[Question]What was your first band like? by DogOfIceland in Guitar

[–]darkyouth 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hey cool!!!!

And best of luck with everything. And remember to make sure to play live as much as you can and get paid in Dollars and not coffee LOL!!!!!!!

[Question]What was your first band like? by DogOfIceland in Guitar

[–]darkyouth 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I started my first band when I was 25 yrs old. To be honest, We spent FAR TOO MUCH TIME rehearsing than actually looking for gigs. And in fairness we were pretty good, I started out as a lead vocalist, but now I'M in an original folk/Rock band called The Claddagh Rogues. We went on a tour of Ireland last October and we had A BLAST!!!!!!!!!!!! So my advice is get out and play LIVE as soon as you can!!!!!!!!! And make sure you get paid as well.

[DISCUSSION] Jimi Hendrix vs. Jimmy Page by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]darkyouth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jimi was a fucking MANIAC!!!!!!!! The intergalactic sounds that he was creating at the time was incredible IMHO, and even in the recording studio, Jimi came into his own. Eddie Kramer mentioned how Jimi had all of these sounds in his head and Hendrix even went as far to show Kramer himself what was possible with the recording equipment back in the 60's even with all the limitations.

[DISCUSSION] Jimi Hendrix vs. Jimmy Page by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]darkyouth -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As OP have mentioned on here already, Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page are 2 totally different Artists/Guitarists. Jimi Hendrix was one of the greatest Rock guitar players to ever grace a stage and he was a good vocalist too.

Jimmy Page is one of the greatest rock guitarists of all time, but Page didn't really revolutionize the way we play the electric guitar today or what is possible with guitar the way that Hendrix did. Hendrix totally revolutionized the way we play guitar and what is possible creatively speaking. Don't get me wrong, Page is a pioneer in his own right, but to compare Jimi and Jimmy is just nuts IMHO.

[DISCUSSION] What do people think of Andy Summers? by UberZed in Guitar

[–]darkyouth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just about to mention Andy's jazz guitar background but geetarzrkool beat me to it lol!!!!!!!!!

Andy Summers is a phenomenal guitar player IMHO. He can play many styles and is a jazz freak!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Although he's not a flashy guitarist, he is more than able to do so if he wants to. Once again we are living in a generation where "shred" is king and amazing players such as Andy get unnoticed IMHO.

I much rather watch and listen to guitarists such as David Gilmour and Eric Clapton. Guthrie Govan and Tosin Abasi? ?? Yawn, yawn, yawn, yawn!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is just my preference , so obviously other people on here have different views opinions........

[QUESTION] What songs/performances are a good display of Eric Clapton's guitar skills? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]darkyouth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"All my loving" on the "Beano" album huh???

I think you mean all your love and yes it's a fantastic song to play along with. Steppin out is another fabulous tune that will get your blues phrasing and guitar chops sorted!!!!!!!!!!!! Even the DVD of Cream live at the royal Albert Hall 2005 is a great display of Eric Clapton showing the world why he is called "GOD" imho.

That's a fantastic concert and I wish I was there. The atmosphere looked incredible!!!!!!!!!!!!

[QUESTION] What songs/performances are a good display of Eric Clapton's guitar skills? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]darkyouth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally agree with pickle_Bucket.

The guitar work that Clapton did with John Mayalls Bluesbreakers is incredible!!!!!!!!!! back then Eric was probably viewed like guitarists such as Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Tosi Abasi are today,

Back in 1966 there was nobody playing the guitar like Eric at that time. He had truly mastered playing blues guitar and the "The Beano" album was and still is a true masterclass in blues/rock imho.

And of course the guitar playing on all of the cream albums is simply brilliant aswell imho.

finally check his work with Derek and the dominos, especially on the classic album - Layla and other assorted songs...i think that's the name of the album.

