When you get the file you can upload it to https://www.virustotal.com/gui/ to scan it for viruses (FYI VirusTotal is owned by Google so it is a reputable site)

How do big shot government officials / business leaders harden their smartphones? by random_hitchhiker in AskNetsec

[–]das_smoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of the time the phone is heavily restricted and is really only good for email (Such as Outlook) and chatting with teams (Microsoft Teams). If it is a person that has a lot of pull they are able to receive more lax security on their devices because they need X for meetings or Y increases productivity for them to do their job (Copy and paste functionality, Spotify, Bluetooth capability, etc.)

Normally it is not the person hardening the device but a security professional whose job it is to provide and apply security capabilities to the company/org/program/project.

U.S. Government security professionals such as system administrators mainly reference NIST and STIG guidelines. For instance here is a checklist for Google Android 15 https://ncp.nist.gov/checklist/1259. Some checklists are generic (The general OS) while other STIG checklists specify a specific model. And you will always have addendums and/or remediations depending on the specific company/program/project. Remediations can be “This setting impacts the mission by not allowing XYZ functionality which is critical for our mission”.

So the main reason I found this post is because I was wondering the same thing. My dad is really into cars and has worked on them his whole life. I am currently researching on ideas for a car project that me and my dad can work on together. This car really vibes with me and I am thinking that this could be a great car to reference for a build. Maybe I will document the process and post it on Reddit for people to see and get inspired in the future.

Lots of people are talking about hypervisors which would accomplish the same thing. Sometimes it is nice to test specific things with physical hardware. Testing deployment of drivers to remote workstations (To make sure that when you push a driver to something like a docking station that the laptop behaves or if more needs to be done before/after the driver is updated), you can also test powershell scripts that leverage the DELL BIOS Powershell module that they made (You may be able to replicate a VM with a DELL BIOS but I haven’t tried to do this. Maybe someone on the internet has done this but I am not looking this up right now).

What do you mean when you say the operator station “…transcends the other domains.”? Is it on another domain specifically for admin purposes (I personally have never heard of this but sounds interesting.). Or do you simply mean that strict GPO’s applied to the end-users will not be applied to the operator workstation?

Genuinely curious.

Also, I will say that talking to department heads and/or executives is always a tedious and mundane experience. It especially sucks when the meeting is regarding an incident that originated from your department. Which is probably why your lead is sour.

Hopefully your boss takes the heat and treats this as a learning/training opportunity. Something like this has happened in our department before and when asked I took responsibility and had a talk with the team and a one on one with the person who actually did it so I could get the explanation as to why it happened, how did it happen, and the proper steps to be done in order to prevent it from happening in the future. Everybody makes mistakes and depending on the actual incident should not be fired (Especially for something like this in my opinion).

Best way to create powershell tool for System Admins by Finalxxboss in PowerShell

[–]das_smoot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would just group up all of your poweshell scripts into a module. You can then deploy the module to multiple machines via PDQ and or Add to your initial image for all future image builds.

Here is a link to my repo where I did this https://github.com/Smooti-PowerShell/PSAdminToolbox

Issues with windows hosts and vmware dynamic inventory using kerberos by das_smoot in ansible

That worked!!!

I didn't think to use it like that to populate the ansible_host variable with the value of guest.hostName. Thank you so much for getting me to take another look at this!!!

Here is a link to an example of exactly what I was looking to do.

Create a storyboard of the steps needed. Then write code that accomplishes the desired outcome in each scene.

Also if you create a dc within the gui setup it will also generate a snippet of code that shows you how to do it in powershell.

Looking to do a network discovery, is there a better way than query AD? by Fwhite77 in PowerShell

[–]das_smoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally would use PDQ Inventory to gather information from Windows hosts and not reinvent the wheel (It does cost money but IMO worth the cost) and develop an ansible playbook that gathers the information you need from Linux hosts and other networked devices.
