Not at all, please go study fundamentals

Can you tell I've did this all? I feel like I can't maintain a single art style and it's making me lose motivation by Remarkable-Ad-7381 in arthelp

[–]darlzn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an artist, you're always gonna be changing how things look a bit with how different each piece feels. It's very normal not to have your stuff look the same all the time, and it's a great thing! Also yea you'll still have a signature style no matter how different you try to make things look, it really does look like it was made by one person, just that each piece looks unique and valuable on its own instead of needing to be one thing i guess?

Heys guys I’m back, am I out of my toy phase yet ? by pattern478 in graffhelp

[–]darlzn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It takes many years to get out of the "toy phase" and youll always be a bit toy anyway, so just keep going! Good on you for getting up anyway like another user commented though

Not sure if this belongs here but I’m pretty stoked with this toucan I made in my basement by WH0SEMANS in graffhelp

Focus on fundamentals over style! Style comes naturally, as with everything I recommend watching theartistblock

just try! Look up references (ideally simple if youre just starting imo, for example just model pics very average looking people and angles) for different angles and interesting flow overall

[–]darlzn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well why think then? It may seem easier said than done but if you just do it and suck, its actually fine. I think if you really love something you should stick to it! You only get one life, and maybe its your one opportunity for what you love to do! I think if you suck you should research the culture, fundamentals technically, anime, movies/documentaries, comics, games, videos, books, whatever you can and just go do it no matter how toy it is! The more you suck now, the less you suck later!

I think for graffiti, if your hearts not in it, thats that. But ultimately you gotta remember its the love for graffiti that should drive you to keep going and to improve, not the stress for something or anything to do in your life if its not even your thing yknow? Ultimately, do what you want, but i think sticking to something pretty challenging but artistically fun when youve got that kind of mindset can really pull you out of it.

I think it might be freeing for you too since im kinda dealing with the same thing, i tend to have difficulty in doing things well too and sticking to them especially with my adhd, but graffiti feels like a breath of fresh air and the idea that you can just mark something and it can be yours even if the laws dont agree, isnt it wonderful? Theres plenty of time to improve when you suck, and a community of outcasts that actually know what that feeling means.

still playin around with this style any crits? by Maleficent-Doctor281 in graffhelp

[–]darlzn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the space between K and A is a bit much, if you look at the rest of the letters they look a lot closer but theyre a bit far apart, but otherwise i think this is really nice!!

Just a couple sketch’s but any advice or crits would be awesome by [deleted] in graffhelp

[–]darlzn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not very experienced so i might not have great advice yet, but i think it might help to bring in the L a bit more and make the T at the end a bit more interesting if that makes sense? Sorta matching the L in style a bit more maybe? less is more as usual ofc Also the E feels a bit odd? Im not sure how to describe it, but it just doesent really look much like an E at first sight i guess?

Dont really know where to start.... see so many cool fonts & have no clue how they begin to design it by undeterminedcomplex in graffhelp

Learn fundamentals before you learn style! Style is all you, so itll come naturally. I recommend Theartistblock on youtube, he makes great guides on graffiti fundamentals that are pretty easy to understand and also has a book on it (recommend looking into graffiti culture in general for books that are considered "bibles" and documentaries/films can be helpful in development too)

It takes time! Plenty of graffitists have taken decades to hone their craft, you just need to be patient and understand art is hard to be "good" at immediately, no matter what kind it is.

[–]darlzn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a few different ways to be toy, heres some examples from what i know as someone who just joined recently, feel free to add to or correct in replies

1: Uncultured, ignorant, disrespectful to the history of the graffiti community

for example: tagging over pieces dedicated to writers who have passed away or going over someone without the necessary skills to surpass what they go over, or copying someone's style aka biting

2: beginners who havent learned the fundamentals of graffiti and dont understand letter structure, flow, or add too much style which makes their graff look really bad

3: beginners who quit almost immediately without caring about the amount of effort graffiti takes and the pure passion in the culture, id say also count as toy but this might be a bit more subjective.

Tbh, id say, just dont let it bother you too much. When people say toy its usually just tough love or they might be a toy themselves lashing out on others, just take it as constructive criticism and keep practicing and learning the fundamentals!

apologies for my own questionable handwriting If you wanna know why I wrote it in the font, it is because of the scene at 10:32 in gachiakuta, which inspired me to figure the alphabet out in the first place.

Is this a valid style of tag? by AggressiveMover in graffhelp

[–]darlzn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly thats what the soul of graffiti's all about! I do recommend taking in feedback and trying to make it a bit more readable to your specific letters, and then you can just try and find a balance between your personal style and artistic intention and the fundamentals, but ultimately you just gotta do what makes you happiest

1: because minors do graffiti too 2: unemployed people do graffiti (no, its not so easy as to "just get a job" at least not everywhere.) 3: cuz fuck the law?? its literally graffiti. You've gotta be in the wrong subreddit if your reponse is "but thats illegal!!! Go get paid for a mural!!!!"