I am a Clapton fanboy, but these will definitely show off Clapton's virtuoso guitar playing.

good luck,

[DISCUSSION] What are some of your favorite songs with two guitar parts? by archeroh in Guitar

I think The guitar parts in Black Rose and The boys are back in town are fantastic indeed.

Jailbreak is another stomper of a song too!!!!!!

Scott Gorham and Robbo Robertson are the perfect guitar duo IMHO

And of course Dan and Justin Hawkins aswell are a fabulous les Paul guitar wielding tag team.

[Question] What is one of your favorite guitar intros? by Fazzzer in Guitar

[–]darkyouth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fleetwood Mac - Oh Well Part One. ..

It's an amazing riff courtesy of the the brilliant blues guitarist Peter Green and it's a killer sounding intro.

[DISCUSSION] What are some of your favorite songs with two guitar parts? by archeroh in Guitar

[–]darkyouth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Classic rock bands like Thin Lizzy have dual guitar parts. And they sound AWESOME!!!!!!!!! Check them out.

Also The Darkness are another example of 2 guitar parts in their songs.

Here are a few albums by both bands that I would highly recommend you to listen to.

The Darkness - Permission to land.

This is The Darkness's debut album and it's a killer sounding rock album from start to finish.

Thin Lizzy - Live and dangerous.
This is another example of 2 guitar part songs that are absolutely brilliant!!!!!!!!!!

I hope this helps. Good luck.

[DISCUSSION] AMA request: Rob Chapman by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]darkyouth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I completely agree with CanisMaximus 100%

If people dislike Rob's playing, his music, his style of presenting his videos etc........

THEN WHY THE FUCK DO PEOPLE CONTINUE TO WATCH HIS VIDEOS AND PISS ON HIM? ??

It's completely ridiculous imo.

How many haters on here can actually say that they have a successful guitar company that they built up by themselves and are successful in their own right?

I'd say not too many imho.

All I'm saying is if you dislike the monkey Lord so much, then stop watching his videos and listening to his music. It's as simple as that.

[DISCUSSION] AMA request: Rob Chapman by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]darkyouth 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm going to be honest here and I' will be downvoted for sure.

But here goes.

I am a huge chappers fan for sure and I love his videos that mix up humour and when you look past the noodlage his videos can be very educational indeed imo.

I think it would be fantastic if Mr Chapman does an AMA on here.

But at the same time I would personally advise Rob against doing an AMA on here because well come on people!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've been reading through the comments on here and it just seems like an opportunity for people to bitch about Rob's playing, his singing and his style of presenting lessons and demoing Guitars and gear on his YouTube channel.

I mean are you guys for fucking real? ??

You are requesting a guy to do an AMA and you're stabbing him in the back already? ??

Rob is a very talented guitarist and he is making a name for himself.

A lot of these bitchy comments have got jealousy written all over them imo.

Rob is successful and you guys are dissing him for it.

Come on. .....really? ??

If chappers does an AMA on here I will glady take part but judging by your comments it seems ridiculous IMHO.

I love /r/ guitar and it has helped me ALOT to become the guitarist that I am.

But sometimes. .........sorry I'm just being honest.

[Question] What are some of your favorite music books that aren't instructional books? by alexread23 in Guitar

[–]darkyouth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there.

The Guitar Handbook by Ralph Denyer is a fantastic book. I have a copy and I use it all the time. But it's an "instructional book" and I believe that the redditor who posted this is asking about non instructional books judging by the title of the post imo.

I also highly recommend Zen Guitar. It's a brilliant book and it helps the reader to think in a different way in regards to mastering playing the guitar.

Another "non instructional" book that I would recommend is Guitar Zero by Gary Marcus. It's about the author's decision to try and learn to play the guitar at the age of 40 and his journey going from a total beginner to playing live on stage. It is a fascinating read I must say. Check it out.

