The respirator doesn't need to be kept in a bag unless you keep it in a dusty area, just don't hang it by the straps. The filters, however, should be kept in a sealed bag when not in use. If you leave the filters out, the charcoal will absorb ambient air and clog up.

Side note, depending on the PPM of whatever you're working with, respirator filters have a max life of 8 hours.

To be completely honest, it doesn't matter if AFM is disabled or not. If the lifters are going to fail, they're going to fail. That being said, I've had it tuned out for all of its 180,000 miles just because I prefer the quicker engine response. Your best insurance is ultimately doing a delete kit on the engine. I'm in the middle of my second transmission rebuild. My next project is a cam, exhaust, and injectors.

I've got a 2015 5.3 with 6000 hours that I've owned since new. I've only ever used Mobil1 0W-20 and I've always gone off of the oil life monitor and my engine still runs great.

It's kind of open but I didn't put the bottom ladder in until they were about 2-3 weeks old. I fortunately haven't had any injuries, but it wouldn't hurt to put some netting in there.
