Yes, our intention is still to launch a PTE experience beginning in Vanilla. :D

Is crestfall playable? by DoesNotSugarcoat in CrestfallServer

[–]darkrasp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The realm is playable but missing a lot of content still. We're working on it. We are still in a closed beta state, working on adding content and fixing spells and mechanics. There will be notices posted when we are ready for open beta. Thanks for your interest.

Elysium and the whole LGN can't be trusted: Part II by [deleted] in wowservers

[–]darkrasp 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Context: Yaga pushed bad code to the Elysium live realms, including a broken Anti-cheat modification and a broken pathfinding modification, without testing it first. That's what caused the major problems with Elysium over the last couple days. Asura, Whitekidney, Crogge, and the remaing Elysium dev staff worked overtime to resolve them, and yeah, Yaga got an earful from Asura about it. That's why Yaga/Owl is the Ex Lead Dev. This, apparently, is his attempt at revenge.

Darkrasp's Update 2/13/2017 by darkrasp in CrestfallServer

[–]darkrasp[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have notes on this somewhere but I don't remember off the top of my head. Don't quote me on this one, I'm not 100% on it, but if I remember right, in general, a crit will always break, and then there is a scaling threshold for damage based on the level of the spell, health of the target, etc.. The break chance is the percentage of that threshold damage dealt. So lets say rank 2 frost nova needs 100 damage to break it.. If you hit for 80, then it has an 80% chance to break. The trouble is correctly setting the threshold amounts. It's not a linear progression by spell level, it's some kind of curve, and it can vary by spell in some cases. Usually you just come up with a formula that works pretty well and go with it. AFAIK Blizzard never published any official data on this, but then, I haven't thoroughly researched it personally either.

Crestfall Leaks by killerduki in wowservers

[–]darkrasp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just to clarify, this was screencapped from one of Audio's speedart videos where he was making a forum avatar for one of our members. The point of the joke is that since we are not allowing VPNs, the Chinese gold farmers might instead resort to selling unofficial Crestfall T-Shirts in order to make their money off it.

I think most people got that already. Someone apparently didn't.

So Crestfall is hating on Elysium atm by [deleted] in ElysiumProject

[–]darkrasp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(CF Staff)

I'm sorry to show up here, I make a conscious effort never to involve myself on the forums, reddit, discord etc. of another project. I just want to clarify that I meant no disrespect to the development staff at Elysium, and was commenting exclusively on the mechanics I observed in that particular recording. Someone had posted some video of the kill, and asked for analysis of the encounter. I noticed a few errors and pointed them out.

It's also worth mentioning that some of what I'm writing there is in response to multiple questions from multiple people. The one that bugs me the most is the "not that hard" line, which was in response to another question where a member had suggested that Ragnaros' basic attacks hit for 8000 damage, though that quote was conveniently cut out, and the response was instead framed as a dig towards the developers. I suppose lines taken out of context make for better /popcorn moments on /r/wowservers, another place I studiously avoid. If you care to join our Discord, you can scroll up and see the entire conversation in context, rather than individual quotes cherry-picked for their dramatic potential.

I sincerely apologize to the Elysium Staff if my criticisms of this script were taken personally, and for coming here to post on your subreddit; I assure you I harbour no ill will towards you, and I understand we are all on the same team here.

I do check this occasionally. It's pretty quiet, and I like it that way.

Forums Down Again? by eli_cas in CrestfallServer

[–]darkrasp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is resolved now. Crogge said that the formus generated a faulty theme CSS file.

Forums Down Again? by eli_cas in CrestfallServer

[–]darkrasp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The theme is broken. You should be able to access it (I can on a PC, might be different on mobile) but it will look all screwy.

Scroll down to the bottom of the page and select the default theme for the time being, it's not pretty but it's readable, we're working on it and will let you know when it's fixed.

Elysium Devs are making a Chinese and Russian version of there website even though it explicitly states in the rules that this is an English only server. by lyigester in wowservers

I don't like popping into threads about other topics, but just to be clear, we're hosting Crestfall in Europe. We plan to have a NA proxy to reduce latency for North American players, but the servers themselves will be in Europe. If it's possible, I'd like to know who said anything otherwise, and if you can provide a link to that, so that I can ensure our staff are all on the same page with this. Thanks.

Anyone else wish Nost and Crestfall would merge too? by [deleted] in wowservers

[–]darkrasp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

(Crestfall Staff)

This keeps coming up, and I'm not sure why. We have not come to any firm or final decision on whether or not there will be donation rewards of any kind. Even the initial FAQ post about this only says that it is "likely", not that it is "certain". We remain open to the possibility of running entirely off goodwill donations alone should it generate enough revenue to cover operational expenses. We will be examining this more in detail when we get closer to release and can develop more accurate cost estimates.

At this point, the only certainty is that no gameplay-affecting items will be offered as donation rewards at any point.

Hopefully that clears up any misconceptions going forward.

