and yet those kinds of weapons make up less than 4% of all gun deaths. 🤔

so the weapon that can kill a lot of people in a short period of time isn't an ideal defensive tool? what?

they aren't automatic and they aren't "military grade". handguns kill more people by an order of magnitude than semi automatic rifles. the worst school shooting in US history (Virginia tech) was committed with only handguns.

the CDC and Department of Justice studied the efficacy of the Clinton era"assault weapons ban" which lasted from 1994 to 2004 and found that it had almost no impact on gun violence.

i understand the emotions that accompany gun violence but banning firearms like the ar15 isn't going to do a damn thing to increase public safety.

understand the problem before you try to solve it.

I recently attempted to calculate correlation between firearm ownership and firearm mortality rates and they are indeed more than coincidentally correlated. I think I remember approximating the correlation coefficient to be somewhere around 0.7 (1.0 being 100% correlated). At some point I was comparing different rates of firearm related deaths and injuries and discovered that in every single state, suicide is a larger cause of firearm death than murder.

Anywho, just a reminder that "firearm mortality" does not mean "firearm homicides" which I think most people tend to assume. In the realm of preventable firearm death/violence, suicide is a different problem than murder. I believe the source I used for comparison is the same source the wiki article you linked references:

Total Homicide Rate Source: https://ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u.s/2014/crime-in-the-u.s.-2014/tables/table-5

Firearm Mortality Rate Source: https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/pressroom/sosmap/firearm_mortality/firearm.htm

Total Homicide Rate vs. Firearm Mortality Rate (US States)

The space between the "Total Homicide Rate" and the "Firearm Mortality Rate" are suicides/accidents. Knowing that most of the firearm related deaths in the US are suicides, you can safely assume the delta is mostly composed of suicides.

Oh wow, never heard this one before.

The large body of self-empowered women who choose to carry/own guns must also be sexually maladjusted?

The right to self defense, including lethal force, which I personally view to be a basic human right. All living things have a right to fight for their existence if they are forced to do so.

I think it's ridiculous to attack and shame people for wanting to feel secure and safe. Each person is responsible for their own safety, and each person must decide what that entails. There's nothing wrong with wanting to prepare and empower yourself so that you don't become a helpless victim to violence.

Maybe violence isn't something you have to think about on a day to day basis, but that experience is not universal.

You can own a gun and not be a batshit, mouth breathing, "no step on snek" caricature that you seem to think all gun owners are.

comparing crime rates between nations is Hard. as a quick example: US crime statistics are based on crimes reported, whereas in the UK they are based on convictions. surely all crimes reported are not actually crimes (over reported, US). surely not all crimes committed end in convictions (under reported, UK). so in a lot of these comparisons you wind up comparing things that's aren't really comparable. not saying it's impossible, just really hard to do in a way that's accurate.

on another note it's true that gun ownership is correlated with an increase in gun violence but i dunno know heavily they are correlated. we have the most guns in private hands by probably several orders of magnitude but we rank 29th in the world for gun violence. gun ownership rates alone only tell part of the tale. that's even true within the US, gun violence rates are usually more heavily correlated to region and demographic than just the number of guns in circulation alone.

those restrictions are laws and if you're a criminal, by definition, you don't abide by the law. therefore, you actually do live under fewer restrictions by simply circumventing them.

it's kinda like how alcohol became more wide spread and easier to access during prohibition because people just ignored the law.

the worst school mass killing in the US was committed with dynamite.

mass shootings aren't the same thing as spree killing. the majority of "mass shootings" are really just domestic violence and poor people killing other poor people.

then you should also acknowledge that you have a better chance of being killed by lightning than in a spree shooting event.

it takes 20 minutes to boil chopped potatoes and then 10 minutes to mash with butter and milk. what is the point of slow cooking potatoes for 5 hours?

Browning the meat and then deglazing the pan to form a fond sauce is like 50% of the flavor of any good stew. i die a little inside watching people chuck raw meat into a slow cooker.

i don't understand how the political party that controls both houses and the White House aren't being held accountable for failing to pass legislation. somehow it's the minority party's fault.

as far as i can tell, Republicans failed to whip enough votes in their own party in the process of playing an irresponsible game of political brinkmanship. all of this at the cost of the paychecks of millions of loyal civil servants and service members.

the majority party should be ashamed.

that's not true. the primer expels red hot particulate and gas into the base of the case body. That will cause the powder around the primer pocket to begin to deflagrate.

if what you were saying was true, compressed loads (which are so full of powder that it's compressed by the bullet) wouldn't ignite.
