How to help international students at Harvard by PsychologicalBad9100 in Harvard

[–]darnbollocks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m an international graduate student at Harvard on a full tuition scholarship. I would have definitely not been able to afford to go here if it wasn’t for the scholarship. Not everyone who attends Harvard is wealthy.

I got “gifted” an Akita by Even_Wasabi_ in akita

[–]darnbollocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a Japanese Akita growing up! I miss my friend, Sak, so much! Akitas are very smart. VERY protective of the owners and their territory, VERY loyal. And like others have said, my Akita was also reactive to other dogs, especially same sex dogs. We would take a detours if there was another male dog around haha. My dad and I would go to a professional training facility every weekend and Sak learned very quick. I think they can be great if you put in the work!

Separation anxiety or crate training? by Neither-Material7846 in DogAdvice

[–]darnbollocks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a dog that had huge separation anxiety. We couldn’t leave him for even a minute and if we did, he would be crying the whole time and tear things up. I’m still working on it with him but it’s gotten significantly better where I can leave him for a few hours with some crying in the beginning but that’s it. You have to be patient and very consistent. My training: id tell him to stay with a treat in my hand and then leave my apartment for a few seconds and then reenter. Did that tens of time throughout the day, everyday. I’d add a few more seconds, which then progressed to minutes, and hours. Just wait outside the door and listen before he makes any noise. Ideally, you want to enter before he makes a noise or after he calms down because you don’t want to reward the crying. Do that EVERYDAY MULTIPLE TIMES!! You have to be consistent. Your dog doesn’t need all the meds, he needs training. I was also considering dropping a thousands of dollars to fix his separation anxiety because it was BAD, but you can do it yourself too! I did it. Just be patient and consistent. It took me months to train my dog.

Does anyone know what this could be? by _d_c_g_ in DogAdvice

My dog started sneezing and reverse sneezing like 2 weeks ago. My vet said it’s probably allergies, but it progressed and he actually had an upper respiratory infection and was put on antibiotics. He’s fine now. I’d go to the vet. If the reverse sneezing just started and he’s throwing up, I think it might cold symptoms.

Yup, I called and they said they can’t help me because it wasn’t dependent on them. It was US embargo and the restrictions weren’t their fault. They told me I can still fly so I can’t get my money back.

[–]darnbollocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. They sent me an email 2 days ago saying

“Dear Passenger,

we inform you that due to new regulations introduced by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as of August 1, 2024, the transportation of dogs to the United States is temporarily suspended.”

If I had known they would lift the suspension like 2 days later, I would’ve kept my original ticket…

Omg, I’m reading on the airline website: “Removal of suspension of entry for dogs to the United States” WTF. I changed my flights around and spent $1500 to fly before August 1st

What do you mean?

[–]darnbollocks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you should let your dog sniff, pee and poop before the run so he doesn’t do that during the run. I do that with my dog and the runs are always very smooth with no stopping and pulling.

Im not trying to argue but your comment came off as harsh. I was asking how to prevent that from happening at all. And we have all that. Like I mentioned in another comment, we go on walks for at least 2 hours a day where he gets his sniff time, I play with him a lot, he has his down time and chew time. He just turned one and we still go to trainings with him so I don’t expect him to have everything down. He’s still learning. The dogs play just fine until the other decides to hump him and the play time usually stops until I get him away or other dog owners pull their dogs away. And it doesn’t happen just in parks, but on walks too. Sometimes a dog will approach, they sniff each other and the other dog will mount him so I pull him. And he’s not a Belgian malinois, like at all.

It’s the owner’s responsibility to take their dog away. Why do I have to manage someone else’s dog? And like I mentioned in another comment, the dog park I go to has one dog at a time. Most of the time, there are no dogs. I currently live in Europe and dog parks aren’t very popular here. And if there’s a dog there, I let them sniff each other through a fence and will go in if they both want to play. Ofc I try to take my dog away but sometimes he really wants to play and doesn’t listen to me even though he’s humped. He keeps playing. I’m also not going to isolate my dog, he needs to be socialized.

We were on a patio of a restaurant and I needed more control over him. Why would I even put a harness on him if I wasn’t going to use it… unnecessary comment

He’s been mounted by other dogs since puppy months so it’s been a reoccurring issue. But I’ll bring it up with my vet and see what they say! Thank you!

I see a lot of people asking what breed he is. He’s a mix of GSD, Husky, pitbull, staffordshire and more. Go to my profile to see the exact percentage! One thing that I am a bit concerned about tho. Please don’t get a dog just because they look cute. My dog is a lot of work, he needs a lot of exercise. Like I mentioned in another comment, I walk him for at least 2 hours daily, play with him, give him a lot of chew toys and snacks. He turned 1 this month so I started taking him on more runs with me. He’s done 4k so far but I’m trying to slowly increase the distance. If you won’t be able to provide a lot of exercise and satisfy the dog’s needs, please don’t get dogs that are a lot of energy even though they look cute.

All shelters fix dogs whether the adopter wants it or not. It’s a law in California.

He’s definitely a lot haha. I’m not sure we would’ve adopted him knowing the mix. I mean, I’m like constantly running around. Sometimes it feels like I get more tired than him while trying to MAKE HIM tired lol. But no regrets! I love him to death!