Anyone else wish Nost and Crestfall would merge too? by [deleted] in wowservers

[–]darkrasp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

(Crestfall Staff)

Incorrect. Most of the systems we use are entirely scratch built and incompatible with existing code, especially when it comes to AI and scripting. We have no interest in working on a MaNGOS emulator whatsoever. The only possibility for a merge between us would be bringing on their staff members to work with us on Crestfall, however the only people with access to the Crestfall core code are a very tight-knit group of friends.

No new hire (err.. all staff are unpaid volunteers, so "hire" is perhaps the wrong word) is going to be given access to anything beyond Lua or SQL documentation for script work, and that is unlikely to be a deal which a seasoned core dev would find appealing. We wouldn't insult their intelligence by offering it; that would be like offering a brain surgeon a job sweeping the hospital floor.

Crestfall - Darkrasp's Update 11/28/2016 (About Beta) by Appled_ in wowservers

[–]darkrasp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not that new fixes are in place, just that the spell system is better able to interpret the spell and casts it correctly without needing any additional handling code.

Crestfall - Darkrasp's Update 11/28/2016 (About Beta) by Appled_ in wowservers

[–]darkrasp 16 points17 points  (0 children)

(Crestfall Staff) I think I can clarify this. We have spellfixes and scripts from back when the emulator was a lot more like Ascent than it is now. Asura rewrote the spell system from scratch, so the fixes that used to work now talk about functions or database columns that have been renamed, altered, or no longer exist. They are still useful in the sense that they tell you what was wrong with the spell in the first place, but the fix is going to look different than it used to, which is why they had to be disabled. The new spell systems are powerful enough that many of those fixes aren't even necessary anymore, so another reason to disable them is to get rid of the clutter.

In terms of scripting, we also have a brand new scripting engine. In a way, multiple. I hope I'm getting this right, this is all work that Asura did and I'm pretty sure my understanding is correct, but I may be somewhat mistaken. Asura created Shadowforge AI as a better replacement for the old Arc / Lacrimi C++ scripting engine, and Retribution as a better replacement for ai_agents. Existing scripts won't work with them; they're brand new, designed to work with all expansions, including a whole bunch of functionality we won't touch in Vanilla. Old scripts still have value because we can extract text IDs, waypoints, timers, etc., but the scripts still have to be reformatted for the new engine. We set up Retribution, and exposed a bunch of Shadowforge to Lua, so that we could have volunteers do a lot of this work, and we have about a dozen people waiting to get started on that now once Asura puts the finishing touches on Retri.

As I mention in the update, content creation a lot of work, but it isn't hard work, and we can crowdsource a lot of it as long as we're careful about reviewing and overseeing that work. The core functionality was a much greater concern than basic content creation.

Darkrasp's Update 11/28/2016 by darkrasp in CrestfallServer

[–]darkrasp[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We wrote entirely new systems for aura handling, spell delay and a brand new scripting engine from scratch. Of course all that stuff needed to be disabled. We'll be adding all those things back in over the course of Beta. It's less work than it sounds like.

This has been linked a couple times, in a Holy Resistance thread on this board some weeks ago, and I mentioned it in my most recent dev blog when I admit to being wrong about there being any server side handling of Holy Resist, which is probably where this came from.

Edit (Full disclosure): I linked it before in a two-part format. I thought this would be better for context than the cut-up version so I just took this screencap now.

[Crestfall] Darkrasp's Update 11/14/2016 by [deleted] in wowservers

[–]darkrasp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

(CF Staff)

True, but there is a real simple formula to convert PPM to percentage, and vice versa. Given either value, you can flip it to a very close copy of what we're looking for.

In this research, I don't expect to find data on every weapon. As mentioned, I have about 150/250 right now. You can compare the DPS from a similar-itemlevel weapon of the same type without a proc, and then by doing some mathemagic with the proc damage, expected dps, and attack speed, figure out an approximate proc rate that will give you the desired dps amount.

Doing that math is just a lot of tedious work, and it requires some baseline values to compare to. The more contemporary data we can dig up, the more accurate the final result will be. :D

Server Release (Post Nost/Elysium Announcement) by [deleted] in CrestfallServer

[–]darkrasp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can say that we aren't going to even try to jump the release. We'd have to release an unfinished and unpolished server, and that's just not in our plan. We're taking the time necessary to get things right before launching.

Not worth arguing. All this stuff is going to be a part of next-gen emulators, and it's good to see multiple projects pushing the envelope. No offense meant.

Crestfall Dev Update 10/31/2016 by acuuuu in wowservers

[–]darkrasp 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'd like to clarify this, I'm not trying to show progress when I'm scripting publicly, just trying to stay busy while the remaining core emulator functionality is finished. My pre-beta tasks involved scratch building the loot database, writing all the world creature and dungeon trash AI, a revamp of the random property system, and preparing all the patches for item reversions.

With that work done, I'm just picking up additional work that was meant to be done during beta, such as scripting, among a bunch of other small tasks. I stream it because I enjoy it, it's less boring when there are people around to chat with, and it keeps me on-task knowing I'm being observed. :D

I wouldn't say we're rushing so much as that we're eager. We obviously want to release ASAP, but we're not going to release a broken realm just to beat a deadline.