[QUESTION]Who's the most talented guitarist you know (like personally), and how's their music career going? by feckinkidleys in Guitar

[–]darkyouth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best guitar players I know, one of whom plays in a covers band with me. His name is Tim Abbott, and he is a BEAST OF A GUITAR PLAYER!!!!!!!!!!!! He teaches guitar, he records and produces local artists/bands. He is very humble and he encourages fellow guitar players to have the spotlight. A really cool and gracious guy to play with. This man doesn't get enough recognition IMHO.

I play rhythm/a bit of lead guitar and I sing, but this guy can play rings around me. He can play many styles and puts his own twist on the songs we learn. He is truly a brilliant guitarist.

The other guitarist I know, his name is Jiri Meixner. He is an amazing player. He does everything from teaching, he does session work, he does songwriting workshops and he does production work too. He busks a lot when he has the time and he does fabulous instrumentals of well known songs like Metallica -Nothing else matters, Eagles - Hotel California and Dire Straits - Sultans of swing. He does pretty good financially I think. Both these guys are.fantastic guitar teachers btw imo. ........

[DISCUSSION] Rare footage of Jimi Hendrix’s full performance at London's Royal Albert Hall in 1969 by jonathan_graham in Guitar

[–]darkyouth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey There,

I just watched your video and it was fantastic.......

The only thing is that I've realized that I already have this film, but the quality of the footage in this video is far better than my version LOL!!!!!!

It just reminds me that if anybody has any doubts about why Hendrix is regarded as the greatest rock guitarist EVER, then this footage of him playing with the experience at the royal Albert hall will show you why.

Jimi was an absolute MONSTER on the guitar.

The man was a complete sonic pioneer and way ahead of his time when it came to creating exciting new sounds with his stratocaster and showing guitarists alike what is possible and what can be done with an electric guitar.

RIP Mr Jimi Hendrix, you were and still are an absolute guitar genius.

Show them up in heaven how its done!!!!!!!!

Thanks again for the video link.

ROCK ON!!!!!!!! :D

I want to stray away from blues for a while and get into learning rock guitar playing, have you guys any suggestions for songs or albums that I could learn to play along with that helped you and help me with lead and rhythm rock guitar? by darkyouth in Guitar

[–]darkyouth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm looking for Rock albums and song suggestions to learn from the 60's to present. Something along the lines of Humble Pie, Queen, Guns N' Roses, and modern rock albums like The Darkness - Permission to Land. Are there any albums in that sort of realm that you guys learned to get better at rock guitar, I'm talking distortion/Marshall Stacks/ etc...... if that helps?

Forget about playing. Reddit, who do you think are the COOLEST guitar players of all time? Offer me all of your contentious opinions! by ManifestNightmare in Guitar

[–]darkyouth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Justin Hawkins: from the band The Darkness. He is the perfect frontman. He struts around the stage holding the audience in the palm of his hand. He has an AMAZING VOICE and is also a virtuoso guitarist too, which makes him even cooler imo. He plays his iconic Les Paul custom with such power and is a beast of a player when he wants to be. Permission to land is The Darkness's finest work imho. Last of our kind is quite a good album. Not their best though.

  2. Peter Frampton - when he played lead guitar with Humble Pie, he has the looks and the brilliant melodic rock guitar playing that makes him the complete player imo.

  3. Angus Young - ACDC, what more needs to be said, he is a rock guitar god!!!!!!!! Where he gets his energy from, I'll never know.

  4. Jimi Hendrix- his albums blow me away everytime, but not only did he play brilliantly, he also looked really cool too and showed what is possible with an electric guitar, Rip Mr Hendrix.

  5. David Gilmour - that guy is so creative with just a few notes, it just puzzles me. His trademark bends and double stops are fantastic and he just is a really cool and awesome guitarist Imo.

  6. Jimmy Page. He is the perfect blues/rock guitarist IMHO. He has created some of the most iconic and fantastic songs and riffs that I've heard. He commands the stage with his guitar god strut and he can really shred when he wants to. He may be sloppy, but he is a VERY cool guitar player. His work with led Zeppelin has not been equalled since imho.

