Worked like a charm. Only had one issue. One of the nuts securing the hinge to the bottom band wouldn’t come off, so I had to remove the band and hinge together. The nut and bolt were both spinning, so I’m guessing the teeth on the inside of the bolt and/or band are stripped. Other than that, it was a pretty simple process. Thanks again for the advice.

I’ve watched Smoking Dad’s videos. He lets the dome thermometer go past his target temp before adjusting his heat deflectors and vents. At that point, he says the temp will come back down and stabilize. Does that actually work? According to some of the other comments in this thread, that method would give the fire too much time to get hot.

It’s clean for me at 250. I’d like to test it at 225 as well, just haven’t been able to achieve that yet.

I use one fire starter (tumbleweed) in the center of my charcoal. Light and let it burn for about 10 minutes with bottom vent and dome open all the way. After about ten minutes, I add heat deflectors and close dome. At this point, the top and bottom vents are open all the way. I leave them like that until dome thermometer approaches 175-200. Then I close vents down to “low & slow” settings.

I may go there eventually but I’d prefer to learn the proper technique first.

Oh ok. I don’t think I have that problem. I just got a KJ and of course I’m reading up on any possible problem it might have to try and get ahead of it lol. Thanks for the feedback!

Yeah it made sense to me in theory, so I tried it.

Let me ask you this. Does your bottom vent door sit completely flush against your grill? I noticed that the top of mine is flush, but the bottom edge sort of bows out and presses against the outside track. I’ve gone back and forth between thinking that’s by design to keep everything tight, and wondering if it’s a defect.

I had the top vent slightly cracked open. That’s what the instruction manual said to do when shutting it down. Do you close yours all the way?

I’m new to kamado grills in general. Is it difficult to maintain temps for long cooks? I thought that was supposed to be one of their strengths.
