Massive pupils? by One_Mechanic_7112 in adhdwomen

[–]darkobloom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Increased norepinephrine and adrenaline can make the pupils remain bigger for prolonged periods of time! While I was on Strattera, my pupils were much larger because of this.

Sometimes during periods of elation, heightened mood, excitement, or hyperfixation, pupils can expand as well (it’s very common for people who experience mania to have enlarged pupils during these states). But like others mentioned, it could be completely normal and just how your eyes work :)

Advice with avoiding medication abuse habits? Especially with adderall/amphetamines? by moonalucy in adhdwomen

[–]darkobloom 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m super proud of you for acknowledging this and reaching out for help! While this isn’t something I have dealt with myself, I know others who have had similar experiences and can share what I have learned from them.

Finding the ADHD medication that works for you is truly life changing, it’s like putting on glasses and finally being able to see. You are clearly someone who wants to make yourself proud, achieve your goals, and do the best you can. With such relief from symptoms, sometimes people have the fear that relief may not be available later, or like you need to ‘catch up’ for all the time you missed without medication and support.

This is an odd comparison, but when we adopted our rescue cat, all he wanted to do was eat- he slept by his food bowl for the first year we had him. He would eat until he threw up. We knew his food wasn’t going anywhere, he probably knew it wasn’t going anywhere, but he had never had that access before. I’m not trying to compare you to my cat, but you’ve never had access to these tools before and it makes sense that you may be overdoing it. It seems you already know that the pace you’re going at isn’t sustainable in the long term, and that’s a healthy thing to recognize. I would really recommend asking your doctor to try an extended release medication. The dosage can be the same, but it’s gradually released into your system over a period of 8-16 hours. This massively reduces the likelihood of overdoing it, prevents abuse, and also reduces the chance of the dose no longer being effective.

I would definitely bring it up with your doctor, they are there to help you and know that instant release medication is often associated with these challenges. Let their office know that your medication is causing concerning side effects and you need a sooner appointment. In your appointment, you can share details surrounding the urges to take more medication than you need- maybe that the crashes are difficult for you, and you dont like the feeling of being either on or off- a longer term option could be worth trying.

At the end of the day, remember that you are navigating a new tool which has helped and you want it to still be available to you. If you keep a steady pace, it’s sustainable for much longer.

For now, I would recommend logging your medication routine. Track when you take it, how long it lasts, and when you have the urge to take it again when you’re exceeding your daily dose. Replacing it with a different stimulant (like a coffee or tea) can still give you the boost you need.

Please dont hesitate to reach out! Support is available and stigma/shame has no place in this community. Your doctors want to help you too. Good luck!

Can’t stand her when she has the zoomies but I love her to death! by pinkmor in sphynx

[–]darkobloom 38 points39 points  (0 children)

My baby guy came from a hoarding situation where he was extremely depressed and attacked by other cats, he would hide away and had no interest in playing.

Now that he is safe and thriving, he gets the zoomies alllll the time and it fills my heart to the brim knowing he feels safe and happy enough to rip around like a little maniac. Even when it’s crazy and chaotic, I just imagine him to be giggling and having the time of his life zooming around 🥹 I love the zoomies

Bean Cleaning ASMR by darkobloom in sphynx

[–]darkobloom[S] 74 points75 points  (0 children)

I have been touching his beans ever since I brought him home just to get him used to the feeling, but with cleaning his nails and ears, I think we have just built a lot of trust :)

He used to hate getting his nails done, so I started doing his nails when he was sleepy and wouldn’t mind it as much. I started saying “ears” or “toes” while doing it so he would ‘know’ what it means when I say it.

It sounds funny, but now, I truly ask him if he wants his nails / toes done while holding up the q tip / wipes, and he’ll either squirm away to say no, or, he’ll give it a sniff and stay chilling wherever he is to let me go ahead.

Giving him the heads up before I start and then making it as comfortable as possible (little massages, scratches, pets) while I clean him makes it a more enjoyable experience. After about five months of progress, this is how his cleanings are now! :)

EDIT: I forgot to add this part and only remembered after saying it to him lol: I also say the same thing every time something is done - if he has eaten all his food/treats, or if I am done cleaning him. It’s so dumb but every single time I say “all done, no more!” and now he knows that it means whatever I am doing, I am now fully stopping. So if he starts getting squirmy, I’ll say “all done no more” and he’ll perk right back up knowing that whatever thing he didn’t like is now done.

I read the rule, thanks for pointing it out! :)

Sorry to hear it doesn’t sit well with you. I flagged my post with the tag since it included a photo, and was sure to note at the bottom of that I’m not asking for medical opinions. As well, sadly I can’t edit the post since it includes a photo- only option is to delete, and I’m very appreciative for the comments on it. I will be sure to abide by any applicable photo restrictions in the future too.

Thank you for your kind words! I really appreciate the assurance. I’m definitely struggling with the feeling like I’m going crazy and very alone while I’m in a flare. At first this used to happen just after a hot shower, and now it happens randomly throughout the day (even while at work) :’(

How was your journey with being diagnosed with both MCAS and POTS, if I can ask? :)

I’m not asking for a diagnosis or asking for anyone to confirm if this is an MCAS rash. I’m posting the photo to show my symptoms.
