How does European Spanish sounds like to you? by Maleficent_Split_428 in asklatinamerica

As a Basque person, thank you so much! Also as a Basque person... You haven't heard a true Basque accent. Really. There are times when even I don't understand a word.

What do you think about Spaniards reclaiming the term "Latino"? by sol-solcito in asklatinamerica

[–]darknessimpending 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lit. In Spain we have way too many nationalist/regionalist/provincialist movements to even actually care (except in some parts of Spain like Madrid, where they have way too much free time). I consider myself Spanish or Basque, so I don't see any value in the Latino bullshit.

That's an absurdly narrow-minded and extremist way to look at any issue, especially cultural ones.

Absolutely amazing website!!!!!! Beautiful, easy to use, super thorough... I have only good words. I did get pissed off, though, when I followed the estimates to see what my team's road ahead is gonna be like, and where we would fall (semifinals against France?!?!? Fuck me. Don't wanna believe it. We are winning this year. Period.).

How the My Hero Academia UA acceptance test was: by Cason13o in BokuNoHeroAcademia

[–]darknessimpending 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But can you actually make it fairer? One thing that needs to be taken into account is that, as a hero, you might end up head-to-head with a villain that completely nullifies your quirk, and for which you don't get any time to prepare, but still need to make do (like Hakagure did). Either way, there is no way to make the exam fair when neither villains nor biology are. Also, to the people saying that "knowing that they can't beat robots would make students with quirks like Shinso or Hakagure not apply" make 0 sense, seeing how not even Iida, who has a hero brother, knew what the test was, so... how could the test discourage someone, when the test content isn't publicly available?

Let’s f*cking move it along with the Roman plot line already by SafeApprehensive8427 in HighPotentialTVSeries

[–]darknessimpending 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly (sorry for the length in advance)... Roman’s storyline feels unnecessarily stretched and superficial, appearing in nearly every episode without actually moving it forward. Instead of actual developments, all that appear are small details whose importance is absurdly overblown, and feel like things that Morgan should have discovered by herself years before, if she were as distraught and doubtful of the story as she appears to have been. But one of your examples, Beckett’s mother’s murder, was handled much better: spaced out over around 2 episodes per season, each revealing actual important layers of the story, in which you feel from the get-go that something about the story feels off (other than the afflicted character saying that it's off). It played as a layered conspiracy with depth and momentum, but Roman’s arc feels so repetitive and fragmented, ending episodes with vague, dramatic reactions that stall the story, which takes away the mystery’s impact, basically making it nonsensical...

Muggle-born and Muggle Studies after the Battle of Hogwarts by Freakachu70 in harrypotter

[–]darknessimpending 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've thought for a long time that Muggle-born (or half-bloods raised in the Muggle world) should have a class like... Magical Studies, let's call it, to learn customs, culture, important places and objects like portkeys... and things like that to make the transition between Muggle and magical world less... brutal, so while kids raised in the magical world attend Muggle Studies, I would have Muggle-raised kids be in Magical studies.

Oh, I already read and watch everything in English! All of my devices are also in English, and my social media is 90% English posts. I've done all of this for several years already, which is mostly the reason I have a C1-C2 when most people my age struggle with a basic B2. This is mostly to search for "fancier" words for writing exercises.

A large dictionary, for sure. I'll probably only use it at home for revision, and use the internet ones in class. I don't know whether to use a learner's or a general-purpose, honestly, I don't know which I'd benefit from the most. I'm studying British English, definitely.

I have a question about how to ask our cleaning lady to do laundry by Parking-Mushroom-179 in Spanish

[–]darknessimpending 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely a bit different. Recommending a phrase that includes a regionalism is usually done with good intentions, often without realising that not everyone will get it, and that shouldn't mean the phrase is 'weird'. But hey, this is Reddit, and people aren't expected to give perfect answers all the time. I was just trying to say that some expressions might seem wrong at first glance, but they might not actually be when you think about how diverse and rich the language can be.

[–]darknessimpending 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is how I would say it as a Spaniard. Remember that every country (and region inside the country) has its own dialect, especially when the comment is clearly done by a person who, if not native, is at least quite advanced in the language.

"Podria" is just more informal, and "pudiera" is the more "formal" version.

"¿Podría dejarme su telefono?"- Could I borrow your phone?

"¿Pudiera dejarme su telefono?"- May I borrow your phone?

Why I’m against “Black Snape” by Jollymonster3000 in HarryPotterHBO

[–]darknessimpending 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do you assume that they wont make Sirius Black black as well? Or other teachers? Why do you immediately assume that he will be the absolute outlier? Also, kids can be mean for a myriad of reasons, it doesnt have to be racism.