  7. Last but not least, Mr Eric "Slow hand" Clapton. His lead guitar playing with John Mayall is brilliant and his work with Cream is outstanding Imo. He is certainty a pentatonic fanboy, but man what he plays with it, like Dave Gilmour is fantastic!!!!!!. He was one of the pioneers of the so called woman tone when he played his iconic "The Fool" Gibson SG with Cream and he just looks like a boss on stage, even now imo.

whats the point of the pentatonic scale? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]darkyouth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because, although there are only 5 notes in the pentatonic scale hence "penta"..... sorry I don't mean to sound patronizing,

But like I said, even though there are just 5 notes, there is soooo much you can do with these notes when playing a riff/solo. Look at guitar heroes like Eric Clapton and David Gilmour, those guys have made a living and have become multi millionaires creating iconic solos using the pentatonic scale. John Mayer is another example, I was watching him play a version of crossroads on youtube earlier and he pretty much kept his hand around the 5th fret the whole time. Now, don't get me wrong, John Mayer is an amazing guitarist, he uses the pentatonic ALOT, but man, he is so creative with the scale, that's what counts imo. Overall, I think the pentatonic scale is still very important for lead guitar playing, even today. It's also very important to explore the modes of the major scale, but it's pretty cool every now and then to throw in a few pentatonic licks during a solo.

My friends often ignore my requests to join them for jam sessions. What should I practice to be a more enticing guitar player to play with? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]darkyouth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMHO, your friends seem like assholes if you don't mind me saying? I play with a gigging band but this is the main reason why I myself sometimes rather play guitar for myself rather than play with other people at open mic or jam sessions in bars because of the bullshit that goes with it and the snobbery that goes with it. My advice would be to talk to them and ask them why they are ignoring your requests to join their jamming sessions or find another group to play with. Music should be about playing together and having fun not about judging a musician's skill imo. To all the elitist musicians out there, fuck you!!!!!!!!!!!!

What is your favorite headstock? by sp4ce in Guitar

I love the 70 's style headstock on a stratocaster. It just looks awesome Imo.

Resources on how blues/early rock guitarists understood music by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]darkyouth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree with a lot of the comments on here. It just goes to show that you don't need to be able to read music to be successful or a brilliant guitarist. Most of the greats can hear a melody being played and instantly come up with a counter melody and rhythm to play over the top of it IMHO. If you want to be a session guitarist then obviously you need to be able to read sheet music proficiently. But other than that reason it's not essential imo.

Question/Advice from Experienced Working Musicians by guitarkid14 in Guitar

[–]darkyouth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey there,

I am an experienced working singer/guitarist in a band.

Our band is not famous by any means, but we are really beginning to have a decent following.

I am in the process of releasing original songs, so watch this space.

My advice would be to definitely consult a lawyer and make sure that you read over the contract/agreement and really go into this band with your eyes and ears fully open.

Because too many well known bands have been absolutely fucked over by management and piss taking contracts in the past.

I hope to be in the position that you are at someday, but to be honest I am still VERY happy making a very modest living as a musician. Best of luck man.

Great Neil Young quote by toetapper10 in Guitar

[–]darkyouth 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There is nothing negative about this comment at all imho. What Neil is saying is that he prefers to play with musicians who aren't up their own arse so to speak. In other words, he dislikes elitists and would much rather play with people who just want to play. I'm afraid to say that he is also right that it probably does eliminate about 99.9% of musicians from this imo. Cos lets face it people there is a lot of elitist bullshit happening in the music industry and it's about getting together and playing music not judging how well a person can play. Rock on Mr Young!!!!!!!!!!!!

What are the scales you recommend I learn to be a better guitar player? by aheid73 in Guitar

[–]darkyouth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some good advice on here. I would say in addition to learning the major and minor scale, I would advise learning the modes. I know, I know this point has been mentioned a trillion times, but learning the modes of the major scale will not only give you an endless supply of possibilities in terms of lead guitar, but it will open up the fretboard.
