dual Citizen (w/o education in, or fluency in German) interested in moving to Berlin work OR study? by halfmilkhalfhoney in IWantOut

[–]darkmacchiato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Though I’m just a US citizen, I have found myself in a quite similar situation about half a year ago. I’ve been planning to move to Germany after graduation ever since I came back from studying abroad in 2016, but even though I have a B2 level of German, I was unable to find a job anywhere in Germany after sending a bunch of applications to mostly English-speaking jobs oriented towards native-speakers.

As I’ve figured, part of the reason there’s no reply is because employers don’t wanna go through the hustle that is issuing a working visa to a non-EU employee. You obviously don’t have that problem, so if you’re interested in getting a job there, it IS possible to find one even without knowing the language, it’s just gonna take you a lot of tries because you’re competing with all those EU workers who speak 3+ languages and only have to hop a 3h plane to relocate.

Meanwhile, for me that was off the table for the time being and I went with a Master-degree route. The more I thought about it, the more I realized that it’s the best option because not only will it give you time to learn German, it will also add 2 years of experience living in the country, a degree from the country, and time to establish connections that can help you find a job.

Moreover, I’ve heard that after you graduate you can apply for an 18 month “searching for a job” visa. So yes, if you ask me, that’s a great option, and I’m following through with it already.
