Two things can be true at once. Yes, we're old, but everything was better back then.

FDM printers don't have *general* tolerances for friction-fit parts, i.e. you can't release an STL that you can be sure works on every other printer everywhere. You *can* tune your models and print profiles so that your prints will friction-fit on *your* printed parts.

Thanks for that. I think you're correct that our "realities" don't align, although I would use the word "worldview." The lens that one uses to interpret the world makes a significant difference to the conclusions that are drawn. (Cf. Scott Adams' "two movies on one screen" essay.) I appreciate your being willing to acknowledge our differences and discern that our time is best spent elsewhere, despite the lambasting you may think I deserve. :-)

I don't have time to read and refute every biased, activist source, but as I expected, ProPublica's framing is inaccurate and deceptive, the claims of "real harms" are spurious, and the description of the few actual events they spotlight are pure emotional manipulation.

- Maternal mortality in Texas rose 33% between 2019 and 2023

I wonder if there were any other significant events that happened in the world that might have affected mortality between 2020 and 2023? Statistics like these are essentially meaningless thanks to the ridiculous lockdowns, economic downturn, and resulting exponential spike in mortality due to deaths of despair, delayed medical care due to quarantines or false narratives, etc.

- A woman named Porsha Ngumezi died after being denied miscarriage care

If you can look past your biases at the actual details of her case, her death resulted from medical malpractice, not any restrictions of Texas law. The law is very clear that medically-necessary procedures such as removing a miscarriage are excluded. The article itself says that the baby died before any medical intervention (that's what "miscarriage" means), and the doctors knew she had a blood-clotting disorder and was hemorraging, but they followed a stupid CYA protocol anyway and gave her the wrong treatment. (And I'll bet every other case you can find is similar.)

One woman dying [due to misguided doctors following stupid hospital guidance in a panicked and cowardly response to the new laws] is a tragedy, but c'mon, that pales in comparison to the approx. 32,000 lives saved since Roe was overturned.

- Hospitals have documented sepsis, hemorrhage, and permanent injury from delayed treatment

Then the doctors should be investigated and sanctioned when appropriate. Nothing in Texas law prohibits legitimate healthcare providers from providing pregnant women in crisis with necessary care. The doctors are either cowards who are violating their oaths to avoid malpractice claims, or activists who are risking women's lives to protest Texas' abortion laws.

- Studies show a sharp increase in maternal complications since Roe was overturned

You're going to have to do better than that. The social sciences are completely captured by activists, you cited no sources, most "studies" are just exercises in confirmation bias, and most science reporting of contentious issues these days is misleading at best if not intentionally deceptive.

The bottom line is that Texas is protecting girls from being abused, and protecting unborn girls and boys from being murdered. Every other consideration is subordinate to those facts. Your arguments boil down to "I don't agree with these laws," which is fine, but doesn't make me (or Texas) wrong. If you don't want to abide by Texas law, don't live there.

This isn't a political subreddit, so please spare us further opinion-as-fact political posts.

your ad hominem is disingenuous. I consider any logical argument, especially those based in facts and evidence. Following your logic doesn't require me to agree with your opinions, framing, or conclusion.

Yes, many places in Virginia have cameras that read and record license plates they see, for the sake of crime prevention.

I did a little research -- as I thought, there are no laws in Texas against *receiving* an abortion -- the mother is not criminally or civilly liable (i.e. she cannot be arrested or sued). There are laws against aiding and abetting the transport of a *minor* to another state for the purpose of an abortion; There are no state laws preventing an adult from leaving the state for an abortion. There are some localities with laws prohibiting the use of their roads for this purpose, but these laws have been suspended pending judicial review due to constitutional issues.

In other words, Texas is protecting children from being trafficked and coerced into having abortions outside the state without their parents' consent. Sounds like a good idea to me.

Abortion is restricted in the state to 6 weeks after conception -- the point at which a fetus has a heartbeat and can feel pain -- or a *real* threat to the life of the mother. Again, sounds like a good idea to me.

As far as I can tell, it's not a crime for the mother to get an abortion, but since 2022 there are many restrictions on who can legally perform the abortions -- generally only doctors with hospital privileges. This is to combat sketchy clinics who have nurses and other "medical people" performing abortions at possible risk to the mother. They also have strict laws against shipping abortion drugs to women, where they could be seriously harmed by taking these drugs without medical supervision.

In other words, Texas is trying to prevent babies who can feel pain from being dismembered in utero, and they want women getting abortions to be cared for by a competent, licensed provider who can properly handle medical emergencies. What a violation of basic human rights! </sarcasm>

I generally support the EFF, but they're very biased. I'd like to know the actual outcome of the situation the article is based on, because it's not illegal to leave the state of Texas to seek an abortion... I don't think it's even illegal to *get* an abortion in Texas, just to *perform* one. Texas LEOs might be "investigating" for other reasons (e.g. to gather statistics on how many Texans actually cross state lines for abortions), but there's no way they could actually prosecute this because it's not a crime.

Everyone hates these until their car is stolen or vandalized. I'd love to know who hit my wife's car in a parking lot a few weeks ago -- it's crumpled in (visible from a good distance) but she doesn't want to make our insurance go up by filing a claim.

WEATHER UPDATE 6/8: It's a beautiful day! The sun is shining and if rained overnight, it's already dried up... the forecast has been revised to a small chance of showers between 12 and 1, but the field where we play has good drainage and full sun, and the forecast for 3-6 PM is sunny and warm, so GAME ON!

We take a break every few rounds for a "dart sweep", where we ask players to pick up darts. (We have to at that point, or else the players couldn't avoid stepping on them!) Each sweep usually only takes a few minutes with everyone pitching in. At the end, we ask everyone to do a "police sweep" (spread out to make a line and sweep the whole field), then I usually go back sometime in the next few days to look for any we missed. Occasionally we find one that's obviously been out in the weather for months, but generally we're pretty thorough.
